Spooky Season Book Recommendations

It's spooky season, aka the start of my favorite few months of the year. September through December are my favorite months, for many reasons. The cooler weather, the changing leaves into snow, the holidays...it's all amazing. While this year is a bit stressful, I'm still hoping to get into the spooky season vibes soon. This, of course, starts with some spooky book recs. I'm not a big scary book/movie person, but I do love books with witchy and autumn vibes. Here are some I've read and loved or ones I'm looking forward to this year!

Up first I have City of Gods and Monsters by Kayla Edwards. I read this during the summer, but the vibes are the perfect mix of fantasy and magic that's perfect for autumn. It's also my favorite read of this year so far. Read on for the synopsis...

Welcome to the city of Angelthene. We hope you survive.

Loren Calla has only ever been ordinary. As a human struggling to survive in a city that caters to the needs of vampires, werewolves, witches, and other supernatural creatures, she always assumed her life would remain simple, predictable, and as safe as her world would allow.

Until she barely escapes abduction at the hands of Darkslayers—supernatural bounty hunters that possess the Sight, a magical tracking ability that allows them to see a person’s aura—and one of her friends is taken in her place. The abductors are demanding a ransom: Loren's life in exchange for her friend's safe return. Loren will do whatever it takes to get her friend back—even if it means accepting help from Darien Cassel, the leader of the Seven Devils, the most feared Darkslaying circle in the city.

Darien specializes in tracking down demons and criminals that are better off dead than alive, so when he takes a job to track down Loren and finds out she is human—and couldn't hurt a fly if her life depended on it—he decides to protect her instead of turn her in for a reward. As much as Loren doesn't want to admit it, Darien is her best and only chance at finding her friend alive, if she can somehow manage to get along with him—and not fall head-over-heels in love with him in the process, which is far easier said than done.

When more women start disappearing, and some of them slowly turn up dead, Loren and Darien's search for answers takes them deep into Angelthene's corrupt underbelly, where they discover a dark secret that threatens to unravel their world. And when tragedy strikes, Loren learns that love can make an ordinary person do extraordinary things.

Up next is The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling. This is the first in a witchy romance series set during autumn and I loved it so much. What I loved the most is that there's a balance between romance, magic, and plot. It was a lot of fun and I can't wait to revisit it in the future and read the next ones. Synopsis incoming...

New York Times bestselling author Rachel Hawkins, writing as Erin Sterling, casts a spell with a spine-tingling romance full of wishes, witches, and hexes gone wrong.

Nine years ago, Vivienne Jones nursed her broken heart like any young witch would: vodka, weepy music, bubble baths…and a curse on the horrible boyfriend. Sure, Vivi knows she shouldn’t use her magic this way, but with only an “orchard hayride” scented candle on hand, she isn’t worried it will cause him anything more than a bad hair day or two.

That is until Rhys Penhallow, descendent of the town’s ancestors, breaker of hearts, and annoyingly just as gorgeous as he always was, returns to Graves Glen, Georgia. What should be a quick trip to recharge the town’s ley lines and make an appearance at the annual fall festival turns disastrously wrong. With one calamity after another striking Rhys, Vivi realizes her silly little Ex Hex may not have been so harmless after all.

Suddenly, Graves Glen is under attack from murderous wind-up toys, a pissed off ghost, and a talking cat with some interesting things to say. Vivi and Rhys have to ignore their off the charts chemistry to work together to save the town and find a way to break the break-up curse before it’s too late.

These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong is the first in a historical fantasy duology set in 1920s Shanghai. It's a Romeo & Juliet retelling with a murder mystery and warring gangs. The book was so spooky and mysterious which gave me such great fall-read vibes. I loved this duology so much and can see myself rereading during many fall seasons to come.

The year is 1926, and Shanghai hums to the tune of debauchery.

A blood feud between two gangs runs the streets red, leaving the city helpless in the grip of chaos. At the heart of it all is eighteen-year-old Juliette Cai, a former flapper who has returned to assume her role as the proud heir of the Scarlet Gang—a network of criminals far above the law. Their only rivals in power are the White Flowers, who have fought the Scarlets for generations. And behind every move is their heir, Roma Montagov, Juliette’s first love…and first betrayal.

