Blog Tour: "Scavenge the Stars" by Tara Sim + GIVEAWAY

Hello everyone...I'm back today with the first blog tour of 2020! Blog tours are one of my absolute favorite things to do on my blog and I'm very excited to be sharing this awesome book with you today. Here's what you should look forward to in this post: synopsis and information on the book, purchase links, my personal review, a preorder campaign where you can get exclusive Scavenge the Stars goodies, information about the author, and an exclusive giveaway! How about we just jump straight in...

When Amaya rescues a mysterious stranger from drowning, she fears her rash actions have earned her a longer sentence on the debtor ship where she's been held captive for years. Instead, the man she saved offers her unimaginable riches and a new identity, setting Amaya on a perilous course through the coastal city-state of Moray, where old-world opulence and desperate gamblers collide. Amaya wants one thing: revenge against the man who ruined her family and stole the life she once had. But the more entangled she becomes in this game of deception-and as her path intertwines with the son of the man she's plotting to bring down-the more she uncovers about the truth of her past. And the more she realizes she must trust no one…

Packed with high-stakes adventure, romance, and dueling identities, this gender-swapped retelling of The Count of Monte Cristo is the first novel in an epic YA fantasy duology, perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas, Sabaa Tahir, and Leigh Bardugo.

4 // 5 stars

I was very excited when I found out that I was going to get a chance to read this book early. It had been on my radar for a few months and sounded right up my alley. I really did enjoy it and I'm super interested in seeing where the story goes in the sequel.

Okay so this is a gender-bent Count of Monte Cristo retelling, which would mean more to me if I even knew what Monte Cristo was about. However, you don't need to know that story to enjoy this one (obviously, seeing as I wasn't confused throughout). We follow two main perspectives that alternate every chapter and begin to intertwine the further along in the novel you read. I really enjoyed reading about both of the two characters who narrated these perspectives.

I'm trying to keep this review a bit shorter since this is a long post, but I do want to briefly mention the things I enjoyed: the ruthless nature of this world, the characters (main and side), the high-stakes and backstabbery, the representation, and so much more. I do think that the one thing this story could have benefited from was a richer world-building. The world is so unique and interesting, but we weren't given much information on it which was a bit confusing at times when characters would refer to cultures or empires. On the other hand, we also didn't get info-dumped on, which was good.

Overall, I did enjoy my time reading this book and I am excited to find out what happens next!
