Unboxing: Fairyloot's "Farewell My Love" (September 2022)

Another month, another Fairyloot. From the moment they announced this box, I was excited for it. It shipped quite early this month, which was a real treat, and I was so excited when it arrived. They announced there would be a blanket in this box, as well as the last trinket dish in their collectible series. Additionally, this is the first month of there only being four items instead of five. To be honest, I didn't really notice. Between the bigger, high quality items, tarot cards, extra prints and bookmarks, and the book, I think we still get a lot for our money. I really liked this box (it was one of their better ones I've gotten recently) so let's just dive in!

The first item was a set of botanic themed coasters designed by @stellabookishart. These are quite pretty and I do think they're a useful item. I like that they're fandom neutral as I can definitely use them around our home. However, I am not quite sure when I'll get use out of them as I have a lot of coasters but not enough space to need that many just yet.

Up next was the final trinket dish in the collectible series designed by @arz28. This one features Cardan from The Cruel Prince by Holly Black. These dishes are gorgeous but I'm not sure if I'll get much use out of them. I have other trinket dishes but I tend to prefer covered storage to prevent dust on things. Also, I've not read any of the books that are featured with the trinket dishes, though all are on my TBR. In that, maybe on day I'll be able to display these on bookshelves when my stuff is out of storage but for now these will stay boxed away with other book merch.

Then there was a tea tin inspired by this month's book, Belladonna by Adalyn Grace, that was designed by @chattynora. It is another beautiful tea tin that Fairyloot seems to really enjoy including in their boxes. I think this is the fourth tea tin I own from them now? They're pretty cute and I like that they have lids so I can keep dust out of things. I think I'll store various bookish merch items in them or I might even use them for stationary stuff.

The last full item was a blanket designed by @afterblossom_art inspired by Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim. This and the book of the month were the main reasons that I got this box. I've gotten Fairyloot blankets in the past and I was quite excited. I haven't yet unrolled this fully as we're in the process of moving, but I've seen pictures of it online and it's beautiful. Plus, it's super soft and fluffy. It'll definitely come in handy this winter when it's too expensive to turn on our heating.

The tarot cards this month were also themed after this month's book, Belladonna. We have Signa as The Hanged Man and Death as the Death card. These, like usual, are beautiful. I'm actually really enjoying collecting the tarot cards this time around. I say this every month but I really like that the tarot cards are themed after books they include in their boxes.

This month's book was Belladonna. It came with an exclusive cover, stencil sprayed edges, artwork printed on the hardcover designed by @taratjah, artwork on the endpages by @monolimeart, and was signed. I've read books by Adalyn Grace and really enjoyed them, so I was definitely looking forward to her newest book. I was quite excited that it was going to be in this box and this edition is stunning. I much prefer this darker, purple themed edition over the standard UK edition. Plus, the edges are stunning. The art print was designed by @kudriaken.

Overall, I loved this box. I think Fairyloot have really upped their game the last couple years and I've enjoyed all their boxes since I resubscribed last December. I will be skipping all subscriptions in October, as I will be in the process of moving, but I am eagerly looking forward to my next box in the future (hopefully November). I think my favorite items were the blanket and the book for sure.

Thanks for reading!
xoxo

Unpopular Opinions Book Tag

Hello everyone! Today I decided to do another Unpopular Opinions Book Tag. I haven't done this tag since March of 2017 and I'm sure some of these answers have changed. This tag was originally created by The Book Archer on YouTube. You can find my first time doing this tag here. And now, let's go ahead and get into this controversial and fun tag!

What is a popular book or series you didn't like?

Everyone seems to love The Cruel Prince by Holly Black but I had major problems with it. When I read it and finished it, I seriously was wondering if I'd read the same book as everyone else because I didn't think it lived up to the hype at all. I originally gave it 4 stars because I was swayed by the hype, but then kept dropping my rating the more I thought about it until it hit 1 stars. I think right now I'd call it a 2 star book but I have absolutely no interest in reading the next one. You can find my review here

What is a popular book or series that everyone else seems to hate but you love?

