Spring Cleaning Book Tag

Hey all! It's been a while since I've done a book tag and I thought it was well overdue. As it's spring  where I am and a lot of us are stuck inside our homes, I figured this book tag was quite fitting. There's a total of 8 questions (but I was unable to find the original creator's video for it). Let's just dive in!

1. The Struggle to Get Started
a book or series you struggle to begin because of its size

The Priory of the Orange Tree

There are a ton of books and series that I could choose for this prompt, but I'm going to go with The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon. I love Samantha's Bone Season series and I've heard nothing but amazing things about this other fantasy of hers, but I'm so scared. On one hand, I love big books. On the other hand, they terrify me. I'm just so intimidated by the sheer mass of this book even though it actually has less pages than some books I've read before. One day I will get to it (maybe via ebook though).

2. Cleaning Out the Closet
a book or series you want to unhaul

Crave (Crave, #1)

I actually want to do a big unhaul because I like to do one at least once a year, but with most of my books in storage I can't do that at the moment. However, Crave by Tracy Wolff is one that I am ready to get rid of. I both received and read this book in April and...I hated it. I could rant for at least an hour about all the things I thought weren't done well in this book (or you could read my review here). Overall, it was a disappointing book that I'm going to be donating or selling very soon.

3. Opening the Window and Letting Fresh Air In
a book that was refreshing

She's With Me (She's With Me, #1)

This pick can actually be very cliche and contains a lot of YA contemporary tropes in it, but I'm still going to choose She's With Me by Jessica Cunsolo. The reason I chose it is because, when I read it this year, I had been reading a lot of high fantasy or slave narratives or other denser reads. A light-hearted contemporary that still dealt with difficult issues and real-life problems was quite a breath of fresh air.

4. Washing out the Sheets
a scene you wish you could rewrite

I honestly couldn't think of a specific scene for this prompt, so I'll go with the broad answer of "any scene where one of my favorite characters dies." There are definitely a few books I can think of where I would like to go back and change a death just for my own person love.

5. Throwing out Unnecessary Knick-Knacks
a book in a series you didn’t think was necessary

The Heart of Betrayal (The Remnant Chronicles, #2)

My pick for this one is The Heart of Betrayal by Mary E. Pearson. I do want to say, though, that I can't actually remember anything that happened in this book. All I remember is being thoroughly bored. I want to do a reread of the first book and this one so that I can finally finish out the trilogy, but as for right now all my experiences with this book have been of boredom.

6. Polishing Doorknobs
a book that had a clean finish

Red, White & Royal Blue

There are definitely a lot that I could have picked for this one but I'm going to go with Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. There were a lot of different subplots and different storylines so the fact that it all was resolved neatly at the end makes me very happy. I also just love the ending, so that could be a reason why I think it qualifies for this prompt.

7. Reaching to Dust the Fan
a book that tried too hard to relay a certain message

Forgiven Are the Starry-Eyed

I'm going to go with Forgiven are the Starry-Eyed by Christine DorĂ© Miller for this one. I read this last year and it just wasn't good. I will say that I appreciate the fact that the author tried to tackle a difficult topic and I wouldn't say that they tried "too hard" in relaying a message about it. However, I do think that the topic wasn't handled as well as it could have been. I have an entire review here if you'd like to know more of my thoughts. It was quite disappointing to have a book tackle dating abuse in a way that fell short.

8. The Tiring Yet Satisfying Finish
a series that was tiring but satisfying to get through

I had to pick The Dark Artifices by Cassandra Clare for this one. I love the story and the characters but I really struggled to finish this trilogy. The first book was amazing--I fell in love and I was so excited for what was going to come next. And then the second book happened and I was so incredibly disappointed. I was bored, I was rolling my eyes, and I wasn't connecting with the main storyline. The third book brought it back a little bit but still felt very long at times. Overall, it was very satisfying when I finally finished the last chapters because I did like the ending but my experience with this trilogy was mostly just me being bored.

