Unboxing: Fairyloot's "Cloak & Dagger" (May 2022)

We have another Fairyloot unboxing! It's been a bit since I got a box as I skipped April but I am so incredibly excited about this one. I figured out the book when it was revealed and was excited to finally get my copy. Plus, in my opinion, the customizations were gorgeous this month! Without further ado, let's dive in! (I also apologize for the poorer quality on the pictures this time...the weather and my camera did not want to cooperate).

Up first, we have a bottle opener inspired by Red Rising by Pierce Brown designed by @ironandinkdesigns. I quite like this bottle opener as it's a cool shape and seems pretty sturdy. However, I live with a bartender so we have plenty of bottle openers and I'm not sure how much use this will get. I do think it's a useful item, though. I'm also interested in reading this series when the sixth book comes out.

Then we got a mug inspired by Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan designed by @kudriaken. The artwork is pretty nice on this mug and I always like practical items. Mugs, for me, are great because I can use them on my bookshelves for artwork and bookmark storage. I don't tend to use bookish mugs for actual drinks, though, as I have other mugs for those. I'm pretty happy with this item and I can only hope I'll enjoy this book so that I can keep my current growing merch collection for it.

The third item was a stardust tea strainer inspired by the book of the month, The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah, and designed by @blanca.design. I'm really on the fence about this item. For starters, I don't drink tea and the only other person in my house who does drink it doesn't use loose leaves. I also think that the wooden part that holds the strainer will get wet from tea and might hold smells. I do love the design, though, so I might keep the wooden holder on my shelf for decoration and just use the little strainer basket for something else.

Then we got two scrunchies inspired by From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L Armentrout and designed by @catarinabookdesigns. I actually use silk scrunchies primarily so these will probably get used. I like the designs as well, as it's just generic art and a quote. I don't particularly like scrunchies that have character art on them so these ones work well for my tastes. I also have read this book series so I'm always happy to have additional merch for it.
The last item was the next two foiled mythology bookmarks designed by @gracezhuart. This is a collectible series with new items every few months. This month was numbers three and four which show Loki and Kumiho. I like the artwork, though I wish the artwork was more consistent from the first two bookmarks as I think I liked those a bit more. I'm quite excited to see where this collectible series continues from here, though.
The two tarot cards this month are inspired by These Hollow Vows by Lexi Ryan and designed by @arz28. The first card is The Hierophant featuring Sebastian and Finnian. The second card is The Empress featuring Brie. I adore the artwork on these. I'm really liking the artwork lately for their tarot cards as when they initially brought out the first set I wasn't as much of a fan. Now that I like the artwork more, I'm quite excited to collect these. I'm also going to try and collect all of them this time around. I've also read this book and really enjoyed it so it's always fun to have a bit of merch.

The book of the month is The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah. This Fairyloot edition has an exclusive cover, purple sprayed edges, foil embossing on the hardcover designed by @artbyemmilinne, artwork on the endpages designed by @jhocaaa, and is signed. It came with an author letter with an art print on the back designed by @artbyemmilinne. I love the customizations on this. While there aren't stenciled edges like some people expect, I like the purple edges just how they are.

Now, my copy did come with a bit of glue stuck to the endpages, dust cover, and first few pages. When I opened the book, these little bits ripped slightly. With the dust jacket on it's not noticeable but I have submitted a query on if the damage is enough for an exchange/replacement. Mainly because the dust jacket is now super thin in a few places and might rip through eventually and have a hole. However, I did contact Fairyloot and have already received a replacement copy which is amazing. I'll be sending the slightly damaged one to a friend and I'm quite happy to have a copy free from imperfections.

Overall, I liked this box but it definitely was my least favorite of 2022. The tea strainer, while beautiful, is not something I see myself or anyone around me using. And while I may use the scrunchies, it's more likely they'll sit in a merch box until I can display my merch collection. However, I am really excited to read this book and love that the color changes were to purple as it's my favorite color. I am intrigued to see what June will be like with two books and am pretty excited about those.

Thanks for reading!
xoxo

Unboxing: Fairyloot's "Monsters Within" (January 2022)

I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed January's box. I was very excited for the book but the items didn't appeal to me at first. When they arrived, however, I realized I liked them a lot more than I thought I would. I think this came from the fact I was more interested in the book than the fandoms, but I am quite glad the items are useful enough for me to enjoy otherwise.

There were five items included in this box. The first was a trinket dish depicting James Herondale, a character from The Last Hours series by Cassandra Clare. This dish was designed by @arz28. I think this trinket dish is absolutely stunning and quite high quality. I don't currently have a use for it, though I do think in the future I will definitely use it. At the least, I will display it on my Shadowhunter shelves once I have all my books out of storage.

The next item was a tea towel featuring a quote from These Hollow Vows by Lexi Ryan that was designed by @stellabookishart. I actually just read this in February and really loved it so having some merch from it is quite exciting. This tea towel is really beautiful, though I don't think I will use it as a tea towel. However, I could see myself hanging it up as a tapestry type of decoration when I have my future library all set up.

