January 2018 Book Haul!

Hello everyone! How are all of you beautiful peoples doing today? My book haul for this month is super exciting in my opinion. I got a lot of books that I've been wanting for a while as well as a surprise few. As a plus, I didn't buy 6 of the books listed below and I paid less than $40 for the remaining few. I ended with 10 physical books and 2 ebooks for this month, which I think is a good number.

(Pictured are the only books I brought to college that I got this month)
~~~
First things first, I got Uprooted by Naomi Novik from my local used bookstore.
I've been looking around online for a cheap hardcover of this book and I hadn't been able to find one, so I decided to go ahead and go to my local bookstore. Originally, I didn't think they had it but as I was on my way to checkout and I saw it sticking off a shelf. Of course I had to grab it and buy it the moment I saw it, especially considering it was only $9.
~
Secondly, I got an arc of Hexed by Michelle Krys, also from my local used bookstore.
I've seen this book around for a while and while I'm usually not ok with buying arcs, it was the only copy of this book they had at the store. So I ended up buying it. All I know about it is witches and high school, which is pretty much all I want to know going into this book.
~
My last book from that trip to the bookstore is Written in Red by Anne Bishop.
I've had this book on my wishlist for a while but I hadn't been able to find the hardcover online for a good price, so when I saw it at the bookstore, I snatched it up. I don't really know what it's about except for the fact that it's supposedly paranormal-esque.
~
The friend I went to the bookstore with was getting rid of a few books and gave me The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani.
I've heard great things about this book, mostly from Reagan at PeruseProject on YouTube. It's a middle grade about a school for good and a school for evil and two girls who end up going to the opposite schools than what they expected. I'm excited to dive into it.
~
The next day, my friend and I went to the bookstore again and she bought me a few books, the first being The Invasion of the Tearling by Erika Johansen.
I have the first one in this series on Kindle and I've heard nothing but amazing things. So when we saw it at the bookstore (2 copies, actually), we both got a copy. The cover is just absolutely stunning and I can't wait to get into these books.
~
The next book my friend got me was The Martian by Andy Weir.
I read this book a few years ago and I absolutely loved it, but I had borrowed it from the library. I've been wanting my own copy ever since so that I can reread it whenever I want, but it wasn't until this month that I finally got myself a copy. I can't wait to read it again.
~
Next she got me Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli.
She's been raving at me to read this book for so long and I've had my eye on it for a while, but I hadn't gotten myself a copy yet. I'm thrilled to have it in my hands and I can't wait to get to it very soon and then watch the movie.
~
The last book she got me was Grave Mercy by Robin Lafevers.
I've had this on my list for a couple years now and I'm so glad to finally have it on my shelf. It's a book about a girl being trained by nuns to be an assassin. It sounds amazing and, as fantasy is my favorite genre, I'm incredibly intrigued by it.
~
The next day I went and bought myself the Barnes & Noble edition of The Cruel Prince by Holly Black.
It's absolutely stunning. I'm so happy to have this special edition as I think it's even prettier than the regular one. I've heard nothing but amazing things and I'm so excited to read it. It's a fantasy about fae and that's pretty much my favorite thing ever.
~
The last book I got this month was an arc of Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young.
I've been dying to get my hands on an arc of this book for almost two months now and I'm thrilled that I finally found someone to trade it with on Twitter. It's about fantasy and vikings and a badass female protagonist and I'm beyond intrigued. I can't wait to get to it!
~~~

The first ebook I got was Found by B.L. Brunnemer.
This is the first in Brunnemer's new adult companion series to The Veil Diaries. I've read it already and, while I enjoyed it, it didn't quite meet my expectations. However, I'm still excited to move forward with this series.

~

The second and last ebook I got was Ryan's Bed by Tijan.
This was one of my more anticipated book of the month and 2018 and I'm so excited to have it in my hands. I'm currently reading it and it's honestly just heartbreaking so far. I can't wait to get even farther into it.