Thanks for reading!
xoxo

15 Bingeable Book Recommendations (& Free Reading Resources)

Hello all! Wherever you are, whether it be sequestered at home or working an essential job, I hope you are doing okay during the current state of the world. If you're like me, you've been stuck at home for a while now (one month exactly for me!) and have started to grow bored of different things. I personally have way too much homework but I also have a lot of extra time on my hands. I also thought that since some people might have a lot of extra reading time on their hands, I thought I would recommend some bingeable books!

I have tried to make this a list of books varying by genre and age range. Additionally, I thought I would provide a few resources to help you all read during this time. I will start this post by recommending the books but all information and resources will be discussed and linked down below!

The City of Brass (The Daevabad Trilogy, #1)4. The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty
Adult Historical Fantasy

Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trade she uses to get by—palm readings, zars, healings—are all tricks, sleights of hand, learned skills; a means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles.

But when Nahri accidentally summons an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to accept that the magical world she thought only existed in childhood stories is real. For the warrior tells her a new tale: across hot, windswept sands teeming with creatures of fire, and rivers where the mythical marid sleep; past ruins of once-magnificent human metropolises, and mountains where the circling hawks are not what they seem, lies Daevabad, the legendary city of brass, a city to which Nahri is irrevocably bound.

In that city, behind gilded brass walls laced with enchantments, behind the six gates of the six djinn tribes, old resentments are simmering. And when Nahri decides to enter this world, she learns that true power is fierce and brutal. That magic cannot shield her from the dangerous web of court politics. That even the cleverest of schemes can have deadly consequences.

After all, there is a reason they say be careful what you wish for...

Reading Resources

I am now going to get into some of the resources and tips for reading and book-buying during this time. There's information not only on how you can support the book industry at this time, but also how you can read and listen to books for free in what is no doubt a financially unstable time for many.

To start, if you have the extra funds to purchase physical books at this time, a lot of independent bookstores are struggling during this pandemic and could really use support. Many bookshops that I follow are offering online orders with free shipping, curbside pickup, or other options to still support them such as purchasing a gift card to use later or by preordering upcoming releases. These options will vary by location, but if you can support your local indie it will help a lot against making sure they don't go out of business (for more information on why we need indie bookstores and larger bookstores such as Barnes & Noble, Indigo, and Waterstones, check out this article here).

There are three other ways you can help independent bookstores. The first is by ordering through Bookshop. It's similar to Amazon in pricing and ease of ordering, but most of the profits go to independent bookstores, authors, and publishers in a different way than Amazon orders. The other way you can help is by listening to audiobooks through Libro.fm. Most independent stores will have links specific to that store to get them commission so be sure to check if your store offers Libro.fm subscriptions. Lastly, you can donate to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation (BINC) which is providing assistance to booksellers not just during COVID-19 but all the time.

Scribd, one of the leading digital libraries out there, is offering 30-days free with no commitment during this pandemic (you don't even have to put in your credit card--just make an account and get free books). They have thousands of ebooks, audiobooks, magazines, and more. There are even some of the books on this list available there!

Audible is also hundreds of audiobooks available to stream for free right now at this link. There are audiobooks for all ages and across multiple languages (especially awesome if you're trying to improve your multi-lingual skills). There's also a ton of amazing Kindle ebook deals everyday for bestselling books. You can check each day to see

Lastly, if you have a library card a lot of local libraries have digital collections full of ebooks and audiobooks. Not only that, but a lot of libraries also have music streaming services and learning options for younger kids. This varies by library, of course, but a lot of libraries have been hosting these collections for years and this is an easy way to show support to a local library during this time.

I hope that these recommendations and all the extra information has been, at the very least, interesting and helpful to you all. Books are a wonderful way to escape the real world and I think that is needed now more than ever.

Thanks for reading!

Valentine's Day Book Tag

Hello all and Happy Valentine's Day! I hope your day has been enjoyable thus far and that you're staying warm wherever you are (it currently feels like a bitter tundra where I am). I figured what better way to incorporate Valentine's Day on my blog than with a book tag! There are ten book-ish questions here and I'm so excited to chat with you about all of them!

1) Stand Alone Book You Love

I actually don't read a lot of standalones. I typically reach for series or companions because I've found the characters I get the most attached to are ones that I can go on numerous adventures with. That being said, Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston is a standalone romance that I absolutely adore! Since I finished it I've been so excited to reread it and I can't wait to revisit these characters.