But when gangsters on both sides show signs of instability culminating in clawing their own throats out, the people start to whisper. Of a contagion, a madness. Of a monster in the shadows. As the deaths stack up, Juliette and Roma must set their guns—and grudges—aside and work together, for if they can’t stop this mayhem, then there will be no city left for either to rule.

Perfect for fans of The Last Magician and Descendant of the Crane, this heart-stopping debut is an imaginative Romeo and Juliet retelling set in 1920s Shanghai, with rival gangs and a monster in the depths of the Huangpu River.

Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu is the perfect spooky queer graphic novel. The artwork is gorgeous and the story is just as great. It's spooky, heartwarming, and all around a light fun read in the lead up to Halloween.

A story of love and demons, family and witchcraft.

Nova Huang knows more about magic than your average teen witch. She works at her grandmothers' bookshop, where she helps them loan out spell books and investigate any supernatural occurrences in their New England town.

One fateful night, she follows reports of a white wolf into the woods, and she comes across the unexpected: her childhood crush, Tam Lang, battling a horse demon in the woods. As a werewolf, Tam has been wandering from place to place for years, unable to call any town home.

Pursued by dark forces eager to claim the magic of wolves and out of options, Tam turns to Nova for help. Their latent feelings are rekindled against the backdrop of witchcraft, untested magic, occult rituals, and family ties both new and old in this enchanting tale of self-discovery.

Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin is the first book in a witchy fantasy trilogy and just so wonderful. While I haven't finished the trilogy, I adore this first book so much and truly think that it can be read as a standalone if you want it to be. It's one of my favorites and I love reading it in the fall season.

Bound as one to love, honor, or burn.

Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.

Sworn to the Church as a Chasseur, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. His path was never meant to cross with Lou's, but a wicked stunt forces them into an impossible union—holy matrimony.

The war between witches and Church is an ancient one, and Lou's most dangerous enemies bring a fate worse than fire. Unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, a choice must be made.

And love makes fools of us all.

Now getting into the books I'm looking forward to reading during spooky season, let's start with Payback's A Witch by Lana Harper. This is a sapphic witchy romcom that was on my tbr last year but I didn't get around to it for a variety of reasons. However, I have a copy this year and I'm incredibly excited to finally get to it (and buddy read it with a friend!).

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina meets The L Word in this fresh, sizzling rom-com by Lana Harper.

Emmy Harlow is a witch but not a very powerful one—in part because she hasn't been home to the magical town of Thistle Grove in years. Her self-imposed exile has a lot to do with a complicated family history and a desire to forge her own way in the world, and only the very tiniest bit to do with Gareth Blackmoore, heir to the most powerful magical family in town and casual breaker of hearts and destroyer of dreams.

But when a spellcasting tournament that her family serves as arbiters for approaches, it turns out the pull of tradition (or the truly impressive parental guilt trip that comes with it) is strong enough to bring Emmy back. She's determined to do her familial duty; spend some quality time with her best friend, Linden Thorn; and get back to her real life in Chicago.

On her first night home, Emmy runs into Talia Avramov—an all-around badass adept in the darker magical arts—who is fresh off a bad breakup . . . with Gareth Blackmoore. Talia had let herself be charmed, only to discover that Gareth was also seeing Linden—unbeknownst to either of them. And now she and Linden want revenge. Only one question stands: Is Emmy in?

But most concerning of all: Why can't she stop thinking about the terrifyingly competent, devastatingly gorgeous, wickedly charming Talia Avramov?

Up next I'm excited to read The Kiss Curse by Erin Sterling, the sequel to The Ex Hex that I mentioned earlier. I loved the main character when she was a side character in the first book so I'm quite excited to get around to her story this time around!

Welcome to Spooky Season!! The follow-up to Erin Sterling’s New York Times bestselling hit The Ex Hex features fan favorite Gwyn and the spine-tinglingly handsome Wells Penhallow as they battle a new band of witches and their own magical chemistry.

Gwyn Jones is perfectly happy with her life in Graves Glen. She, her mom, and her cousin have formed a new and powerful coven; she’s running a successful witchcraft shop, Something Wicked; and she’s started mentoring some of the younger witches in town. As Halloween approaches, there’s only one problem—Llewellyn “Wells” Penhallow.

Wells has come to Graves Glen to re-establish his family’s connection to the town they founded as well as to make a new life for himself after years of being the dutiful son in Wales. When he opens up a shop of his own, Penhallow’s, just across the street from Something Wicked, he quickly learns he’s gotten more than he bargained for in going up against Gwyn.