Let's Talk: "Found" by B.L. Brunnemer Book Review

Title: Found
Author: B.L. Brunnemer
Series: "Books of Stone" #1
Genre: New Adult Paranormal
Page Length: 311 pages
Publication Date: January 13, 2018
Date Started: January 22, 2018
Date Finished: January 27, 2018
Rating: 3.75/5 stars

Honestly, while I enjoyed this book, I was a bit let down. B.L. Brunnemer is one of my favorite authors but I felt like this book lacked something that her other series doesn't. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I was a little underwhelmed.

However, I did still enjoy this book. I thought that the mythology and different cultures for these different species that B.L. created were very interesting. I can't wait to dive even deeper into these cultures (hopefully) in future books. I also can't wait to see this cast of characters cross-over with the characters from The Veil Diaries. I'm very excited for that to happen, and there were already mentions of Lexie and her boys in this book.

My relationship with these characters is weird. I really loved the main character Evelyn, but Atticus I was iffy about most of the time. He was very hot and cold, so I'm still a bit unsure on my feelings for him. However, I adore Evelyn and the other gargoyles in the group. I also am excited to see more of Astrid in the next installment.

All in all, I thought the writing was great, but the book was different from my high expectations which I think is where I went wrong going into this book. I think that I'm going to keep my expectations for what might happen in the next one low so that I won't be waiting for something to happen the whole book and then realizing that it's never gonna happen. I am excited to see more of these characters and, as this book left off on somewhat of a cliffhanger, what happens next.

Thanks for reading!

Book Release: "Ryan's Bed" by Tijan

Hello everyone! I have an exciting new book release to share with you all! I've been anticipating this book for a while now, and I'm so excited that it's finally released and I have a digital copy in my hands! The book in question? Ryan's Bed by Tijan.

I crawled into Ryan Jensen's bed that first night by accident.

I barely knew him. I thought it was his sister's bed--her room. It took seconds to realize my error, and I should've left...

I didn't.
I didn't jump out.
I didn't get embarrassed.
I relaxed.
And that night, in that moment, it was the only thing I craved.

I asked to stay. He let me, and I slept.

The truth? I never wanted to leave his bed. If I could've stayed forever, I would have.
He became my sanctuary.

Because--four hours earlier--my twin sister killed herself.

Reading Nook Tour: Spring 2018!

Hey all! Glad to see you've all found your way back to my amazing blog! Today I have what I think is a pretty exciting post for you guys (and me, if I'm being honest). I'm going to be giving you a tour of my reading nook at college! I'll be going over the space I have, how I managed to fit a reading nook into a college dorm room, and how I decorated it as well as show you guys some of the books and bookish items I have!

The Tour
Overall view

Left: The left side of the nook. Right: The right side of the nook.

Left: Bookshelf. Middle: Reading Chair. Right: Trunk and booksleeve hanging.

Left: Second view of bookshelf + the decor next to it. Right: Overhead view to show off the lights.

The tapestry from Society 6.

The Space + How I Managed It
Obviously going into college, I had limited dorm space. I knew that I wanted to bring some of my favorite books and most anticipated books on my TBR with me, but the challenge was where to put them. I decided after getting the dimensions of my room off of the college website that I was going to bring my smallest bookshelf, but I needed to ensure that I'd have a space for it. That was when I decided to loft my bed.

Now my bed sits five or so feet in the air, leaving me with enough space to have a cute little area underneath. I decided to put my bookshelf underneath, and that was actually the first item I had there. My trunk followed. Everything else that is shown in the pictures/video above trickled in at various stages of the first two months of me being at college.

For me, the key to managing my limited space and being able to bring my bookshelf was lofting my bed. If I had not lofted my bed, I would not have had enough space for anything that I've put in my little peace corner. While my dorm room is larger than most, I still would not have had the option of bringing my bookshelf if I had not lofted my bed. Another plus to me lofting my bed is that I feel like not only does it make the room seem bigger, but I also have my bed out of the way. I feel like I have a living space down below and then I have a sleeping/relaxation space away from everything else.

