Disappointing Books of 2020

Well, we're at the end of 2020. It's been a long year yet somehow this ending snuck up on me. I'm just glad it's over. Anyway, I'm not here to talk about my general feelings about 2020 but, rather, to dive into the first of my yearly wrap-up posts. Every year I do a few fun posts to wrap up my reading year and this year was definitely an interesting one.

Today I'm going to be chatting about my disappointing reads of 2020, but I feel like I need to give a bit of an explanation and disclaimer first. Just because these books are on this list does not mean I didn't like or enjoy them. Also, I am not trying to throw shade at any of these authors or people who like these books because, again, I did enjoy some of these. However, the books on this list are here because I had high or different expectations for the book and ended up disappointed. Let's go ahead and dive in!

The first on this list is actually the only one that I didn't like at all. In fact, I'd go as far to say that I hated it. I've mentioned this book multiple times over the year since I read it at the beginning of isolation but I just...it wasn't good. The book I'm talking about is Crave by Tracy Wolff. I had such high expectations for this book. It seemed right up my alley and I had heard nothing but positive reviews. And then I read it. And hated it. I won't get super in depth here because I have a non-spoiler rant review here but I just was severely disappointed and didn't like this book at all.

The next book is Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer. I feel like this might be a bit of a cop-out add since I technically haven't finished it yet but I think that fact warrants addition to this list on its own. I have been a die-hard Twilight fan since I was nine. I started Midnight Sun the day it came out. And I still haven't finished it. I'm over halfway and have been struggling. I'll have more thoughts once I finally finish but, for now, it's been mostly disappointing so far despite some new content I've enjoyed.

The third book I have is Losers Reap Her by Hayley Stumbo. This is the long-awaited final book in one of my favorite adult trilogies and I was so excited to finally get to reading it. I will admit that I probably hyped it up way to much in my mind and added unnecessary expectations to it. However, I also feel like this book was way different from the first two. Part of the reason I loved the trilogy so much was because I loved our main narrator, and when the POVs changed in this final book I felt a tad disconnected. Also, the ending was one of my least-favorite tropes of all time so that also didn't help. I won't say that I didn't like this book, because I did. I enjoyed finding the resolution to a trilogy I've loved for so long. However, i was a bit disappointed in it not matching my expectations.

The last book on this list is Blood & Honey by Shelby Mahurin. This one hurts probably the most out of every book on this list. The first book, Serpent & Dove, was my number one favorite book of 2019. It still remains one of my top books of all time. I was incredibly excited for the sequel. However, I felt like it let me down. I did try to make my expectations realistic in that a lot of the things I loved about the first book couldn't be replicated. However, it felt like this book dragged a bit and I was quite frustrated by many of the characters throughout a lot of the book. I do think this is a case of second-book syndrome, especially considering this was originally a duology that got stretched to a trilogy. I am still quite excited for the third book, Gods & Monsters, and I did give this book 4 stars, but it didn't live up to the first book or the early hype I'd been reading and, for that, I was disappointed.

Thankfully, those were the only books I had for this list! There were books that I rated low this year but a lot of those were also ones that I wasn't highly anticipating so they didn't really disappoint me, per se. Hopefully next year I won't even need to do this post!

What books disappointed you this year? Let me know in the comments!

Thanks for reading!
xoxo

July 2020 Wrap-Up

Hello everyone! I can't believe another month has passed already. This year has simultaneously felt like the slowest and fastest year. July was an alright month for me. I was very stressed and there were some sad moments but I also read a good number of books and finalized some plans that were making me anxious. Overall, I hope August will be a better month!

I read a total of 13 books in July. Some of them were a bit longer whereas others were novellas. I largely credit this number to the Reading Rush Readathon, during which I read all of these books except the first four. I aim to read the same number or more in August, but we shall see if that happens! Without further ado, let's jump right in!

March 2020 Wrap-Up!

