January 2023 Wrap-Up + Haul

January was a wild month and start to the new year. I didn't get much reading done, but so much changed in the span of this month from December. It honestly feels like Christmas was light years ago. In January, we continued our flat hunt, found a new flat, and moved in all in the span of just a couple weeks. I got my next VISA to stay here. I transitioned to full time work at my job. And I graduated with my Master's degree, which my mom came to see and we made a long weekend out of it. All in, January was a busy month and I still don't feel particularly caught up on life.

I read four books in January. I expected to read more but with the stress of moving and the exhaustion of working 10-hour shifts multiple days in a row on my feet just made it so when I was home it was for sleeping and eating but not much else. I enjoyed all of the books I read this month as well, even if there weren't many. Mostly, though, I'm looking forward to February being a month of getting settled in our new place and reading a lot more books.

I only hauled two books (and one was free!) in January which is why I decided to include them in this post rather than make an entire blog post out of them. I'm pretty excited about both of these so let's go ahead and just dive right in!

The first one I got was Cruel Illusions by Margie Fuston. This was the December book pick for the Fairyloot YA box (unboxing coming soon!) and I think it's such a gorgeous edition. It has an exclusive cover, digitally sprayed edges, artwork, and so much more. I believe it's also a standalone? I'm not sure on that one, though. What I do know is there's apparently vampires and I'm all for it. Hopefully I'll get to this one this year, maybe around Halloween time?

The second book I got was a signed ARC of The Ever Storms by Amanda Foody which I won in a giveaway. I love Amanda Foody's books and her middle grade series is no different. The Ever Storms is the third book in it following The Accidental Apprentice and The Weeping Tide. The best way I can describe the first book is wholesome, cottagecore-vibes, and Pokemon meets How to Train Your Dragon. I'm so excited to have won this copy and already have a series binge-read planned now that it's been released.

Thanks for reading!
xoxo

15 Bingeable Book Recommendations (& Free Reading Resources)

Hello all! Wherever you are, whether it be sequestered at home or working an essential job, I hope you are doing okay during the current state of the world. If you're like me, you've been stuck at home for a while now (one month exactly for me!) and have started to grow bored of different things. I personally have way too much homework but I also have a lot of extra time on my hands. I also thought that since some people might have a lot of extra reading time on their hands, I thought I would recommend some bingeable books!

I have tried to make this a list of books varying by genre and age range. Additionally, I thought I would provide a few resources to help you all read during this time. I will start this post by recommending the books but all information and resources will be discussed and linked down below!

The City of Brass (The Daevabad Trilogy, #1)4. The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty
Adult Historical Fantasy

Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trade she uses to get by—palm readings, zars, healings—are all tricks, sleights of hand, learned skills; a means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles.

But when Nahri accidentally summons an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to accept that the magical world she thought only existed in childhood stories is real. For the warrior tells her a new tale: across hot, windswept sands teeming with creatures of fire, and rivers where the mythical marid sleep; past ruins of once-magnificent human metropolises, and mountains where the circling hawks are not what they seem, lies Daevabad, the legendary city of brass, a city to which Nahri is irrevocably bound.

In that city, behind gilded brass walls laced with enchantments, behind the six gates of the six djinn tribes, old resentments are simmering. And when Nahri decides to enter this world, she learns that true power is fierce and brutal. That magic cannot shield her from the dangerous web of court politics. That even the cleverest of schemes can have deadly consequences.

After all, there is a reason they say be careful what you wish for...

Reading Resources

I am now going to get into some of the resources and tips for reading and book-buying during this time. There's information not only on how you can support the book industry at this time, but also how you can read and listen to books for free in what is no doubt a financially unstable time for many.

To start, if you have the extra funds to purchase physical books at this time, a lot of independent bookstores are struggling during this pandemic and could really use support. Many bookshops that I follow are offering online orders with free shipping, curbside pickup, or other options to still support them such as purchasing a gift card to use later or by preordering upcoming releases. These options will vary by location, but if you can support your local indie it will help a lot against making sure they don't go out of business (for more information on why we need indie bookstores and larger bookstores such as Barnes & Noble, Indigo, and Waterstones, check out this article here).

There are three other ways you can help independent bookstores. The first is by ordering through Bookshop. It's similar to Amazon in pricing and ease of ordering, but most of the profits go to independent bookstores, authors, and publishers in a different way than Amazon orders. The other way you can help is by listening to audiobooks through Libro.fm. Most independent stores will have links specific to that store to get them commission so be sure to check if your store offers Libro.fm subscriptions. Lastly, you can donate to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation (BINC) which is providing assistance to booksellers not just during COVID-19 but all the time.