Red, White & Royal Blue

2) Dystopian Book You Love

I'm going to have to go with The Host by Stephenie Meyer for this one. I absolutely adore this book. Some people consider it to be just sci-fi, I think it falls under dystopian because it's set in a future Earth overrun by aliens. I cannot tell you just how much I love this book--it's so unique and gripping and just amazing.

The Host (The Host, #1)

3) A Book That You Love But No One Else Talks About

This one is a more recent find but it is A Fallen Hero by Sara A. NoĂ«. I got the chance to read this back in August and fell in love. It's such an interesting world with a found family on the run that absolutely make you fall in love with them. However, it's a self-published book with no publisher backing so I haven't seen many people discussing it. I'm trying to change that, though, and I'm actively trying to promote it to all of my fellow book-nerds.

A Fallen Hero (Chronicles of Avilésor: War of the Realms #1)

4) Favorite Book Couple

I'm going to have to go with Feyre & Rhysand for this one. I have loved them since ACOMAF and I cannot wait to reread about all their adventures together. Seeing the unconditional love they have for each other and reading all their cute scenes just makes me adore them. (Image: Charlie Bowater)

Image result for feyre and rhysand

5) Book That Other People Love But You Haven’t Read Yet

There are so many that I could put for this question but I'm going with Renegades by Marissa Meyer. I don't know why I haven't read that yet, seeing as I've liked every other thing I've read by Marissa, but I just haven't. I do own the first two as ebooks, though and am hopefully going to get a chance to read them this year!

Renegades (Renegades, #1)

6) A Book With Red on the Cover

I decided to go with Every Last Breath by Jennifer L. Armentrout (the third book in the Dark Elements trilogy) for this one. The new covers after they went through a change are absolutely stunning and this one is no exception. I love it and the main color scheme is definitely red.

Every Last Breath (The Dark Elements, #3)

7) A Book With Pink on the Cover

I struggled a bit with this one because I wanted to find a book I hadn't talked about yet that I absolutely loved and had a prominent romance, because Valentine's Day. In the end, I realized that Long Way Home by Katie McGarry fit perfectly! I have read four of Katie's books now and have all the rest on my TBR because I've never read a book from her that I don't like. What's even more amazing is that these books are contemporaries or romances but they also have other aspects to them and the characters aren't solely focused on just the romance.

Long Way Home (Thunder Road, #3)

8) You were given a box of chocolate what fictional boyfriend/ or girlfriend would given them to you.

I was trying to think of who this would be and I'd have to say Thomas Cresswell from the Stalking Jack the Ripper series. He just seems like the kind of character who would go super romantic for Valentine's Day.

Image result for thomas cresswell

9) You are Single on Valentines Day. What Book would you read? What TV show would you watch? What Movie would you watch?

I'm not single on Valentine's Day, but if I was my lineup would be the following: Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin for something to read; Bones or Teen Wolf for something to binge; and To All the Boys I've Loved Before if I wanted a romcom.

Serpent & Dove (Serpent & Dove, #1)

10) You are in the Book Store. All of a Sudden you get shot with an arrow by Cupid. What New Release will you love?

This one isn't out yet but will be in just a few weeks so I decided to go ahead and include it: House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas. I know that I'm going to love this one, the only thing I'm unsure of is if I'll love it more than ACOTAR or Throne of Glass...

House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City, #1)

Thanks for reading!

Favorite Books of 2019

It's now time for one of my favorite annual posts where I discuss my favorite books of the previous year! This past 2019 was an insane year for me in all aspects of life, but especially in reading. I read 138 books in the span of the last twelve months and narrowing down my top 10 was definitely challenging for me. There are so many other books that I could have put on this list, but if you'd like to know more of my favorites, check out my Goodreads shelf here.

A few little things before going in: I narrowed it down to just 10 this year because a longer list would be a lot in a blog post. Additionally, I included books in the same series as one spot because if I'd kept them separate, this list would have been dominated by three series. Now that that's out of the way, without further ado, let's dive into the books I loved in 2019!