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. I think that the book community has chilled on the hate for this series and more people I see on bookstagram are admitting they still like the book, but in the general world there's just a lot of Twilight hate. I've said it before and I'll say it again, people who haven't read the book/watched the movies only hate the series because its primary fanbase is teenage girls. But this isn't the place to get into all of that. Still, Twilight was one of the formational series of my childhood and it will always hold a special place in my heart even though I can see the issues with it now that I'm older.

What is a love triangle in a book or series where the main character ended up with the person you did not want them to end up with?

I don't really have an answer for this specific question because I haven't really been reading books with love triangles lately and the ones I have been reading have ended with the main character with the person I wanted them with. However, I will discuss a love triangle that I didn't like that may contain spoilers for To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han: Peter Kavinsky, Lara Jean, and John Ambrose McClaren. I thought that the fact there was a love triangle between these three was a bit ridiculous, honestly. I thought John was nice but there was nothing that I read that drew him and Lara Jean together in way that could justify dropping Peter. I like John, but I think I saw their relationship as more of a friendship than a romantic relationship.

What is a popular book genre that you hardly reach for?

There's a whole list of these starting with horror. I'm a scaredy cat and don't like it. I also find that a lot of YA thrillers really disappoint me, so I tend to stay away from those and just thrillers in general. I haven't read very much historical fiction in my life, though I do have some titles that I'm interested in reading eventually. I also don't reach much for contemporary books.

What is a popular or beloved character that you do not like?

Prince Cardan from The Cruel Prince. I get that he's supposed to be cruel because it's literally in the title of the book, but what he did in the book went beyond cruel. Just with my personal experiences in my life, I felt as if the justification of abuse that led to a cycle of abuse was handled poorly. Just...if you want my rant thoughts you can find them here

Who is a popular author that you can’t seem to get into?

Holly Black and John Green for sure. After reading The Cruel Prince and hearing others talk about Holly's other books, I just don't have any desire to pick up another book by her. I'm sure she's a nice person, but her books aren't for me. And with John Green, I read Paper Towns and it ended up really disappointing me by the end. I also only got about halfway through TFIOS before I put it down and had no desire to finish it even though I was getting through it pretty quickly. I'm going to try again with Turtles All the Way Down for Green, but overall I just don't generally read the genre of books he puts out.

What is a popular book trope that you are tired of seeing?

The rude or agonized character being "fixed" or "healed" by a female character or through a relationship where they come out a drastically changed person. This is honestly the worst, in my opinion. Girls aren't rehab centers for damaged people, for starters. Also, instead of being fixed and changed, I think learning to live with the bad that's happened and developing good coping mechanisms is better than being magically healed because a 17-year old girl with no psychological experience said they loved you and it'll be okay.

What is a popular book or series that you have no interest in reading?

Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. I tried reading the first book and couldn't get past the first few pages, although that was a few years ago so I'm sure I could do it now. Mostly, I just have no interest in reading the books after starting to watch the show. It's a huge time commitment that I'm not interested in and I would rather watch the show than read the books. Even the show, at times, didn't hold my attention so I'm sure the book would bore me.

What is a movie or TV show adaption of a book or series that you like more than the book/s?

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. I just remember being let down by the book but thinking that the movie was done pretty well. I didn't even like the movie that much, but I still thought it was better than the book.

Thanks for reading!

Top 5 Wednesday: Most Disappointing Reads of 2018

Hey guys, we're back with another Top 5 Wednesday! This week's theme is Most Disappointing Reads of 2018, which could be a bit of controversial topic. I just want to put a disclaimer that I'm not bashing on anyone for liking these books, but they either weren't for me or didn't live up to the hype. I'm also not hating on the authors...anything I say is strictly about the book itself. That being said, there are books on this list I hate and books that I actually really like, but these are my disappointing reads of 2018.

