Disappointing Books of 2020

Well, we're at the end of 2020. It's been a long year yet somehow this ending snuck up on me. I'm just glad it's over. Anyway, I'm not here to talk about my general feelings about 2020 but, rather, to dive into the first of my yearly wrap-up posts. Every year I do a few fun posts to wrap up my reading year and this year was definitely an interesting one.

Today I'm going to be chatting about my disappointing reads of 2020, but I feel like I need to give a bit of an explanation and disclaimer first. Just because these books are on this list does not mean I didn't like or enjoy them. Also, I am not trying to throw shade at any of these authors or people who like these books because, again, I did enjoy some of these. However, the books on this list are here because I had high or different expectations for the book and ended up disappointed. Let's go ahead and dive in!

The first on this list is actually the only one that I didn't like at all. In fact, I'd go as far to say that I hated it. I've mentioned this book multiple times over the year since I read it at the beginning of isolation but I just...it wasn't good. The book I'm talking about is Crave by Tracy Wolff. I had such high expectations for this book. It seemed right up my alley and I had heard nothing but positive reviews. And then I read it. And hated it. I won't get super in depth here because I have a non-spoiler rant review here but I just was severely disappointed and didn't like this book at all.

The next book is Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer. I feel like this might be a bit of a cop-out add since I technically haven't finished it yet but I think that fact warrants addition to this list on its own. I have been a die-hard Twilight fan since I was nine. I started Midnight Sun the day it came out. And I still haven't finished it. I'm over halfway and have been struggling. I'll have more thoughts once I finally finish but, for now, it's been mostly disappointing so far despite some new content I've enjoyed.

The third book I have is Losers Reap Her by Hayley Stumbo. This is the long-awaited final book in one of my favorite adult trilogies and I was so excited to finally get to reading it. I will admit that I probably hyped it up way to much in my mind and added unnecessary expectations to it. However, I also feel like this book was way different from the first two. Part of the reason I loved the trilogy so much was because I loved our main narrator, and when the POVs changed in this final book I felt a tad disconnected. Also, the ending was one of my least-favorite tropes of all time so that also didn't help. I won't say that I didn't like this book, because I did. I enjoyed finding the resolution to a trilogy I've loved for so long. However, i was a bit disappointed in it not matching my expectations.

The last book on this list is Blood & Honey by Shelby Mahurin. This one hurts probably the most out of every book on this list. The first book, Serpent & Dove, was my number one favorite book of 2019. It still remains one of my top books of all time. I was incredibly excited for the sequel. However, I felt like it let me down. I did try to make my expectations realistic in that a lot of the things I loved about the first book couldn't be replicated. However, it felt like this book dragged a bit and I was quite frustrated by many of the characters throughout a lot of the book. I do think this is a case of second-book syndrome, especially considering this was originally a duology that got stretched to a trilogy. I am still quite excited for the third book, Gods & Monsters, and I did give this book 4 stars, but it didn't live up to the first book or the early hype I'd been reading and, for that, I was disappointed.

Thankfully, those were the only books I had for this list! There were books that I rated low this year but a lot of those were also ones that I wasn't highly anticipating so they didn't really disappoint me, per se. Hopefully next year I won't even need to do this post!

What books disappointed you this year? Let me know in the comments!

Thanks for reading!
xoxo

Disappointing Reads of 2019

Oh boy here we go with a controversial post...my disappointing reads of 2019. I read a lot of books in 2019 and enjoyed a lot of them...but there were also some that I didn't enjoy as much as I thought I would. And today we're going to discuss them.

Let me preface this post by saying that I don't necessarily hate these books, just that I think they fell flat in comparison to my personal expectations or the hype surrounding them. Some of these I even rated pretty high. However, all of these books were very hyped up in the bookish community and all of them fell flat for me.

There are only four on this list, which I'd say is a pretty good number since I read over 130 books in the course of 2019. However, some of them were some of my most anticipated reads which means that them being on this list is a bit sad for me.

Lord of Shadows (The Dark Artifices, #2)Up first: Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare. Oh my god this book was boring. I hate to say it, but it was boring. There were genuinely some really good moments, but the fact that this book was so long really did not help the story. What would have made it better for me, personally, was if it was a lot shorter and we got rid of a bunch of filler stuff so that those really good scenes were able to shine through. I will admit that I cried in this book, but it took until the ending for that to happen. This book was so hyped and Lady Midnight was so good...and I'm very sad I didn't like this one as much.