#10: Only A Breath Apart by Katie McGarry

I read this back in June and was blown away. This book impacted me in ways I can't even describe. I saw so much of myself in these characters and this story and I felt so seen. While I can relate to characters in other novels, I felt that this story especially hit me hard because I could understand a lot of the situations more. I will admit to crying a lot in this book. I had always enjoyed Katie's books when I'd read them previously but this book really cemented in Katie's place on my favorite authors list.

Goodreads     |     Review

#9: The Last Namsara & The Caged Queen by Kristen Ciccarelli

The Caged Queen (Iskari, #2)

I'd been wanting to read The Last Namsara since it first came out and I was lucky enough to be sent all three books in this series in exchange for review. I finished the first two in the last bits of 2019 and I'm very much looking forward to the third. What really made these books hit this list was the fact that I definitely binge-read as much of these books as I could. Both of these are pretty different from each other but I thought that really shows Kristen's diverse writing ability. After these two, I'm very excited to see what she does next with the final book.

#8: A Wicked Trilogy by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Jennifer is one of my favorite authors of all time and I was so excited to dive into another series of hers. I binge-read this one over the summer and absolutely fell in love with the characters and story. It's set in New Orleans, a place I've always wanted to visit, and is all about fae and fae-hunters. It was a wonderful ride from start to finish that had me laughing, crying, and throwing the book across the room (which, as all readers know, is the highest praise). I'm very excited to dive into the spin-off sequel novellas as soon as the third one is released later this year.

Goodreads     |     Book 1 Review     |     Book 2 Review     |     Book 3 Review

#7: A Fallen Hero by Sara A. NoĂ«

A Fallen Hero (Chronicles of Avilésor: War of the Realms #1)

This was one of the more surprising placements on this list. When I was first contacted about reviewing this book, I was interested in the story but had reservations since I hadn't seen much conversation around it. I'm so glad that I gave it a go because it was a wonderful ride. It's such an interesting story concept and, despite being over 450 pages, I felt like I flew through it. I never wanted it to end and I already can't wait for the sequel to come out later this year.

#6: Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

Red, White & Royal Blue

Up next I have another surprise placement. I don't tend to reach for or read a lot of contemporaries because I prefer my stories to have something else going on besides just the romance. However, there was a lot of hype surrounding this one and it actually sounded like something I'd be interested in, so I preordered it. I ended up reading it in almost one sitting and absolutely loved it. I was laughing, I was crying, and I was so invested in this book and these characters. I can't wait to reread it soon and also see what the author does next!

#5: Stalking Jack the Ripper series by Kerri Maniscalco

While I read the first book back when it came out many years ago, I didn't actually get around to reading the rest of these books until 2019. I don't know why, since Stalking Jack the Ripper was a book that I absolutely loved. However, I finally read them all this year and absolutely fell in love even more than I already was. Every book took the characters on a different journey and development and it was honestly such a joy to read it all.

#4: Witchlands series by Susan Dennard

While I read Truthwitch at the end of 2018, I read the rest of these books in 2019 to catch up with the series and fell in love with them. I think Bloodwitch is my favorite so far and I can't wait to see what happens in the next few books in the series. These books are just so interesting and fun and suspenseful. The world is interesting, the magic exciting, and the characters compelling. I can't wait to reread them soon!

#3: Kingsbane by Claire Legrand

Furyborn was one of my favorite books of 2018 so it's no surprise that Kingsbane also landed a spot on my favorites list. This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2019 and it definitely blew me away. So much happens in this book and there were so many mind-blowing moments. I definitely was completely destroyed by the ending of this book and I can't believe the massive cliffhangers that we got left with. I just have one thing to say...I really need a copy of Lightbringer already.

#2: The City of Brass & The Kingdom of Copper by S.A. Chakraborty

These first two books in the Daevabad trilogy also were a complete shock to me when I read them. To be fair, I'd heard nothing but good things about them but I didn't really have the desire to get copies of them until I won a giveaway for the first book and ended up with an ARC of the second. I binged them one after the other and fell in love. There was not a moment while reading these where I wanted to put them down. The characters are phenomenal, the world extremely vivid and interesting, and the political intrigue and social issues kept me turning the pages as fast as I could. I am so excited for the final book to release in 2020, though I am sad to see this trilogy come to an end so soon after I discovered it.