When their professional competition leads to a very personal—and very hot—kiss, both Wells and Gwyn are determined to stay away from each other, convinced the kiss was just a magical fluke. But when a mysterious new coven of witches come to town and Gwyn’s powers begin fading, she and Wells must work together to figure out just what these new witches want and how to restore Gwyn’s magic before it’s too late.

I'm incredibly excited to get to The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna. This is a new release with witches, found family, romance, etc that I've heard nothing but good things about. I already have my copy and it'll be my next read after I finish my current one. Plus, the cover is so cute!

A warm and uplifting novel about an isolated witch whose opportunity to embrace a quirky new family—and a new love—changes the course of her life.

As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don’t mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she’s used to being alone and she follows the rules...with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos "pretending" to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously.

But someone does. An unexpected message arrives, begging her to travel to the remote and mysterious Nowhere House to teach three young witches how to control their magic. It breaks all of the rules, but Mika goes anyway, and is immediately tangled up in the lives and secrets of not only her three charges, but also an absent archaeologist, a retired actor, two long-suffering caretakers, and…Jamie. The handsome and prickly librarian of Nowhere House would do anything to protect the children, and as far as he’s concerned, a stranger like Mika is a threat. An irritatingly appealing threat.

As Mika begins to find her place at Nowhere House, the thought of belonging somewhere begins to feel like a real possibility. But magic isn't the only danger in the world, and when a threat comes knocking at their door, Mika will need to decide whether to risk everything to protect a found family she didn’t know she was looking for....

Then I have The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen. I got this in my Fairyloot box this summer and I'm incredibly intrigued. I've heard it described as a cozy contemporary fantasy and that just sounds awesome. Plus, the reviews have been stellar for it, so I'm incredibly invested in getting to it soon.

Hart is a marshal, tasked with patrolling the strange and magical wilds of Tanria. It’s an unforgiving job, and Hart’s got nothing but time to ponder his loneliness.

Mercy never has a moment to herself. She’s been single-handedly keeping Birdsall & Son Undertakers afloat in defiance of sullen jerks like Hart, who seems to have a gift for showing up right when her patience is thinnest.

After yet another exasperating run-in with Mercy, Hart finds himself penning a letter addressed simply to “A Friend”. Much to his surprise, an anonymous letter comes back in return, and a tentative friendship is born.

If only Hart knew he’s been baring his soul to the person who infuriates him most – Mercy. As the dangers from Tanria grow closer, so do the unlikely correspondents. But can their blossoming romance survive the fated discovery that their pen pals are their worst nightmares – each other?

And, lastly, I am looking forward to These Witches Don't Burn by Isabel Sterling. This is the first in a YA sapphic witchy duology that's been on my radar for a few years now. I hope this will be the year that I finally get around to reading it as it sounds so cute and fun.

Hannah's a witch, but not the kind you're thinking of. She's the real deal, an Elemental with the power to control fire, earth, water, and air. But even though she lives in Salem, Massachusetts, her magic is a secret she has to keep to herself. If she's ever caught using it in front of a Reg (read: non-witch), she could lose it. For good. So, Hannah spends most of her time avoiding her ex-girlfriend (and fellow Elemental Witch) Veronica, hanging out with her best friend, and working at the Fly by Night Cauldron selling candles and crystals to tourists, goths, and local Wiccans.

But dealing with her ex is the least of Hannah's concerns when a terrifying blood ritual interrupts the end-of-school-year bonfire. Evidence of dark magic begins to appear all over Salem, and Hannah's sure it's the work of a deadly Blood Witch. The issue is, her coven is less than convinced, forcing Hannah to team up with the last person she wants to see: Veronica.

While the pair attempt to smoke out the Blood Witch at a house party, Hannah meets Morgan, a cute new ballerina in town. But trying to date amid a supernatural crisis is easier said than done, and Hannah will have to test the limits of her power if she's going to save her coven and get the girl, especially when the attacks on Salem's witches become deadlier by the day.

Thanks for reading!

Unboxing: Fairyloot's "Blood & Honey" Collector's Edition Box

The time has finally come! My Blood & Honey special edition box from Fairyloot has finally arrived! Let me just tell you guys...this box was stressful. Buying it initially was so stressful with website stress and then I had to get a new debit card since their site was compromised. Then this box was delayed not once but twice. But, eventually it arrived. I got one of the first boxes to have shipped and it was perfect since I got it delivered right before I left (if it had even been a day later it would have been another month before I could go back and get it).