At number 5, we have Legendary by Stephanie Garber. I did enjoy this book but I didn't think that it lived up to the first one. My enjoyment could have been tampered by the fact that the e-arc I was reading had really bad formatting and that prevented me from getting sucked in, but I felt like the plot moved slowly and there wasn't as much "wow" factor as the first one until the very end. I just want to reiterate one more time, though, that I did enjoy this book and I'm still very excited for the last one, I just thought that my expectations weren't met. You can find my review here

For number 4, we have A Wild and Unremarkable Thing by Jen Castleberry. I had high hopes going into this book. It sounded amazing and fun and fantastical, all things that are right up my alley. But then I read it and it was an honest-to-god struggle. I rarely say I hate books but I hated this book, which is really sad because the author is a super nice person and I really wanted to like it. I feel as if this could have been improved with a lot more editing and beta-readers, but it fell seriously flat for me. You can find my review here

Coming in at number 3, we have White Stag by Kara Barbieri which actually just released this month. I was lucky enough to read an early copy of it and I had some high hopes going into it. They weren't met. I will say, though, that looking back on the events of the book and the writing and the idea of the characters and plot, I should have enjoyed this book more. I liked the writing style, I liked the plot direction, I liked the characters for the most part. But I didn't connect. I didn't get sucked in. I felt as if this could have gone through another round of heavy editing and it could have been amazing. You can find my review here

At number 2, I picked Lies You Never Told Me by Jennifer Donaldson. This was a YA thriller that released in 2018 that I was super excited to get a review copy of. And I hated it. I didn't feel thrilled, I hated or was indifferent about most of the characters, and I just felt like it was a below-average book. You can find my full, rant-filled review here

Lastly, at number 1, we have The Cruel Prince by Holly Black. Everyone seemed to love this book. Everyone was raving about how amazing it was with political intrigue, faeries, and about how much they loved Cardan. I'll be honest, when I finished it I was thinking, "is this really the book everyone is raving about?" I gave it 4 stars initially because I was influenced by everyone else's hype. But then the more I thought about it, I kept dropped my rating until it finally settled at 1 star. Although, I'm thinking of raising it to 1.5-2 stars. This was just not the book for me. I felt like I was ready a shitty high school drama set in a faerieland. I do think, though, that people interpret books in different ways and due to my own personal experiences, I just could not get behind the justification/cycle of abuse that went on. I knew Cardan would be cruel, but from the way everyone was talking him up I expected him to have some redeeming qualities. But no, he's got the emotional range of a potato and he is the actual worst. Sorry for this rant, but if you want more of my thoughts, you can find my rant review here

Thanks for reading!

Unboxing: Fairyloot's "Beautiful Deceptions"

I got my first Fairyloot! I'm so excited! I've been following this company since they put out their first box two and a half years ago and I've wanted one ever since. This month, I finally got one! The theme was Beautiful Deceptions and contained so many amazing goodies and one of my most anticipated releases of the year! Let's go ahead and jump straight in.

So on top, we have the beautiful spoiler card print. On one side it has this month's artwork and on the other side it has a list of all the items in the box as well as shop names! At the end of the box, we also got a bookmark with the month's theme on it as well as our monthly Fairyscoop.

The first item on top was a set of 3 Grisha pins. I will admit I haven't read the Grisha trilogy, but I have read Six of Crows, so I have a vague understanding of what the different orders are. And along with these pins, further in the box we got this beautiful SoC themed beanie. I love Fairyloot beanies because they're the perfect thickness for my taste and they're always so cute.

Next, we got a set of playing cards themed after The Cruel Prince. The different face cards all have a different character on them with the normal numbered cards just regular black/red and white. The backs of the cards also have this pretty beetle on them. Unfortunately, as pretty as these cards are, I actually really hate The Cruel Prince so I will be giving these to one of my friends.

After that, we got this gorgeous keychain themed after The Winner's Curse. It's so beautiful and I know I'm too scared of ruining it by putting it on my keys so it will just sit pretty on my shelf next to the trilogy. We also got this pair of socks inspired by Red Queen. I haven't opened them yet but the crowns continue on each of the socks. Hopefully they'll help keep me warm during this undoubtedly chilling winter.