#1: Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin

My favorite book of the year definitely goes to Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin. Not only is this book extremely gorgeous, but the story itself is a perfect combination of a lot of my favorite tropes and genres. We have a fantasy romance with some enemies-to-lovers, arranged marriage, witch vs witch hunter, and even more. I read this book so quickly and I think about it all the time. I've been wanting to reread it from the moment that I finished the last page and I can't wait to actually be able to reread it later this year.

Thanksgiving Book Tag: 2019 Edition

It's that time of year again! The time where all us Americans gather around with our families and stuff our faces until we can barely move. I'm in London this year so I'm going to be having quite a different Thanksgiving experience from usual. One thing that won't change, though, is me laying around all day eating turkey and also doing this book tag! I'm limiting it to books I've read this year, though, just to make things interesting. Let's go ahead and just dive right in!

1. Bread - What book is purely fluff, and has no real plot line?

I feel like a lot of books can fall into this category but that doesn't necessarily mean that they're not good books. I myself need a fluffy book every once in a while. For this, I'm going to go with Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell & Faith Erin Hicks. I really enjoyed this graphic novel, but there  wasn't much to it beyond just messing around. It was definitely super cute and fluffy, though.

2. Turkey - What book made you want to fall asleep?

I have to say, any of the books I read for class this year made me want to fall asleep. Outside of those, Lord of Shadows really bored me for most of the book. There are a few others, but that one came to mind first. I will say that while it bored me, I still enjoyed it a little. It's definitely not my favorite Cassandra Clare book, though. You can find my review here

3. Gravy - What book makes the whole series worth reading?

Going off of the last question, Queen of Air and Darkness was a lot better than Lord of Shadows. I still think that Lady Midnight was the best of the series but this third one definitely restored my faith in the series and characters. From the beginning page it was already better than the second book. Plus, there was plenty of angst but also hope that really kept the book going. You can find my  full review here.

4. Stuffing - What book is stuffed full of action scenes?

I read a lot of high fantasy and other action-packed scenes. It was actually a bit difficult deciding what book to chose for this prompt. In the end, I've decided to go with The Girl the Sea Gave Back by Adrienne Young. There was action almost from page one and kept going throughout the book. Not only that, but I just really enjoyed this book. You can find my review here.

Wicked Saints (Something Dark and Holy, #1)5. Mashed Potatoes - What book looked good, and then wasn’t?

I didn't even have very high expectations going into Wicked Saints and yet it still majorly let me down. I thought it would be somewhat good but every time I look back on it I'm just reminded of how disappointing this book really was form me. Before I go off on a tangent, I'll just leave it with this book was not what I expected.

6. Cranberries - What book has the sweetest romance?

I obviously have to go with one of my favorite books of the year: Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. I'd been hearing a lot of hype about it leading up to the release and I knew that I had to read it. Everything about these characters was so sweet and pure and amazing. I already can't wait to reread this book in the future! You can find my full review here.

7. Corn - What’s the corniest book you’ve ever read?

I decided to go with Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey. I don't know if I would say that this is the corniest book I've ever read but it was approaching that feeling. This was kind of a stereotypical fluffy and steamy novel. However, it was really fun and enjoyable nonetheless.

8. Green beans - What book is too long and needs to be shortened?

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor definitely fits this bill for me. It wasn't necessarily a bad book but it was over 500 pages and I could probably count how many big things happened on a single hand. It's a compelling story idea but the book was so long and unnecessarily so. You can find my review here.

9. Pumpkin Pie - What book do you read to get out of a reading slump?

The one series that never fails to get me out of a reading slump is The Veil Diaries by B.L. Brunnemer. These characters are some of my favorites and the writing is so easy to just fall into. I could read all 7 of the books that are out so far in a week if I let myself. I just love these books and they never fail to get me into a reading mood.

Image result for stuffing10. Dog/Cat - What’s your favorite Thanksgiving food that you would steal from the table?

It would have to be my grandma's stuffing for sure. She has her own secret recipe and it's my favorite food to eat at Thanksgiving meals. I always have about a million scoops of it because I just can't help  myself when it comes to how yummy it is.

Thanks for reading!