Wicked Saints (Something Dark and Holy, #1)
Next we have Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan. I was really excited going into this book and I'll admit to having high expectations that were severely let down. I almost DNF-ed this book, but since I'd been sent a copy to review I forced myself to finish it. At first, I was so in awe of the ending that I was like "alright that was a solid 3.5 or 4 stars." However, the more I thought back on it, especially now, the more I realized how much I actually disliked it and how much the ending did not make sense. I think if I were to re-rate it, I'd give it a 1 or 2 stars max. This is one instance of a book being on this list and me actually not liking it at all. I don't even care enough after the cliffhanger to even think about picking up the sequel.

Strange the Dreamer (Strange the Dreamer, #1)
Then I have Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor. It hurts me that this book is on this list because I did enjoy it, I do plan on reading the sequel, and I have the most beautiful edition of this book. But everyone and their mother was hyping this book up to the extreme. Everyone was acting as if it was the greatest thing ever. And while I found the characters likeable and the writing to be beautiful, I finished this book and was left feeling very underwhelmed. The one redeeming thing for me, though, is that the sequel can pick up right where this one left off and hopefully more things will actually happen.

Aurora Rising (The Aurora Cycle, #1)Lastly, I have another book that makes me very sad to put on this list: Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. I genuinely do not know why I didn't like this book as much as I'd hoped. Maybe the hype got to me. Still, every time I look back on this book and what happened, I feel as if I should have enjoyed it more. It's by two of my favorite authors, the characters were all interesting, the story was compelling, and it had a lot of my favorite things in it.  Yet, for some reason, I was disappointed. Maybe I was just in a reading slump at the time. I do plan on rereading it in anticipation of the sequel, so hopefully my feelings will change for the better when that happens.

So those were my disappointing reads of 2019. I did rate books lower than these, but most of those were books I wasn't thinking I'd love anyway so they didn't actually disappoint me. I'm hoping that 2020 is a year filled with amazing books where none of them disappoint me at all, but we'll see!

Thanks for reading!
xoxo

Top 5 Wednesday: Book Releases You Don't Care About

Today we're getting a bit controversial for Top 5 Wednesday and talking about hyped releases we don't care about! I have quite a few but the following are my top 5. I do want to go ahead and put a disclaimer and say that these are my opinions and I'm not trying to make others feel bad for anticipating different books than me. Additionally, there are a few on this list that I'm not anticipating simply because I haven't read the series or previous books. Let's go ahead and jump in!

At number five, we have Slayer by Kiersten White. I enjoyed Kiersten White's And I Darken and I am excited to continue on with that series, but for the time being I'm just not that excited about this book. It's set in the Buffy-universe and I've seen only a few episodes of Buffy and, thus, am not too excited about this release.

For number four, I chose Evermore by Sara Holland. Yes, I know this came out a couple weeks ago, but I've seen plenty of people still hyping the release. I think for me, I just wasn't interested in the first book and thus have no desire to read this sequel.

Coming in at number three, we have Defy Me by Tahereh Mafi. This is one that I'm not that excited about simply because I haven't read Shatter Me. I have the trilogy and I plan on reading it eventually, but until then it's hard to get excited about the fifth (?) book coming out.

At number two, we have King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo. So many people I know are super excited about this release and I think that's awesome. I know that one day I'll eventually read this book but at the time being, I've only read Six of Crows and I don't even know who Nikolai is. It's kind of hard to get excited about a book when you don't know who the characters are.

And lastly, the big number one release I don't care about is The Wicked King by Holly Black. My instagram exploded the other day with people posting about this book and I, frankly, am just waiting for the release buzz to die down so I don't have to continually see this book on my feed. It's no secret that I did not like The Cruel Prince and while I want to know what happens in TWK, I'm more likely to turn to spoilers/ask one of my friends who read it. I just had a lot of problems with The Cruel Prince based on personal experiences and it ended up being my most disappointing read of 2018.

Well, that's all for the upcoming and recent book releases that I don't care about. What are some books everyone seems to be excited for except you?

Thanks for reading!
xoxo