My favorite item in this box besides the book is the Aelin inspired candle that we got! As I'm sure you know, Throne of Glass is my favorite series and I am beyond thrilled to have another candle themed after it. I cannot wait to use it in photographs.

We also got two bonus bookmarks from the publishers. One is for Sawkill Girls and the other is for The Poppy War. I am super excited to read both of these books soon and I will definitely be using these bookmarks when I do.

The final item we got was a bag of tea themed after the book of this month, which was Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan. I've been eagerly anticipating this book's release and I'm so excited to have this exclusive, signed edition with sprayed edges in my hands! It's soooo gorgeous! The book also came with a postcard of the original cover and an art print inspired by two of the characters! I cannot wait to dive in!
Overall, I thought that Fairyloot nailed this box. I know for me personally, subscription boxes can be hit or miss since they sometimes include things I won't use or books I'm not interested in, but Fairyloot seems to nail it on the head. I cannot wait until I can get another one!

Thanks for reading!

August 2018 Wrap-Up!

Hello everyone and welcome to my August wrap-up! Today I'm going to discuss all of the books I read and more! I read an astounding 13 books this month! I haven't read that many books in a month in a very long time, so I am very excited about this. For the first 9 days of the month, I finished a book a day. It was pretty great. I slowed down a bit towards the end of the year as I got super busy but overall it was a fantastic reading month! Let's go ahead and get started.

BOOKS READ
1.
Title: The Assassin's Blade
Author: Sarah J. Maas
Rating: 5/5 stars
I loved rereading these, even if it definitely broke my heart. Just knowing what I know from reading all the other books in the series, I loved seeing how Sarah hinted and foreshadowed at everything in this novel. It was amazing having these revelations too. It had also been about three years since I first read this novel, so I really just enjoyed revisiting these stories and characters and seeing all the detail that I've been forgetting since my first read.

2.
Title: Seafire
Author: Natalie C. Parker
Rating: 4.5/5 stars
Review

3.
Title: Obsidian
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Rating: 5/5 stars
I can't believe that I've never written a review for this book before. I absolutely love this book and rereading it was such a treat. I'm not going to lie, I definitely binge-read it all in one night when I should have been sleeping. But Jennifer's writing does that to you: it makes you want to stay up late and never stop reading until you finish the book...and then the next one and the next one. I definitely came into this book knowing that I would love this book but it was so refreshing to revisit this story and find all these details that I had forgotten since my first read three years ago. I highly recommend this book!

4.
Title: Onyx
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Rating: 5/5 stars
As with the first book in this series, I absolutely adored rereading this book! Having already read this book, I obviously knew how it ended but I was still racing to finish this book. There wasn't one moment where I wasn't actively engaged and trying to read as fast as I could to get to the next part and the next one and the one after that. It was quite a fun ride and also made me realize why I love this series so much. It's the epitome of a good read for me in that it keeps me engaged with the plot, I fall in love with the characters, I'm having just good ole fun reading it, and I never wanted to put it down. Reading this book again filled me with a giddy sense that I only get when reading certain books...and the constant search for that giddiness it was keeps me reading book after book after book. All in all, this reread was phenomenal and I can't wait to continue on!

5.
Title: Captivating Melody
Author: Katherine McIntyre
Rating: 4/5 stars
Review

6.
Title: Four Psychos
Author: Kristy Cunning
Rating: 4/5 stars
I was happily surprised a few days ago when I saw that the third book in this series had released without my knowledge. I first read this series a little over 7 months ago and fell in love. I love love love the characters and the angst. I think that I really just love reading from the anti-heroine and seeing her crazy mind. It's been such a blast.

7.
Title: Three Trials
Author: Kristy Cunning
Rating: 4/5 stars
Since I randomly reread book one, I decided to also read book two since I was already in the mindset of this series and I loved my reread of this one. It's been a while since I first read this book and it was awesome rereading my favorite scenes and discovering things that I had forgotten. It was steamy and action-packed and full of plot development that made my head spin. I can't wait to continue on to the newest release!