Well hello everyone! March is finally over. The only thing I can say is about damn time! Looking back, March seemed like it lasted a decade. At the beginning I had midterms, then I was in London before the pandemic really hit, and then I was moved out of college and back home in isolation doing online classes. Suffice to say, this month wasn't a great reading month. I did read 8 books, but half of them were rather short and my TBR was quite a bit longer for the month. However, I am not too upset because I was already stressed about life and I'm glad I didn't stress over books as well. Anyway, let's just dive in!

BOOKS READ
1.
Title: Lumberjanes, vol 1: Beware the Kitten Holy
Authors/Illustrators: Stevenson, Ellis, Watters, & Allen
Rating: 4 // 5 stars
Beware the Kitten Holy (Lumberjanes, Vol. 1)
This was super cute and adorable. It was a bit different than I expected, but in a good way. I'm definitely getting a lot of family of friends vibes and I like that it's set at a camp. Also, the introduction of supernatural events and whatnot has me really intrigued!

2.
Title: Lumberjanes, vol 2: Friendship to the Max
Authors/Illustrators: Stevenson, Ellis, Watters, & Allen
Rating: 4 // 5 stars
Friendship to the Max by Noelle Stevenson
I was a bit more confused at times with this one but it was still super cute and fun. I'll definitely be continuing on with the next one!

3.
Title: Lumberjanes, vol 3: A Terrible Plan
Authors/Illustrators: Stevenson, Ellis, Watters, & Allen
Rating: 4 // 5 stars
A Terrible Plan (Lumberjanes, Vol. 3)
This was so cute. It was less intense than the last ones but the entire thing was so cute and fun. I really liked getting to see a more laid back installment with the characters hanging out together and just being cute.

4.

This was a reread that I did in order to continue on with the trilogy for a blog tour and...I think I liked it even better this time around. It still wasn't perfect and there were moments that dragged, but I enjoyed it even more than the first time around.

February 2020 Wrap-Up + Haul

Hello everyone! Today I'm here with my February Wrap-Up and I'm actually very happy with how this month went in terms of reading! I only read 2 books in January, but after this month, I'm almost back on track with my Goodreads challenge. Plus, I got through a bunch of amazing books! I read a total of 12 books this month so let's go ahead and dive on in!

BOOKS READ
1.
Title: Our Nig
Author: Harriet E. Wilson
Rating: n/a -- read for class
Our Nig: or, Sketches from the Life of a Free Black
This was a very interesting read and quite emotional at times. It follows the story of Frado, a free black child in the North. However, while she's technically free, she is stuck in an indentured servitude which is pretty much the same thing as being a slave. While the story itself was interesting and easy to read, it also provided a look into what the North was like at that time since, at least in my schooling, we're taught that the North was a happy wonderland for black people in that time period, when it really wasn't the case.

2.
Title: Secrets From the Grave

Secrets From the Grave (The Veil Diaries Book 6)
Rereading this was fun, but I also realized that compared to the first few books in the series I didn't feel as connected to the characters. Still, it was fun to revisit and I'm glad I reread and found details I'd forgotten or missed from the first time around.

3.
Title: When the Dead Have it Easy
Author: B.L. Brunnemer

When The Dead Have It Easy by B.L. Brunnemer
This was another reread on my approach to reading the newest release in this series. I did enjoy it, though as with the first time, not much happened in this book outside of the relationship. I'm still glad to have read this book, but I will admit that there were times where I was bored which usually doesn't happen in this series.

4.
Title: When the Dead Come Home

6.
Title: All the Stars and Teeth
Author: Adalyn Grace

All the Stars and Teeth (All the Stars and Teeth, #1)

7.
Title: The Backstagers, Vol 1: Rebels Without Applause
Author: James Tynion IV
Illustrators: Rian Sygh & Walter Baiamonte
Rating: 3.5 // 5 stars
The Backstagers, Vol. 1 by James Tynion IV
All three of these graphic novels were really cute and fun. As someone who dabbled in theater (but didn't do a lot of it actively), it was fun to get to see theater getting combined with magic and whatnot. Plus, these characters were super cute and I really enjoyed the art style!