How I Decorated
When I first started on my reading area, I only had my bookshelf and my trunk. Obviously books livened up the space a little bit, and throwing a patterned scarf over my trunk also helped, but it still wasn't amazing. My mom and step-dad went out on the same day that I moved in (while I was unpacking, actually) and bought me a reading chair. At that time, we had been discussing different reading chairs for months and still hadn't decided on one. They went to a few different stores and sent me pictures of each chair they came across, and I wasn't particularly sold on any of them. And then they sent me a picture of the chair that you can see above. I'd been wanting a papasan chair for years and so I immediately said yes. Within an hour they had bought it and I had it sitting next to my bookshelf.

I also knew that I wanted a tapestry to cover the exposed support bars, my charging cords, and the plain white wall behind all that. So I saved up my weekly allowance and purchased a tapestry from Society 6 that fits perfectly and looks amazing! I'd had my eye on this specific tapestry for a long time, before I even knew that I wanted one. It's gorgeous and I'm so happy to have it in my room. Sadly, I don't know where (or if) I'll be putting it in my room at home. It may just end up folded in a box until next year's move in.

I also brought in my bookshelf. That is the main thing I knew that I wanted to bring to college. Most people brought a cubed shelf for storage of food or something, but I knew that I wanted a bookshelf. I absolutely love it and it's the perfect size for my small collection of books that I brought with me. Plus, it's short enough that I can stack books on the top, but tall enough that you can see it over the top of the chair.

I wanted more lighting underneath than I had. Having the main lights in the room on offered some, but everything underneath the bed was still in shadow. So I decided to shop around online and found a 33-foot remote controlled fairy light. I strung it through the bars underneath my bed and plugged it in, and voila, cute and instant lighting.

I've had a few booksleeves for a while now and I wanted some place to display them rather than just have them sitting on a shelf or in a drawer. That's when I decided to hang them! Obviously when I'm using them, they're not hanging, but in college when I'm not traveling I don't require all of them at once. Therefore, I hung some string with clothespins attached and used that to hang my booksleeves. It's not perfect, but it helps block some white space that wasn't covered by the tapestry and it allows for me to have my booksleeves in a cute, accessible space.

Lastly, I had some boxes that I couldn't fit on my bookshelf, so I stacked them next to it. At first, it looked boring, but then I put my absolute favorite throw pillow on top and hung one of my scarves I use for bookstagram pictures behind it, and boom, instant cute.