Up next was an enamel pin inspired by Scythe by Neal Shusterman designed by @azura.arts. I haven't yet read this book but it is on my near-future TBR. This enamel pin is absolutely stunning as well and I think I would display it even if I didn't plan on reading the books just because of how beautiful it is. I do hope to get to Scythe soon, though.

The fourth item was a puzzle inspired by August Flynn from This Savage Song by V.E. Schwab, designed by @lizzart_zardonics. This is yet another book that is on my TBR so I'm not yet very connected to this character. However, I do really love puzzles and this will get used whether or not I read the book immediately.

The last item was a metal bookmark inspired by Aaron from Only a Monster by Vanessa Len, designed by @arz28. This is inspired by the book of the month and I'm really happy that Fairyloot have gone that direction. I quite like that if I love this book that I'll have merch for it already. Plus, the bookmark is quite high quality.

The collectible tarot cards for this month were the Page and Knight of Pentacles designed by @lizzart_zardonicz and feature two characters from Red Rising by Pierce Brown: Cassius and Sevro. This is yet another series I have on my TBR. I have mediocre feelings about the tarot card collections, if I'm being honest, as I don't have much use for them and with we'd get a different item. But the Red Rising ones are also beautiful so I think I'll use them just as mini art-prints for the series.

The book of the month is Only a Monster by Vanessa Len which is a book I was actually quite excited for. This edition features an exclusive cover, two-colour stencil sprayed edges, artwork on the endpages designed by @arz28, foil embossing on the hardcover designed by @arz28, and is signed by the author. There was also a character art print designed by @jessdraw.s on the back of the author letter.

Overall, I am very happy with this box. Though there are some fandom-inspired items from books I haven't yet read, they are from books that are on my TBR so I am still happy to receive them. Additionally, these items are a lot more useful to me and quite beautiful. For me, the main reason I get Fairyloot's boxes nowadays is because it's cheaper to buy the box than to buy the books secondhand afterwards. Because I used to spend more money on just the books themselves, getting the full box for cheaper than secondhand just feels like I'm getting a bunch of bonus items with my book (even though that's not really how it works). This box was a little late but I am okay with that as I felt it was all worth it. I am absolutely obsessed with this edition and I can't wait to read Only a Monster

Thanks for reading!

February 2022 Wrap-Up

Another month of 2022 has gone by and I think it's safe to say it was another month of up and downs. There were some low points but I think, overall, that February was a good month. A lot of good things happened and I read some great books. There was not a single book this month that I didn't love, which is so rare! I only read six books, but half of those were over 700 pages long. So I'm pretty happy with that, even though I was hoping to get through a few more as well. I have high hopes for March's reading month, though we'll see how that goes with university ramping up quite a bit. Anyway, let's dive in!

Book Review: "These Hollow Vows" by Lexi Ryan

Title: These Hollow Vows
Author: Lexi Ryan
Series: "These Hollow Vows" #1
Genre: YA Fantasy
Page Length: 464 pages
Publication Date: July 20, 2021
Rating: 4.5 // 5 stars

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and cannot wait to see where the sequel takes the story!

I'd seen These Hollow Vows floating around online for a while and decided to pick up a copy a few months ago. Originally, I was going to just wait until the sequel comes out (summer 2022). Then one of my good friends read it and was raving about it and then I felt I had to read it sooner rather than later.

This book, despite being almost 500 pages, was a really quick read for me. The writing style was really easy to follow, the pacing worked for me, and I was able to fall into the story and stay in it for the most part. There were a few parts where I was just stressed from real life but once I allowed myself to let all that fade away I was able to fully immerse myself in this world.

The world was intriguing and not too hard to understand. I also really enjoyed there was a map in this one (as I think is becoming mostly standard in fantasy?). A big part of the story is the emphasis on the importance of stories and tales. We got a lot of world building for the fae lands in the form of these tales which I think was rather interesting as it added an element of us having to question the validity behind them.

The actual plot itself was interesting, if a bit predictable. I love thief and heist stories, though I did think that thievery would play more of a role in this one. There were plenty of times I guessed the plot twist or big reveal but that isn't a negative at all as I do like the satisfaction I get of guessing right. That being said, there were a few that I didn't see coming.

My favorite part of this book was definitely our main character. Her motivations, her personality, etc. She's in a difficult situation and I think many criticisms of this book don't take into account she's a human in a fae world at a disadvantage. I enjoyed the side characters and I definitely am interested in how all of the relationships progress in the next book. There are a few that I really want to see get more page time as well.

I am torn on the romance. There is a love triangle, which is something I really haven't read in a long time. I will say, the romance aspect wasn't as strong to me, likely because it was split trying to make us love two different characters. What was interesting, though, is that who I wanted the main character to end up with from the beginning of the book was completely different by the end. I was so sure going into the book that wouldn't change and...it did.