Scribd, one of the leading digital libraries out there, is offering 30-days free with no commitment during this pandemic (you don't even have to put in your credit card--just make an account and get free books). They have thousands of ebooks, audiobooks, magazines, and more. There are even some of the books on this list available there!

Audible is also hundreds of audiobooks available to stream for free right now at this link. There are audiobooks for all ages and across multiple languages (especially awesome if you're trying to improve your multi-lingual skills). There's also a ton of amazing Kindle ebook deals everyday for bestselling books. You can check each day to see

Lastly, if you have a library card a lot of local libraries have digital collections full of ebooks and audiobooks. Not only that, but a lot of libraries also have music streaming services and learning options for younger kids. This varies by library, of course, but a lot of libraries have been hosting these collections for years and this is an easy way to show support to a local library during this time.

I hope that these recommendations and all the extra information has been, at the very least, interesting and helpful to you all. Books are a wonderful way to escape the real world and I think that is needed now more than ever.

Thanks for reading!
xoxo

Book Review: "Aurora Rising" by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

Title: Aurora Rising
Authors: Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
Series: "Aurora Cycle_01"
Genre: YA Sci-Fi/Fantasy
Page Length: 470 pages
Publication Date: May 7, 2019
Date Started: June 7, 2019
Date Finished: June 16, 2019
Rating: 4 // 5 stars
Goodreads

Honestly, I'm not 100% sure what to say about this book. I both liked it and felt a bit disappointed by it. I think for the most part, I enjoyed the book but there were definitely some factors that went into me not liking this as much as I'd hoped.

Before I get into the reasons I liked this book, I just want to talk a bit about how I was disappointed. I don't necessarily think it was the book itself that made me like it less. I went into this book with really high expectations, which I knew would probably hurt my reading but I couldn't exactly change my subconscious hope that this book would blow me away. Additionally, everyone is hyping up this book. People I have very similar reading tastes to talked about how much it blew them away. So I was expecting something along the lines of the brilliance of Illuminae. But I didn't really get that. Additionally, it took me a while to read this book because of personal life things and just stress in general. I don't think any of that helped and I wasn't connected to this story very much because it took me over a week to get through it.

I want to say that this is my preliminary thoughts on this book. Looking back on what was happening, I should have loved it. In terms of how this book, the characters, the story, etc and whatnot were written, it was done very well. But I was stressed and it took me so long to read this book that I didn't connect to the characters and was left feeling disappointed. So, these are my thoughts for now but I do plan on rereading this book before the second comes out so that I can (hopefully) have a better experience reading it.

But like I said, looking back on this book I think it was done very well. The plot, the logistics of the world, the pure creativity that must have gone into it--all were great. The characters were awesome but I do think that there were too many POV changes. We could have stuck with just 3 of them rather than everyone getting a POV but never in a consistent order or in equal amounts. What's the purpose of giving a character a POV when their chapters are less than a page long? But I did like the characters--especially Fin! His sass, his struggles, just him in general made me so happy.

Overall, I don't want to talk too much about this book just because I don't feel like I read it at the right time. I was so excited to read it, I was reading quickly, and I was enjoying it until I became stressed in my personal life and that severely inhibited my reading experience.

I am very much looking forward to rereading this book to see how things change--I've already forgotten a lot of it too because it took me so long to read. I also think this series has a lot of potential and I'm definitely excited to see where the story goes with how things were left at the end of this book.

Thanks for reading!

Top 5 Wednesday: Books You Thought You'd Hate But Ended Up Loving

Another Wednesday is upon us! This week's Top 5 Wednesday prompt is all about those books you thought you were going to hate but ended up loving. Since I don't really read books that I think I'm going to hate, I'm going to be talking about some books that I was apprehensive or nervous going into--whether it be because it was outside of my genre, the hype was large, or I'd heard mixed things--but ended up loving!

So first we have All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque. This is a book focused around World War I that I had to read for a class my freshman year of college. I already wasn't looking forward to it at all because, really, who likes summer homework? Plus, it was outside of the genres I usually read. However, I ended up actually really liking it--I even cried a few times. It's one of the few books that I've kept from freshman year just from the sheer amount of feels I had while reading it.

Next I chose Caraval by Stephanie Garber. I didn't go into this book thinking I would hate it, but I wasn't sure if I was going to love it as much as the hype suggested. When I finally read it, I ended up being blown away by the brilliance of it and how the story wove together. While this series isn't at the top of my favorites list, I still really enjoy it and I can't wait to read the final book in May!

Next I chose Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. Going along with the same thing as Caraval, I didn't expect to hate this book but I was a tad apprehensive going in because I didn't usually read science fiction and the format of the book was scary at the time. However, I read through it so quickly and it became one of my favorite books of all time! I ended up reading it three times that spring and I still think about it all the time.