I've seen a lot of people complaining around this box ranging from not having their books near enough to relief (fair, but I preorder multiple copies like the mess I am) to not thinking the box was worth it for the money. Personally, I disagree and think that this box was more than worth it for the money and pretty perfect in every way.

In the months since I ordered this box, I sometimes wondered on what the items would be that hadn't already been revealed. I ended up getting everything I had hoped would be an item! I love this entire box and think it was more than worth it for the cost, even with international shipping, and I'm so excited to share it with you guys today! Let's go ahead and dive in!

(Oh, and there will obviously be spoilers for the box)

Up first I want to talk about the book. This edition of Blood & Honey was signed by the author, had glittery sprayed edges (to match the first book), and had artwork on the reverse of the dust jacket. Having read Blood & Honey already, I am obsessed with the scene they chose for the dust jacket and the artwork itself. I'm definitely super in love with it! There was also a short bonus content scene included (on a separate booklet).

As for the items, we got five main items and a bonus art print as an apology for the box being delayed. There were two items that they had revealed beforehand that I knew were coming but the rest were a complete surprise. Like I mentioned above, I was so excited to see that I loved every single one of the items and will use each of them.

The first item was a gorgeous and fluffy blanket with the quote, "What you are now is not what you’ve always been, nor is it what you always will be. You are a snake. Shed your skin if it no longer serves you, transform into something different. Something better." This was designed by @noverantale. I haven't yet taken it out of the packaging since I don't have a spot to store it yet, so here's a link to a post with a picture of the design!

The next item was this gorgeous storage tin that has the quote, "Blood is easily given. Tears--the pain that causes them--are not," which was designed by @chattynora. This is absolutely perfect because I have a few Serpent & Dove pins and small trinkets that I need a way to store until I have bookshelves again. I was hoping there would be a mug or a storage tin like this and I was so excited when I saw that this was included!

Up next was a gorgeous, full size wood-wick candle from @bookishburns. It is La Fôret Des Yeux themed and smells like wild patchouli, distressed leather, and fruits. Honestly, I love the smell. It's a perfect balance to where it's not an overpowering scent either. The label is pretty cute and was created by @blanca.designs. I don't think I'll burn it simply because I just don't burn candles but I love having them for pictures and to smell every once in a while.

Then was a gorgeous enamel two-pin set from @jezhawk. One pin features a dove with the quote, "Love makes fools of us all, darling," and the other has a snake with the quote, "The world needs a whit less hate and a trifle more love." This is absolutely stunning and I'm so excited to add these to my collection. I'm hoping one day to have a small pin banner dedicated to this series and these will definitely look amazing on it!

The next item was a gilded tarot card deck with character art from @oblivionsdream. These are stunning cards and I can't wait to check out Fairyloot's page to see what character is represented on each card. Some of them are pretty obvious but others aren't as much since I don't really remember what most of the characters look like. These are stunning, though, and I'm so excited to use them in pictures.

The last item was a bonus art print of Lou, Reid, Coco, and Ansel that was added as a thank you for waiting. This was designed by Katherine Britt. I do like this print and the artwork is pretty but I'm not quite sure how I feel about it in regards to the overall series. Still a nice bonus addition though! I did forget to take a picture of it but you can find an unboxing of one here

September 2020 Wrap-Up

Hello everyone! Today I am so excited to be bringing you all my reading wrap-up for the month of September. This month was actually pretty crazy in terms of the number of books I managed to read (a whopping 14!). I was stressed most of the month and didn't stick to my TBR very well, but I did manage to finish two series in less than a week. Hopefully in October I'll be able to finish my TBR and have as productive as a reading month!

Book Review: "Blood & Honey" by Shelby Mahurin

Blood & Honey (Serpent & Dove, #2)
Title: Blood & Honey
Author: Shelby Mahurin
Series: "Serpent & Dove" #2
Genre: YA Fantasy
Page Length: 532
Publication Date: September 1, 2020
Rating: 4.5 // 5 stars

*I was provided a free e-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own*

Okay so if you've been following my blog for a while, you will know that Serpent & Dove was my favorite book of 2019. Blood & Honey was my *most* anticipated release of this year. And I will start this review by saying that I enjoyed this book. Did I love it? No. Is Serpent & Dove still my favorite? Yes. But did I enjoy this book? Also yes.