8.
Title: The Backstagers, Vol 2: The Show Must Go On
Author: James Tynion IV
Illustrators: Ryan Sygh & Walter Baiamonte
Rating: 3.5 // 5 stars
The Backstagers, Vol. 2 by James Tynion IV

9.
Title: The Backstagers, Vol 3: Encore
Author: James Tynion IV
Illustrators: Ryan Sygh & Walter Baiamonte
Rating: 3.5 // 5 stars
The Backstagers, Vol. 3 by James Tynion IV

10.
Title: The Sky Weaver
Author: Kristen Ciccarelli

The Sky Weaver by Kristen Ciccarelli

11.
Title: Writing Fiction
Author: Janet Burroway
Rating: na/a--read for class
Writing Fiction by Janet Burroway
It's the same as every other generic writing fiction book. That's not a bad thing, because it does its job and lays out the basics of writing, but there was nothing in this that I felt catapulted it into a must-have guide.

12.
Title: David Walker's Appeal to the Coloured Citizens of the World
Author: David Walker
Rating: n/a rating--read for class
David Walker's Appeal by David Walker
I had to read this for school and it was definitely interesting. It's not a fiction story, it's a very real appeal to people about the state of things during slavery. It wasn't nice or easy to read, but it opened my eyes a lot more to things that went on because of slavery that I'd actually never learned about before.

BOOK HAUL

Guys...my haul was so small this month that I could include it in my wrap-up again! Additionally, I didn't buy either of these! The first of these I was sent by a publisher for review (coming in March) and the second I won in a giveaway. This is actually a pretty big deal to me because it's the first month since June 2015 where I haven't bought a single physical book. It's been over four and a half years of me consistently buying books and, as I'm trying to cut back on buying them, I'm actually really proud that I managed not to buy any in February. Of course, with March being the month of Crescent City, I will be buying some soon but I'm still overall very happy with this because it showed me I can stick to a book-buying ban.

The Winter DukeThe first book that I got was an ARC of The Winter Duke by Claire Eliza Bartlett which was sent to me by Novl. This one actually releases at the beginning of March so there isn't too long of a wait for it! I will be taking this will me to London on spring break and I can't wait to read it!

Lobizona (Wolves of No World, #1)
The second book I got this month was an ARC of Lobizona by Romina Garber (also known as Romina Russell). I've read one of Romina's other books and enjoyed it quite a bit so I was excited when I won the Goodreads Giveaway for a copy of her newest upcoming release! I believe this releases in May but it is available for preorder.

January 2020 Wrap-Up + Haul

Well, my January TBR was an ambitious one and I do have to say that I absolutely failed miserably. I thought I was going to smash out of a bunch of books over winter break but that didn't happen, and now it's already February and I read all of two books in January. One was a bit disappointing and the other was a slave narrative for class that hit me really hard in the feels. Hopefully February will be a better month reading wise, but let's just dive into my wrap-up.

BOOKS READ
1.
Title: Scavenge the Stars
Author: Tara Sim
Rating: n/a--DNF
Scavenge the Stars (Scavenge the Stars, #1)

2.
Title: Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave
Author: Frederick Douglass
Rating: n/a -- read for class
Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave by Frederick Douglass
My professor said one day in class that Frederick Douglass was one of the best writers in American history and that his narrative is one of the best novels out there. I'd have to agree. I'm not going to say much on it since I had to read it for class, but it was a very heartbreaking, eye-opening, and inspiring story.