Up next I decided to go with Hide and Seek Her by H.B. Stumbo. Yes, I was excited to read this book when I got it, but up until that point, I hadn't read much outside of fantasy and paranormal books. Of course, if you've been following this blog or my instagram for a while, I talk about this book a lot. It's one of my favorites and I cannot wait to reread it this year in preparation for the final books!

And, lastly, we have The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty. I definitely had apprehensions going into this book. So many people I knew absolutely loved it and would hype it up all of the time. It was also an adult fantasy and a lot of the adult fantasies I'd read before had let me down. Of course, none of that mattered since I fell absolutely in love with this trilogy! I think about it on the daily and I already am super excited to reread the books in preparation for the final book next winter!

Thanks for reading!

My Favorite Books of 2018!

It's insane that 2018 is already finished. I was so looking forward to this year and all of the amazing releases and to think that it's over and I'm looking towards 2019 now is just insane. I read so many wonderful books, found new favorites, and reread some old favorites. I read 100 books in 2018, but I narrowed my favorites list down to my top ten! For this list, I decided to group books of a series together or else there could have been books from the same series taking up half of the list. I also excluded rereads from this list, even if I loved revisiting the stories.

It was actually really hard to rank these after I got past my number one, so while they are ranked numerically, most of them could be interchanged at some point! So, without further ado, here are my top ten books and series from 2018!

At number ten, we have Seafire by Natalie C. Parker. This wasn't really a book I knew much about until about a month or so prior to its release when I was able to get an e-arc of it. Let me just say, this book took me by surprise! I fell deep in love with the story and characters from page one and I ended up binge-reading it in a day. I cannot wait for the second book coming out hopefully next year! You can find my full, spoiler-free review of this book here :)

At number nine, we have the most recent and final releases in the Curse of the Gods series, Strength  (book 4) and Pain (book 5) by Jaymin Eve & Jane Washington. This is one of my favorite RH series and I just loved how the story wrapped up. I wish I could get more of these characters but I'm also happy with how the authors wrapped the plot and conflict up. For my non-spoiler review of book 4, go here, and for my non-spoiler review of book 5, go here

For number eight, I decided upon Obsidio by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. This was the incredible finale to the Illuminae Files trilogy. This is one of my favorite sci-fi series that I've ever read and it's so bittersweet to see it come to an end. This book also really, really scared me. Although, I did accidentally (and stupidly) spoil a part of it for myself so one of the big plot twists wasn't as impactful for me. For my full, non-spoiler review, go here

Coming in at number seven, we have Furyborn by Claire Legrand. I was really anticipating Furyborn and it ended up being such an amazing read. I already cannot wait to reread it and see what I've forgotten or missed on the first time around. It was such a surprising fantasy read and I cannot wait for the sequel in 2019! For my full, non-spoiler review, go here :)

At number six, I chose Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young. It feels like I read this forever ago since I was lucky enough to get an advanced reader's copy, but this book has stuck with me all year. Whenever I see someone mention it, I get so excited. And while this book seems to stay in the back of my brain, when I was going through what I'd read this year, this one popped right out as one of my favorites. It was a surprising and fun, short fantasy that really hit its mark. You can find my full, non-spoiler book review here!

At number five, in a last minute read, we have Internment by Samira Ahmed. I just finished this book moments ago and I knew I had to adjust my favorites list to include this one. This book was hard. It was so hard to read. It was so much more real to life than anything else I read this year. I am heartbroken, I am angered, I am inspired. This book challenges you to read the horrors that have occurred in our [America's] past and no doubt are occurring right now in our very country and then do something about it. I am not the same as when I went into this book. Review here

For number four, I went with Truthwitch by Susan Dennard. This was a last-minute read of 2018 and I absolutely loved it. The more and more I think about this book, the more I just want to escape back into this world and these characters. I cannot believe it took me so long to finally read this book yet I'm so glad I finally did! You can find my spoiler free review here :)

At number three, we have all three books in the To All The Boys I've Loved Before trilogy by Jenny Han, which includes the first book by that same name, P.S. I Still Love You, and Always and Forever, Lara Jean. I can't decide if I like the first or second book the most, but all three were so cute and binge-able. I ended up falling in love with this trilogy and the movie back in August and I'm so glad to have finally read it, even though I'm questioning why I waited so long to read them! You can find here my non-spoiler reviews of book one, book two, and book three

For number two, we have A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J. Maas. I think the reason I enjoyed this book so much more than a lot of people did was that I went into this book expecting it to be exactly how it was. I expected it to be a short, holiday-themed story where nothing happened except the characters all being together. In fact, more things happened than what I expected. But I just found this a cute, fun little read that was a great bridge book between ACOWAR and the next book coming out! You can find my non-spoiler review here.

