For starters, you don't have to have read the other two books in the trilogy to read and understand this one, but this one will somewhat spoil the endings of the other two books. It's also good to read the others first because this one follows a character who is present in those two books so we do get a good amount of information about her that way.

Prepare for the sapphic pirate magic adventure of your dreams! We got LGBTQ content, we got pirates, we got dragons, we got god rivalries, we got it all! I am going to try to keep this spoiler-free for this book, but I cannot promise that it won't spoil the other books in this companion trilogy.

I did enjoy this installment but I can't decide if I liked it more than the others or if I liked the others more. I feel like there was a lot of action in this one, but there were times where it just felt long. For example, about halfway through we reached a big climax point that I was figuring would have been the end of the novel because nothing else had been hinted at, but it wasn't. To be fair, it did then set up the rest of the book but it really felt as if the first half and second half of this book weren't the same storyline (I think it felt like a book 1 and then book 2 instead).

However, apart from a few slow moments, I did enjoy this a lot. The characters were what definitely kept me going throughout, but the politics and the action were also quite well. I liked getting to see things that were set up in the other books continue to appear in this one.

Eris and Safire have my heart. I was rooting for them from page 1 and it's truly interesting tracking their character and relationship developments. A criminal and a commandant? A thief and a princess?  A pirate and a solider? Ahhh give me all of it! Their character developments were so good.

I honestly don't even know what else to say without rambling on and potentially spoiling things. The twists and reveals were great and I loved getting to see more of the world and creatures. I sped through this book and read it in just two sittings. I am very intrigued by what the author is going to do next!

Overall, I really enjoyed this final book and this entire trilogy. Each book was so different to each other yet all tied in together and I loved getting to see that. It really speaks to the author's great writing that she can write a dragon hunter trying to overthrow the government AND a political intrigue with court politics and betrayals AND a pirate and princess who hate each other are forced together on an adventure. It was all just so great.

Thanks for reading!

Book 1 Review

*I was sent a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own*

I was so excited to dive into this book since I'd enjoyed The Last Namsara so much. Because this was a companion novel, I was excited at the prospect of stories from different characters points of view. Not only that, but the synopsis for this particular installment got me super hyped for it.

I will say this book definitely had a different feel than the first one and that wasn't a bad thing. The first book was very action-packed with lots of high-intensity, high-tension scenes. This sequel companion was more laid back in terms of action scenes, but there was always a feeling of tension and unease throughout which I really liked.

From when I started this book until I finished it, I could barely put it down. The political scheming and internal battle our main character goes through kept me enthralled. Those two main things were what kept this story moving.

I really enjoyed the characters. Our main character, Roa, while flawed and definitely not perfect, was actually really enjoyable for me. I also really liked the side characters, though, like the first book, I wish we'd gotten to see even more of them. Dax was wonderful as always and I also liked getting to see some of the characters from the first novel make a reappearance.

Overall, I really enjoyed this installment. I think there could have been a few more high-intensity scenes, especially at the end, but I liked the story anyway. It was a quick read that sucked me in from page one and I can't wait to continue on with the next novel in this companion series.

Thanks for reading!

From the moment I heard about this book I knew I wanted to read it. My first encounter was all the way back in 2017 when it first came out and two things happened: I fell in love with the cover and the synopsis drew my attention immediately. For some reason, it took all these years for me to finally read it, so I want to thank HarperTeen for sending me a copy and finally pushing me into  reading it. I'm so glad I did.

This book was great. It had so many different elements that I loved individually and just all came together to form a wonderful story. From the characters to the magic and dragons to the political intrigue...it was great.

The magic and lore in this book is really interesting. The world the characters live in is not just their own--there are dragons with them. At the beginning of the novel, our main character is a dragon hunter--an Isakri. While out hunting, she tells old stories that have the power to draw dragons to her. The whole idea of a magic system revolving around old gods and dragons is just so unique to me.

Not only that, but the political intrigue and how society was structured in this book was very interesting. While you're reading, you're not really sure who you can trust and what's actually going on in this kingdom. We start off the novel thinking one thing and, by the end of it, have completely been bamboozled by the events.

The two main things that kept me engaged, though, were the characters and the stakes. What I liked about this book and the reason why I read it in one sitting was the fact that there were twists and turns that kept raising the stakes throughout the novel. It seemed like we'd just figure out how to deal with one thing when another curveball was thrown.

I really liked our main character, Asha, but I also loved all of the side characters. Our main character is in a really tough spot, mentally and physically. It doesn't ever really seem like anything can go well for her. Our side characters are also wonderfully written, which makes me excited since the next two books in the series are companion sequels following different side characters!

The one thing I will say was that I didn't feel like the romance was as strong as the rest of the components in the book, though that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I enjoyed the romance but I would have also been completely okay if it wasn't there, so I'm not sure how much it really impacted the plot besides how it influenced the different characters' actions.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I am definitely excited to read the next two. I think that the author has created a unique and compelling world full of high stakes and interesting characters that will keep me coming back for more time after time. I highly recommend!