BOOKS HAULED

Because my wrap-up was so short this month and I didn't get that many books, I thought I'd just briefly list the four books I did get here!
  • Windwitch by Susan Dennard
    • The hardcovers recently underwent a cover change and I wanted to get the original covers before they got too rare and when I saw this at my local used store I couldn't resist
  • Writing Fiction by Janet Burroway
    • I had to get this for my Fiction Writing class this semester
  • Say You'll Remember Me by Katie McGarry
    • I adore all of Katie's books that I've read so far and this is one of the ones that I need to get reading soon so when I saw a signed copy for cheap I decided to snag it
  • Our Nig by Harriet E. Wilson
    • This is one that I had to get for my African American Literature class this semester
I didn't get that many, and I don't anticipate getting very many in February either. I've been super busy and haven't had the time to read, and if I'm not reading voraciously I also don't have as big of an urge to buy books.

Bookish Resolutions for 2020

The new year is upon us and I have a list of bookish-themed goals for the new year. I definitely like making goals periodically throughout the year, but today I'm going to be talking about a list of more general things that I hope to accomplish during 2020. A lot of these are things that I was working on in 2019, too, so I think that this list is entirely achievable. But, without further ado, here's my goals for 2020:
  • Reading
    • Read 100 books
      • I read 138 books in 2019, so I think this should be achievable and in-line with previous years. I was thinking of making it 150 books and pushing myself, but I want to focus more on quality instead of quantity and I don't want to make myself hate reading.
    • Finish 10 book series
      • I finished 9 series this past year and, as I have a lot of series on my TBR, I think that a goal of finishing 10 series is manageable.
    • Read more backlist TBR books
      • My TBR is insane. I'm admitting it here first. I have way too many books that are unread so this is one of the bigger priorities for me.
  • Bookstagram
    • Be more active
      • I was very active in 2019 before I fell off a bit but I do want to get back to that level again. This includes posting regularly, responding to comments and DM's, and engaging more with other community members.
    • Hit 3,500 followers
      • I currently have 2,355 followers and, if I look at previous growth rates for each year, this is definitely doable, I think, as long as I can keep with my previous resolution to be more active.
  • Blog
    • Average 3 posts a week
      • This is something I'm bringing over from both 2018 and 2019. A consistent schedule is the one thing I've found that boosts my page views and engagement, so I'm going to continue with the goal of averaging three posts a week.
    • 70,000 new blog views
      • This is one of my more ambitious goals as well as I had ~58,000 views in 2019. It's a bit ambitious to add a higher goal, but I think that if I do a bit more promoting of my blog with my other social media channels and post regularly, it can be done.
  • Book Collection
    • Buy less books
      • This is a big one for me. I love buying books but there's a line between a healthy amount and irresponsible. I've fluctuated in the past year with book buying and I've definitely been more responsible the past few months. I want to keep the number of books I acquire low so that I can focus on my backlist TBR and saving money.
    • Unhaul over 100 books
      • This should be easy for me. My collection currently stands at 760 which is a big number. I've already gone through and made a list of books I think I could get rid of and it's already over 100 books. However, now it's onto the task of actually getting them out of storage boxes and selling/donating them. That's the one part of this goal that will be difficult.
  • Writing
    • Continue working on my novel
      • I've been working on multiple novels throughout my life and I've never finished one.  There's one, though, that always finds its way back to me. I'd ideally like to finish the first draft this year, but if I don't manage to achieve that with everything else I'm trying to do then as long as I make progress in it I'll be happy.
    • Work on short story craft
      • This is a new one for me. I like long works or short blog posts. However, most of my creative writing classes focus on short stories or excerpts of longer ones. Just once I'd like to write a short story and be somewhat happy with how it turned out and not want to make it longer or get rid of it completely.

So those are my bookish-related goals for 2020. I think this is definitely doable, but I may have to adjust them once I actually get back to school this semester and try to fit things it around everything else.

Thanks for reading!

Anticipated 2020 Book Releases

Hey everyone! We are at the start of my favorite time of the year: the holidays and winter break! This is my favorite time of the year for a few reasons, the first being Christmas, the second being winter break and time off school, and the third being all the amazing bookish blog posts I get to write this time of year! I love wrapping up the year and looking forward to the next one, which is what I'm going to be doing in this post today.