And finally, at the top spot of number one, is Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas, a pick that no-doubt surprises no one. This was the final novel in my favorite series that released this year and it was such an amazing ending, in my opinion. Do I think there were things that could have been done differently to make it better? Yes. But did I absolutely love it and think that it was an amazing end to the series? Also yes. I'm still working on compiling my spoiler discussion of this book, but you can find my non-spoiler review here!

Well, there you have it! The top 10 books I read in 2018. I can only hope that 2019 brings as great of a reading year as 2018 did. These last few months especially have been excellent reading months and I cannot wait to see how these upcoming ones go!

Let's Talk: "Obsidio" by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff Book Review!

Title: Obsidio
Authors: Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
Series: "Illuminae_Files_03"
Genre: YA Science Fiction
Page Length: 615 pages
Publication Date: March 13, 2018
Date Started: May 26, 2018
Date Finished: July 17, 2018
Rating: 5/5 amazing stars!

Don’t let the amount of time it took me to read this book fool you: it was awesome! Every summer for the past three years, I’ve fallen into severe reading slumps where I read maybe 5 books over the course of three months. It’s just hard for me to read. But that is the only reason that it took me so long to read this book!

It was fast-paced and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time I read it! Especially the last 200 pages…I couldn’t stop and then all of a sudden I had finished it!

What I loved most about this book was seeing the development that each of these characters had undergone from the first and second books to this one! I can see the character arcs that Jay and Amie wrote and I’m in awe! I just love each and every one of these flawed, beautiful characters so much.

I thought that it had the right mix of action and suspense and romance. The pacing was perfect and the points of view were on point (haha, see what I did there?). Overall, this book was just so well executed.

That’s all I can really say without spoiling it but I will leave you with these final thoughts: I thought that Obsidio was a fantastic finale to this trilogy. I’ve been reading this story for three and a half years now and I can’t believe that it’s over. I’ve had so many awesome memories because of this trilogy: I’ve made friends, gone to signings, met the amazing authors, and so much more all thanks to this trilogy! It’s heartbreaking to be finished with it but it’s an extremely amazing feeling to finally know how all of my favorite characters end up! I can’t wait to reread this book because whenever I’ve reread an Illuminae Files book, I’ve always ended up loving it even more than the first time around.

I highly, highly recommend this trilogy…especially the audiobooks! I think my next read through with definitely be 100% from the audiobooks because they really are masterpieces in themselves!

Thanks for reading!

Top 5 Wednesday: Favorite Villains

Hello all! I know that I didn't post a Top 5 Wednesday last week and I apologize...I totally forgot about it until it was already Thursday. I had an excuse though: it was the day after I moved home from college and I had a lot to do (such as unpack all of my books and sort my bookshelves). However, I'm back this week with a super exciting Top 5! As I stated in my last T5W, this month we all got to pick our topics in part of a T5W rewind. This week I decided to go with Favorite Villains.

I am super excited for this one because I just love to hate so many characters. I mean, they're definitely bad people, but I just love reading about them! This is definitely different than the antagonists that I hate with a burning passion, though. Let's go ahead and jump right in!

Number 5 is Seraph's stalker from the Seraph Black series. I know their identity and I know the entire storyline from the very beginning to the end of the series, but I also don't want to spoil anything about who it is because it is somewhat of a big reveal. At the base, in the first book, they are Seraph's stalker. Throughout the books, we see inside their mind and inside their motivations, as well as into their past. It was really quite compelling.

Coming in at number 4 we have Loki from a whole plethora of Marvel movies and comics. I just really love Loki, okay. He was always such a fun villain to watch and I always smile when I see him in a movie. Tom Hiddleston also does an excellent portrayal and I couldn't be happier.

At number 3, I chose Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker from the Star Wars movies. I think he's definitely one of my favorites because we see his growth from a little boy into Darth Vader. I also love that, while he was a part of the dark side, he chose a path of good eventually, even if it was only minutes before his death.

For number 2, I decided to pick Voldemort from any of the Harry Potter movies. I feel like this list wouldn't be complete without him. He really was the first "villain" that I truly encountered because I read HP so long ago. I think that he's on this list mostly because we saw his backstory and his growth into Voldemort, and I always find it fun to see how a villain became who they are.

And finally, at number 1, we have AIDAN from The Illuminae Files trilogy. Of course, AIDAN borders right on the line between villain and good guy, but he has definitely done some villainous things. It's hard to truly judge AIDAN, though, because he was programmed the think the way he does. Still, I loved his character in Illuminae and I can't wait to see him in Obsidio

Well, there you have it. Those are my top 5 villains that I love! I left off some villains that I just absolutely loathe, such as Maeve, Umbridge, Amarantha, and those of the like, simply because I don't even love to hate them. I just hate them outright. Overall, this was fun to do and I'm excited for the topic that I have picked out for next week!