So I've actually been sitting on my thoughts for a few days and ending up raising my rating. I originally gave Blood & Honey four stars but, after looking back on it, I decided to raise it because of how good this book was.

Let me be clear: this book is not like Serpent & Dove. Serpent & Dove has just the right amount of angst amongst all the fluff and humor to be a multi-faceted book. But there's a feeling of hope throughout. I'm always happy reading Serpent & Dove even if the characters are in tough situations.

Blood & Honey is not that.

I knew going in that Blood & Honey was going to be different. Not only is doing the same book twice boring but, with the way things were left at the end of Serpent & Dove, it wouldn't have been realistic. Blood & Honey is a natural progression of the situations that we were in at the end of book one.

Blood & Honey made my heart ache almost from the very beginning. This is not a happy book. The characters are in a very tough situation at the end of the first book and there's very little time passed between that ending and this beginning. We're tossed right into the mess of it all and things are happening right away. Every scene had a purpose and added to the plot or character development even if it doesn't initially seem that way.

Serpent & Dove is a layered book but still relatively uncomplicated whereas Blood & Honey is complex and makes you think. Decisions made in the beginning were impacting events towards the end of the book. Little offhand comments in the first few chapters were thought back to when the climax was coming. This was an incredibly intricate storyline and I really liked that. I liked getting the foreshadowing and how it made me have so many theories as I read. I liked that it made me think.

One of the main things that I liked about Blood & Honey, apart from all the clever foreshadowing, was the expansion of the world. I loved Serpent & Dove but at the end of reading it I was wanting to know more about the witches and other aspects of the magic system. I was really happy to see that explored in much more depth in this book. Not only did we get to see more of Lou's type of magic, but also blood witches and other magical creatures. I honestly can't wait to see more of all of it in the third (and final) book!

The characters go through a lot. It seems like everything that can go wrong for them, goes wrong. Add in tense moments between each other, mistakes they made, and the stress of their situation and no one is really having a good time. There is one character in particular who my heart went out to the entire book and just gave me all the feels even more than the others. Also, I found myself really becoming more attached to a certain character from book one that I hadn't really felt anything about before so that felt nice.

I've seen a few people nagging on Lou and Reid in this book but I just think that the way they were portrayed and developed throughout was natural and realistic. After the ending in book one and the situation they're in during Blood & Honey, there's a lot of strain on them and their relationship. I think what would have been more annoying, for me, is to see everything return to the way it was between them before the ending of Serpent & Dove. Can you tell I'm trying not to spoil anything and that's why everything sounds so vague? I thought that their relationship development in this book was actually really well done, even if a bit frustrating at times.

There were a few things that made me drop my rating but I don't want to spoil anything and to talk about them would do that. I'll just stick with saying that there were some unresolved questions I had and some inconsistencies that I noticed. Additionally, there were a few times where I felt the story wasn't grabbing me as much as the first book had. I think that can be attributed to the two books having such different feels but it's still something that I was noticing as I read. I also will say that, although I enjoyed this book and gave it four and a half stars, I think that there is a little bit of second-book slump happening here.

Overall, Blood & Honey made me an emotional mess. Out of all the possibilities I could have predicted, the way this ended was not one of them. There were a couple things at the end that really hit me and I am still an emotional mess. I am so excited for the third book and I honestly can't wait for all of my copies and book boxes to come in so that I can be immersed in the feels again!

Thanks for reading!

Favorite Books of 2019

It's now time for one of my favorite annual posts where I discuss my favorite books of the previous year! This past 2019 was an insane year for me in all aspects of life, but especially in reading. I read 138 books in the span of the last twelve months and narrowing down my top 10 was definitely challenging for me. There are so many other books that I could have put on this list, but if you'd like to know more of my favorites, check out my Goodreads shelf here.

A few little things before going in: I narrowed it down to just 10 this year because a longer list would be a lot in a blog post. Additionally, I included books in the same series as one spot because if I'd kept them separate, this list would have been dominated by three series. Now that that's out of the way, without further ado, let's dive into the books I loved in 2019!