My Geeky Touches

Now, obviously because I'm a huge nerd, a lot of my decorations are nerdy and go along with that theme. For instance, we have a Spider-Man build-a-bear sitting in my chair that my friend made me because of how much I love Spider-Man. My favorite throw pillow is A Court of Mist and Fury themed, and it rests on book subscription boxes that are full of bookstagram props. Also, proudly hanging my booksleeves is also a nerdy decorating moment of mine. I have 4, but I have 3 of them hanging on clothespins and the last one just propped beneath it. Of course, my bookshelf is also pretty enough to be a decoration, so I think that will be my last geeky touch that I'm going to talk about.

~~~
And feel free to drop a comment with any other post ideas that you'd like to see come to my humble little corner of the internet!
Let's Talk: "A Wild and Unremarkable Thing" Book Review
Title: A Wild and Unremarkable Thing
Author: Jen Castleberry
Genre: Fantasy
Publication Date: January 23, 2018
Date Started: January 6, 2018
Date Finished: January 15, 2018
Rating: 2/5 stars
Goodreads Review
*I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. It is important to note that problems I had with this book could have possibly been fixed upon publication*
I honestly thought I would love this book. I really really thought that I would. Unfortunately, that just wasn't the case. There were a lot of things I disliked that I just couldn't forget about despite the parts I did like. Reading this was rough. I had to force myself to read it most of the time, and I feel like that partly contributed to my dislike of the book. I'm going to start with the things I disliked, and then finish this review off on a high note with the things that I did enjoy in this book.
Firstly, I could not look past the writing. This book was written in third person present tense, and there was very little use of pronouns or compound sentences. It made the writing choppy and I felt very disconnected because of the way it was told. I felt detached from the characters and even by the end of the book I did not particularly care about the outcomes of any of the characters except for one, and even then I wouldn't have been too distraught if things had ended differently for that one specific character. I feel like if the writing style wasn't so different than what I'm used to, I could have enjoyed the book to more of its full potential. The writing style was almost poetic at first, but after the prologue I grew annoyed with how this book was written.
However, the writing style wasn't the only problems I had with this book. It contributed to my lack of connection to the characters, but I believe that even if the writing style had been a more familiar one, I would have still had problems forming attachments to the characters. From the beginning to the end, I only had a half-formed connection to a single character from the entire book, and as I stated above, I didn't fall in love with that character either.
I really disliked two of the main characters. I thought I would love them, but by the end, I didn't like them. Cody/Cayda was ok for most of the book but there were some moments where I was particularly annoyed by her. I didn't connect with her which made a lot of her thought processes seem annoying to me. Overall, she wasn't a terrible character and I neither hated nor liked her. I particularly disliked Wolf, however. He was ok in the first few chapters of his perspective, but I felt like towards the end of the book he got more and more annoying, especially at the very end. I didn't particularly care about how his character ended the book, except in that it helped another character's outcome. He was, frankly, an misogynistic asshole who really served no point in the story until the very last chapters.
The pacing messed with me a lot. It was extremely slow in the beginning. In fact, I had to force myself to get through 70% of the book before anything actually happened. We were building up for 70% about this epic adventure that was about to start, and that was over and done with within a few, half-formed chapters. The ending was abrupt and wrapped everything up for a somewhat happy ending, but it was unrealistic. It ended almost too perfectly, too fast. This book was slow at times and rushed at others. I felt that since these characters were on such an epic quest, this book could have been a bit longer in those parts and shorter in the others. For a novella, I understand that there needed to be a lot fit into a small book, but it could have been written and planned a lot better while still staying in the length parameters.
Now let's get into the things I liked. First things first, I liked Penn. I didn't love Penn, but I enjoyed him the most overall out of this book. There were a few things that were most likely supposed to be surprising about him, but I either saw them coming or it wasn't that imperative to the story. In the grand scheme of this book, he was my favorite character and I really liked how his specific storyline ended.
I also liked Fares and Tomas. Fares was ok by himself as a crown prince playboy, but when he met Tomas I liked their story together. It was short and I wish we'd gotten more on their specific story than some of the 70% hype-up at the beginning of the book. I want them to be together.
Overall this book wasn't terrible, but I had a lot of problems with it that I just couldn't look past. Of my entire reading experience, I only enjoyed maybe 5% of my entire time spent on this book. This was saddening for me as I really was excited for this book. Unfortunately, this just wasn't the book for me. I don't think that this book is a particularly terrible book, but I feel that with some more revisement, planning, and beta readers, it could have been a great story. The idea of this book is a good one, but I wish that it had been executed a little bit better.
Thanks for reading!
The Hamilton Book Tag!
Hello everyone! If you are like me, you love musicals. I have never met a musical that I didn't like, and even though I'm still new to the genre, there are a few musicals that I absolutely adore. The Newsies is phenomenal and my all time favorite, but I also love Hamilton. Created by Lin Manuel Miranda, it tells the story of Alexander Hamilton's life. It is amazing and just has some stunning musical numbers. That being said, when I found out there was a Hamilton Book Tag, I knew I had to do it! This book tag was created by Maureen Keavy over on BookTube. Without further ado, let's go ahead and jump right in!!