8.
Title: Two Kingdoms
Author: Kristy Cunning
Rating: 3.75/5 stars
I enjoyed this book, but I don’t think it was as good as the ones before it. This one seemed to have a lot of the same things being said over and over. I also spent most of this book confused as to what what being explained. However, I did really enjoy it. I loved the main characters, the humor, and their interactions with each other. I only hope there’s a happy ending coming their way. Overall, I enjoyed this book but it definitely was not my favorite of the series. The first two books were amazing and this one...wasn’t? It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t as great as the first two.

10.
Title: Throne of Glass
Author: Sarah J. Maas
Rating: 5/5 stars

Rereading this book was such a treat for me. I absolutely love this series and this was the book that got me back into reading, so the entire time I was immersed in this story I was just feeling so nostalgic. I truly love this story and I'm so happy that I decided to reread the entire series before the final book comes out. Honestly, I think rereading this was so amazing. It's been about three years since I read it through fully and, while I still knew what happened, it was awesome to be able to see what details I had forgotten. Also, all of the foreshadowing that comes to light in Empire of Storms, aka four books later, was so amazing to see. It really just shows how much time and thought Sarah has put into these books. I can't wait to reread the next one!

BLOG POSTS

TV SHOWS/MOVIES
I also watched two new movies and finished a TV season this month on top of all the books I read and things I did. The first movie I saw was Mamma Mia! I hadn't seen this yet but I finally got together with my friends and we watched it. I loved it and I watched it at least 7 times this month. Of course, that wasn't simply because I enjoyed it, but because my niece is now obsessed with it and asks about either watching it or listening to the soundtrack at least three times a day.

I finished season 8 of Bones this month and I loved it. I just really love this show and I'm so excited to continue on to finishing season 9, because as the time I write this, I've watched some of it and it's been super fun.

Lastly, I watched To All the Boys I've Loved Before on Netflix and it was so. freaking. phenomenal. I loved the book when I read it and I immediately watched the movie the next day. It was so cute and while it differed from the book occasionally, it was such a good adaption!

Thanks for reading!

Let's Talk: "The Cruel Prince" by Holly Black

Title: The Cruel Prince
Author: Holly Black
Series: "The Folk of the Air" #1
Genre: YA Fantasy
Page Length: 370 pages
Publication Date: January 2, 2018
Date Started: August 6, 2018
Date Finished: August 9, 2018
Rating: 3/5 stars

*This review is non-spoiler until noted otherwise*

So...I wrote an entire review and then in the same day decided those thoughts I had were completely wrong and I only had because I wanted to fit in with the hype. Unpopular opinion: this book wasn't fantastic. So, without further ado, here's my revised review.

Honestly, I thought I would love this book. I really did. It seemed like it had everything I love in a book: political intrigue, a badass main character, a forbidden romance, faeries, and so much more. I was let down. I really was.

Now, that’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy reading this book. I did enjoy reading it, but the more I look back on it, the more I’m disappointed by what I read. Everyone seemed to love this book and I can see how that might be the case, but for me, it missed the mark.

Most of what I have to say in this spoiler-free section is about the main character, the writing style, and the plot/pacing. I’ll go more in depth for specific characters and events in my spoiler-section. For now, let’s just talk about Jude.

I’ll say my relationship with Jude right now is on the rocks. Half the time I was reading from her, I was more annoyed or confused by her actions or inner monologues while the other half of the time I was screaming “Go Jude, get it girl!” in my head. I really wanted to love her, but I’m not entirely sure that I do. She was hypocritical or selfish a lot of the time, while other times she was very self-sacrificing to ensure that those around her weren’t hurt or in danger. It gave me whiplash, honestly.

Cardan…oh Cardan. When everyone talked about how awesome Cardan was, I expected him to be awesome. He wasn’t. He just…wasn’t awesome? He wasn’t a bad character, I guess, but he wasn’t as fantastic as all of this hype made him out to be. I’ll speak a lot more about him in my spoiler-section below, because I do have a lot to say.