#10: Only A Breath Apart by Katie McGarry

I read this back in June and was blown away. This book impacted me in ways I can't even describe. I saw so much of myself in these characters and this story and I felt so seen. While I can relate to characters in other novels, I felt that this story especially hit me hard because I could understand a lot of the situations more. I will admit to crying a lot in this book. I had always enjoyed Katie's books when I'd read them previously but this book really cemented in Katie's place on my favorite authors list.

#9: The Last Namsara & The Caged Queen by Kristen Ciccarelli

The Caged Queen (Iskari, #2)

I'd been wanting to read The Last Namsara since it first came out and I was lucky enough to be sent all three books in this series in exchange for review. I finished the first two in the last bits of 2019 and I'm very much looking forward to the third. What really made these books hit this list was the fact that I definitely binge-read as much of these books as I could. Both of these are pretty different from each other but I thought that really shows Kristen's diverse writing ability. After these two, I'm very excited to see what she does next with the final book.

#8: A Wicked Trilogy by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Jennifer is one of my favorite authors of all time and I was so excited to dive into another series of hers. I binge-read this one over the summer and absolutely fell in love with the characters and story. It's set in New Orleans, a place I've always wanted to visit, and is all about fae and fae-hunters. It was a wonderful ride from start to finish that had me laughing, crying, and throwing the book across the room (which, as all readers know, is the highest praise). I'm very excited to dive into the spin-off sequel novellas as soon as the third one is released later this year.

#7: A Fallen Hero by Sara A. Noë

A Fallen Hero (Chronicles of Avilésor: War of the Realms #1)

This was one of the more surprising placements on this list. When I was first contacted about reviewing this book, I was interested in the story but had reservations since I hadn't seen much conversation around it. I'm so glad that I gave it a go because it was a wonderful ride. It's such an interesting story concept and, despite being over 450 pages, I felt like I flew through it. I never wanted it to end and I already can't wait for the sequel to come out later this year.

#6: Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

Red, White & Royal Blue

Up next I have another surprise placement. I don't tend to reach for or read a lot of contemporaries because I prefer my stories to have something else going on besides just the romance. However, there was a lot of hype surrounding this one and it actually sounded like something I'd be interested in, so I preordered it. I ended up reading it in almost one sitting and absolutely loved it. I was laughing, I was crying, and I was so invested in this book and these characters. I can't wait to reread it soon and also see what the author does next!

#5: Stalking Jack the Ripper series by Kerri Maniscalco

While I read the first book back when it came out many years ago, I didn't actually get around to reading the rest of these books until 2019. I don't know why, since Stalking Jack the Ripper was a book that I absolutely loved. However, I finally read them all this year and absolutely fell in love even more than I already was. Every book took the characters on a different journey and development and it was honestly such a joy to read it all.

#4: Witchlands series by Susan Dennard

While I read Truthwitch at the end of 2018, I read the rest of these books in 2019 to catch up with the series and fell in love with them. I think Bloodwitch is my favorite so far and I can't wait to see what happens in the next few books in the series. These books are just so interesting and fun and suspenseful. The world is interesting, the magic exciting, and the characters compelling. I can't wait to reread them soon!

#3: Kingsbane by Claire Legrand

Furyborn was one of my favorite books of 2018 so it's no surprise that Kingsbane also landed a spot on my favorites list. This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2019 and it definitely blew me away. So much happens in this book and there were so many mind-blowing moments. I definitely was completely destroyed by the ending of this book and I can't believe the massive cliffhangers that we got left with. I just have one thing to say...I really need a copy of Lightbringer already.

#2: The City of Brass & The Kingdom of Copper by S.A. Chakraborty

These first two books in the Daevabad trilogy also were a complete shock to me when I read them. To be fair, I'd heard nothing but good things about them but I didn't really have the desire to get copies of them until I won a giveaway for the first book and ended up with an ARC of the second. I binged them one after the other and fell in love. There was not a moment while reading these where I wanted to put them down. The characters are phenomenal, the world extremely vivid and interesting, and the political intrigue and social issues kept me turning the pages as fast as I could. I am so excited for the final book to release in 2020, though I am sad to see this trilogy come to an end so soon after I discovered it.

#1: Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin

My favorite book of the year definitely goes to Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin. Not only is this book extremely gorgeous, but the story itself is a perfect combination of a lot of my favorite tropes and genres. We have a fantasy romance with some enemies-to-lovers, arranged marriage, witch vs witch hunter, and even more. I read this book so quickly and I think about it all the time. I've been wanting to reread it from the moment that I finished the last page and I can't wait to actually be able to reread it later this year.