That being said, I have very strong feelings about who I want our character to end up with if she has to end up with anyone. I knew from about halfway through the book which of the love interests I liked better and I truly hope it continues that way in the future. I think part of why I rated this less than five stars despite enjoying it immensely is because I didn't really like some of the romance bits with the love interest I don't like.

And it's not even that I don't like him for the main character. I just flat out don't like him at all. He's an interesting character, but in terms of likability, I spotted some things and got the ick pretty early on. Obviously there is an entire book left to go and things could change in that regard. However, for now, I much prefer the other love interest (and I'm sorry if that's too vague...I just don't want to spoil anything!).

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed myself while reading this book. It's nothing revolutionary or genre-breaking but it does exactly what it is supposed to do and is the YA fantasy it's supposed to be. The writing is strong, the story is interesting but not overly complicated, the magic system is (so far) intriguing, and the characters were well-developed enough for me to connect with them. I can only imagine what the next book will be like after that ending!

Thanks for reading!

November 2021 Book Haul

Well...I know I said that November was going to be a smaller book haul than October. I was incredibly wrong. I hauled more books this month than last so obviously that book buying ban did not work. However, I will be on a strict buying ban in December due to Christmas shopping, general living expenses, etc.

That being said, I hauled thirty books in November. Many of them were heavily discounted (less than $3), some were paid for months ago as preorders, and some were just books I really wanted. I got a lot of books that are companions to tv shows and movies as well and those make up a good number of what I hauled secondhand.

This haul will be a bit different than normal. There's way too many books to talk about for my usual posting method so I will be separating them into sections and then listing them there. So, without further ado, here are the many many books I hauled in November.

The first section I have is books that are new releases or ones that I preordered a while back. I'm really excited about all of these and look forward to diving into the ones I haven't yet read.
  1. These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong (Waterstones special edition paperback)
  2. Our Violent Ends by Chloe Gong (Waterstones signed special edition hardback)
  3. All of Us Villains by Amanda Foody and Christine Lynn Herman (UK hardback)
  4. Girls of Fate and Fury by Natasha Ngan (UK hardback)
  5. Still With Me by Jessica Cunsolo (US paperback)

Up next, I have just general books that I've been wanting and ended up picking up this month. I've read a few of these already but the majority are unread and on my immediate TBR for the next few months! Some highlights include some special/hard to find editions and the complete Red Queen series.
  1. Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard (Collector's Edition)
  2. Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard (Collector's Edition)
  3. King's Cage by Victoria Aveyard (Target Exclusive Edition)
  4. War Storm by Victoria Aveyard (US hardcover)
  5. From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout (US hardcover)
  6. These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong (Owlcrate exclusive signed hardcover)
  7. The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood (US paperback)
  8. These Hollow Vows by Lexi Ryan (Fairyloot exclusive signed hardcover)
  9. S. by JJ Abrams and Doug Dorst

The next section I have is a few books that were heavily discounted. These are all romcoms where I was able to get all three for the cost of a single book at retail price. I've been getting into romcoms a lot more in the past couple of years as well and have been specifically looking for holiday-themed ones this autumn (aka for Halloween & Christmas time).
  1. The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary (UK paperback)
  2. To Love and to Loathe by Martha Waters (UK paperback)
  3. The Holiday Swap by Maggie Knox  (UK paperback)

The final portion of books I want to talk about is movie and tv show companion books. I found a secondhand seller online who has tons of companion books for my favorite movies and shows. Most of these were for very cheap (less than $3-$4). Believe it or not, but I actually had way more in my cart before I scaled down to these (though eventually I want all of them).
  1. Bones: The Official Companion by Paul Ruditis
  2. Bones: The Forensic Files by Paul Ruditis
  3. The Hunger Games: The Official Illustrated Movie Companion by Kate Egan
  4. Twilight: The Complete Illustrated Movie Companion by Mark Cotta Vaz
  5. New Moon: The Complete Illustrated Movie Companion by Mark Cotta Vaz
  6. Eclipse: The Complete Illustrated Movie Companion by Mark Cotta Vaz
  7. Breaking Dawn Part 1: The Official Illustrated Movie Companion by Mark Cotta Vaz
  8. The Adventures of Merlin: The Complete Guide by Jacqueline Rayner
  9. The Dragon's Call by Simon A. Forward
  10. The Adventures of Merlin: Villains Guide Jacqueline Rayner
  11. The Adventures of Merlin: Heroes Guide Jacqueline Rayner
  12. The Adventures of Merlin: The Official Annual 2010 by Various Authors
  13. The Adventures of Merlin: The Book of Mystery and Magic by Various Authors

Well, that's my haul for November. It was rather large, though I've had larger hauls (I've also had smaller hauls where I spent more money than this). However, I'm really excited about every book that I hauled this past month and I especially can't wait to dive into the companion novels.

Did you get any exciting books in November? Let me know down below!

Thanks for reading!