This upcoming year (and decade in general), are promising to bring a lot of amazing book releases. I have many upcoming releases on my radar and preorder list, but I thought I'd narrow it down to my top 10 to share with you all! Some of these are coming very soon, others may be months away, but I'm excited for all of them nonetheless!

Image result for a fallen hero sara noeAt number 10, we have the second book in the Chronicles of Avilésor by Sara A. Noë, Phantom's Mask. The first book, A Fallen Hero, was one of my favorite reads of 2019 and I've been eagerly anticipating any news on the second book. We have no cover yet but there is a title and an excerpt already that have me so excited for its release.

Image result for an ember in the ashes seriesNumber 9 we have the fourth An Ember in the Ashes novel by Sabaa Tahir. While I admit that I haven't yet read the third book in this series, that's only because I am planning on doing a complete series binge when the final book releases. There's no confirmed release date yet but based on a lot of stuff from the author's writing updates, I hope it will be coming in 2020.

Image result for kerri maniscalcoFor number 8 I have Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco. This is another book with no cover yet but we do have a synopsis that is absolutely killing me! I absolutely adore Kerri's Stalking Jack the Ripper series and I am so excited to see what she's going to do next. This one is the first in a new series and is set to come out in the fall!

Image result for trying to live with the deadAt number 7 I actually have two books but they're within the same series: the 8th and 9th novels in The Veil Diaries series by B.L. Brunnemer. It's no secret that this series is one of my favorites and we're finally approaching the end (well, is it the end when there's a sequel series following the same characters but a different storyline?). I cannot wait to reread the entire series in anticipation of the newest book, which should be out in January while the last should be out later in the year.

Image result for witchlands seriesFor number 6 I have the fourth Witchlands novel by Susan Dennard. There's been some talk that it's not going to come out until 2021, which would be sad, but as of right now there's still a chance it will  be 2020 so I'm going to include it on this list. This is a series I discovered at the end of 2018 and binged in the first few months of this year. I absolutely fell in love with the characters, the world, and Susan's writing. I cannot wait for the next book!

Image result for empirium trilogyNumber 5 we have Lightbringer by  Claire Legrand, the final book in the Empirium trilogy. I am absolutely stoked for this book. After the cliffhanger in Kingsbane, I've been desperately needing to know what happens and we're only a few months away (okay, like 10 months away but still). I'm sad the trilogy is coming to a close but I'm also excited to finally have resolution with the characters and a (hopefully) happy ending.

The Empire of GoldAt number 4 I have The Empire of Gold by S.A. Chakraborty. This is the third and final book in the Daevabad trilogy and I'm so excited. I discovered this series at the beginning of the year and, after binging them rather quickly, I am dying to know what happens next. I'm already planning a reread of the first two books and I'm just so excited for when the time will finally arrive.

Image result for sarah j maasFor number 3 I have the fourth A Court of Thorns and Roses novel. While it's not confirmed to be out in 2020, the most recent announcement said it would be coming at the end of 2020, so I'm holding out hope for it. I'm so excited for this spin-off novel and I can't wait to see how Sarah writes these new character perspectives and new story.

Shelby MahurinAt number 2 is Blood & Honey by Shelby Mahurin, the sequel to Serpent & Dove aka my favorite book of 2019. I absolutely adored Serpent & Dove and I cannot wait to get more of the characters, magic system, and high stakes in the sequel. I also just know that there's going to be an absolutely gorgeous cover for it to match the first one.

House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City, #1)And, lastly, we have House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas. This is the first book in Sarah's new adult fantasy series and I am so excited for it. ARCs have started going out and I have serious jealousy at everyone who's gotten one. I already have four editions preordered and I know that more will probably follow. I have such faith in Sarah and I cannot wait to read a new story from her set in a contemporary fantasy world!

Thanks for reading!