Anticipated 2020 Book Releases

Hey everyone! We are at the start of my favorite time of the year: the holidays and winter break! This is my favorite time of the year for a few reasons, the first being Christmas, the second being winter break and time off school, and the third being all the amazing bookish blog posts I get to write this time of year! I love wrapping up the year and looking forward to the next one, which is what I'm going to be doing in this post today.

This upcoming year (and decade in general), are promising to bring a lot of amazing book releases. I have many upcoming releases on my radar and preorder list, but I thought I'd narrow it down to my top 10 to share with you all! Some of these are coming very soon, others may be months away, but I'm excited for all of them nonetheless!

Image result for a fallen hero sara noeAt number 10, we have the second book in the Chronicles of Avilésor by Sara A. Noë, Phantom's Mask. The first book, A Fallen Hero, was one of my favorite reads of 2019 and I've been eagerly anticipating any news on the second book. We have no cover yet but there is a title and an excerpt already that have me so excited for its release.

Image result for an ember in the ashes seriesNumber 9 we have the fourth An Ember in the Ashes novel by Sabaa Tahir. While I admit that I haven't yet read the third book in this series, that's only because I am planning on doing a complete series binge when the final book releases. There's no confirmed release date yet but based on a lot of stuff from the author's writing updates, I hope it will be coming in 2020.

Image result for kerri maniscalcoFor number 8 I have Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco. This is another book with no cover yet but we do have a synopsis that is absolutely killing me! I absolutely adore Kerri's Stalking Jack the Ripper series and I am so excited to see what she's going to do next. This one is the first in a new series and is set to come out in the fall!

Image result for trying to live with the deadAt number 7 I actually have two books but they're within the same series: the 8th and 9th novels in The Veil Diaries series by B.L. Brunnemer. It's no secret that this series is one of my favorites and we're finally approaching the end (well, is it the end when there's a sequel series following the same characters but a different storyline?). I cannot wait to reread the entire series in anticipation of the newest book, which should be out in January while the last should be out later in the year.

Image result for witchlands seriesFor number 6 I have the fourth Witchlands novel by Susan Dennard. There's been some talk that it's not going to come out until 2021, which would be sad, but as of right now there's still a chance it will  be 2020 so I'm going to include it on this list. This is a series I discovered at the end of 2018 and binged in the first few months of this year. I absolutely fell in love with the characters, the world, and Susan's writing. I cannot wait for the next book!

Image result for empirium trilogyNumber 5 we have Lightbringer by  Claire Legrand, the final book in the Empirium trilogy. I am absolutely stoked for this book. After the cliffhanger in Kingsbane, I've been desperately needing to know what happens and we're only a few months away (okay, like 10 months away but still). I'm sad the trilogy is coming to a close but I'm also excited to finally have resolution with the characters and a (hopefully) happy ending.

The Empire of GoldAt number 4 I have The Empire of Gold by S.A. Chakraborty. This is the third and final book in the Daevabad trilogy and I'm so excited. I discovered this series at the beginning of the year and, after binging them rather quickly, I am dying to know what happens next. I'm already planning a reread of the first two books and I'm just so excited for when the time will finally arrive.

Image result for sarah j maasFor number 3 I have the fourth A Court of Thorns and Roses novel. While it's not confirmed to be out in 2020, the most recent announcement said it would be coming at the end of 2020, so I'm holding out hope for it. I'm so excited for this spin-off novel and I can't wait to see how Sarah writes these new character perspectives and new story.

Shelby MahurinAt number 2 is Blood & Honey by Shelby Mahurin, the sequel to Serpent & Dove aka my favorite book of 2019. I absolutely adored Serpent & Dove and I cannot wait to get more of the characters, magic system, and high stakes in the sequel. I also just know that there's going to be an absolutely gorgeous cover for it to match the first one.

House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City, #1)And, lastly, we have House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas. This is the first book in Sarah's new adult fantasy series and I am so excited for it. ARCs have started going out and I have serious jealousy at everyone who's gotten one. I already have four editions preordered and I know that more will probably follow. I have such faith in Sarah and I cannot wait to read a new story from her set in a contemporary fantasy world!

Thanks for reading!