For me, the writing wasn’t the best? It wasn’t terrible by any means, but I felt that I could have been done a lot better. Personally, it took me a while to get used to the first person writing. For complex fantasies, I’ve gotten used to reading third person. For me, the use of first person felt awkward and it took me a solid fifty or so pages to get used to the writing style. The use of first person also limited our view because we had to see exclusively through Jude’s rose-tinted glasses and take everything she said or thought as the absolute truth in that moment. I feel like I would have liked Jude more as a character had we not been inside her head the entire freaking book.

It read like a middle grade. The use of first person on top of the fact that most of this book didn’t follow the rule of “show, don’t tell” made me feel like I was reading something for middle-grade readers. There’s nothing wrong with middle-grade, of course, but when I want to read a complex story with political intrigue, I want the writing to reflect that? We were shown barely any political mess. Most of the action scenes or anything interesting weren’t detailed and it seemed as if we were getting a second-hand account of what was happening. I probably would have loved this book a lot more had I gotten more details.

I also didn’t connect with any of the characters, except maybe Jude a little. Just the writing style and lack of details made it almost impossible to connect to what a lot of the characters were feeling. I think that it being told first person from Jude’s point of view left us with only her views on the other characters, which I didn’t enjoy very much. The characters also felt very immature to me most of the time, and not just the younger ones but the adults too.

The plot was enjoyable but not amazing by any means. It definitely wasn’t what I expected. I didn’t realize that a good portion of the book would be schoolyard fighting and going to lectures. I thought that the plot background that we were given at the beginning was way too long and left the ending feeling rushed. Everything was slow, or moving at a comfortable pace, and then so much happened in a short amount of time that I was left reeling and confused, and not in the good way.

Overall, I just want to say that this book really disappointed me. I think that I let the hype get to me, which I usually don’t do, and I was left underwhelmed and confused as to why everyone thought this book was so new and fresh and amazing. To me, it seemed like every other good-but-not-great fantasy book that I’ve ever read. I enjoyed reading it, still. I thought that there were a lot of amusing parts and other scenes that kept my heart rate up. I do have the second book preordered because I think that this series has potential, I just wish that the things I discussed above had been more thought out. To me, this seemed like a second or third draft that still needed a lot of filling in.

**SPOILER TALK: Cardan**

I am going to be discussing Cardan for just a moment and there will be spoilers, so if you don’t want to be spoiled, I highly suggest coming back to this part of the review after you’ve finished the book! I just really need to rant/discuss Cardan for a second.

Okay, I just don’t understand why everyone loves Cardan so much. I’m a sucker for the bad-boy who can be a bit mean but turns into a nice guy trope. I lot of my favorite books are like that. But Cardan? I don’t see it. He’s mean, but he’s not just mean. He’s a bully, he’s abusive, and he’s (pardon my language) a huge dick. We got a little bit of an explanation to why he is the way he is: his brother beats him. I can sympathize with his struggles there, but his trauma is not an excuse for him to go and hurt other people (i.e. Jude). He literally lets his friends drug and embarrass her, almost kill her in a river, and so much more. Even though he explained that he never wanted her dead and would never let it go that far, he was still hurting her. And it’s not just a little teasing or mean comments here and there like a lot of other books with this trope have. No, he was actually bullying and being abusive to her. I don’t like him. I feel like maybe I would have liked him had the excuse for his actions not been that he was abused. It just gets my blood boiling that some people think that being abused is a suitable excuse for abusing others. It’s not. Because once Cardan’s brother was mean to Cardan, then Cardan was mean to Jude, she was mean to others, and it became a cycle.

Overall, my rant on Cardan is done. I don’t like him very much. He’s much more of a likable villain in my eyes than a possible love interest. His actions have completely turned me off of liking him and I don’t understand how some people don’t see that everything about him sends a toxic message. He has a long way to go before he is redeemed in my eyes, and I don’t even know if that will ever happen. Rant over.

Thanks so much for reading!