For this one, I'm definitely going to have to go with Narnia for this one. The books and movies are part of my childhood and I've loved them for many years. I love the idea of a magical world where animals can talk and magic exists.
There are so many of these, but I'm going to go with Mor from the A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas. While there is a lot of love for her, I feel like there could be even more. She has done so much for the Inner Circle and the story in general and I think she often gets overlooked for Feyre. Don't get me wrong, I adore Feyre, but I feel like Mor is vastly overshadowed by her.
Art by Charlie Bowater on Tumblr
I'm going to go with Paige Mahoney for this one. There were a couple different characters that I thought of when this prompt came up, but Paige ended up being the obvious choice in my mind. If you've read any of The Bone Season books, then you'd know that she goes after what believes in and doesn't give up until she's achieved it. I admire her so much. She's such a strong character and I think we could all aspire to be more like Paige.
Art by Meg Phail on Tumblr
Arobynn Hamel was the first character to come to mind. It's not that he's sassy all the time, but there's a few things that he's done that are particularly petty and sassy. That being said, I absolutely despise him, but he is pretty petty and sassy if you think about it.
There have been a lot of series that I marathoned, but I think my most proud marathon is The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. I bought the first book and read it in about a day and immediately bought the rest. I loved reading this series and hope to revisit it very soon.
My favorite book with multiple POVs is my favorite book in general: Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas. This book absolutely blew me away and I cannot express how much I love it and this series. I wish I had the final book in my hands, but alas, it is not so.
I can't say anything other than Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling. From the massive success and theme parks to the amazing world, characters, and life lessons, this book series will no doubt be remembered for many many years to come. There's simply nothing else that compares, no matter how hard it tries.
There are so many OTPs I could chose from, but I'll go with Percy and Annabeth from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series and all its spin-offs. I loved both of them and knew that they had to end up together or else I would go crazy. They're slow burn and so so cute!
Art by Taratjah on Tumblr
My favorite fight scene is definitely in Empire of Storms (spoiler ahead) when Aelin literally burned the Endovier overseer from inside out. It was so badass and I literally had to put the book down just to scream praises at Aelin and Sarah J. Maas.
I had to go with Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. I've loved this book series for over 10 years and, while I recognize that it has its problems that I didn't see when I was 8, I still love it. I know that it gets a lot of hate, which is why it's my guilty pleasure read. I'm never gonna stop loving it, though. It's a part of my nerdiness that is ingrained so deep that it's never coming out.
I could list series after series for this, but I'm going to go with Twilight again. I love the ending of the series, but I kind of want a continuation to see how the characters are faring after the events of Breaking Dawn. Plus, I feel like a book focusing on Reneesme would be fun.
There are, again, so many that I could chose but I have to go with my favorite: Dorian and Chaol from the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas. They would move heaven and earth for each other and I find that just so cute. Plus, they've been friends for so long that you can see the chemistry between them in every scene. I just adore them.
There are so many considering I didn't get back into reading until 2015-2016, but I'm going to go with The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon and Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes. Both of these series are awesome and so much fun, but I was so late to the party on these.
Fred Weasley. That's all I'm going to say on this one.
(Spoilers for The Dark Elements by Jennifer L. Armentrout) Probably when Roth was sucked into hell. It didn't end it forever as he came back, but it was still heartbreaking when it happened.
There are so many. Tower of Dawn, first and foremost, blew my mind with the foreshadowing that came to light and so many other reveals. The Mime Order gave me whiplash with all the twists. That one scene in Illuminae also kicked me in the face. But that's just to name a few.
Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed!
xoxo
Announcing My 2018 Read-A-Longs!
Hello everyone! This year, on top of having books of the month, I decided to do a few different read-a-longs leading up to different book releases! This year I have 3 read-a-longs planned so far that are spread out over a long enough period that everyone will have plenty of time. The 3 series that I'm planning on reading are Throne of Glass, A Court of Thorns and Roses, and Harry Potter. These aren't all going to be taking place over the same period of time so I, along with anyone who decides to join me, will have plenty of time to read all of these. I decided to announce this by telling everyone what books I'll be reading in each month.
January is going to be my month off where I don't read anything except my Book of the Month and regular TBR. This is to help me get readjusted to college and see how reading will fit into my schedule.
In February, I will be starting my ACOTAR read-a-long. We will be reading A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas.
In March, we will continue on and read The Assassin's Blade and A Court of Mist and Fury, again by Sarah J. Maas to continue on with the ACOTAR series reread and begin the TOG one.
In April, we have Throne of Glass and A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas to, again, continue on with the rereads. This will conclude the ACOTAR reread in preparation for the next book being published.
In May, we will read Crown of Midnight and A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J. Maas. This brings us to the end of the ACOTAR read-a-long with the newest release in the series.
In June, we will be reading Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling. We will be continuing the TOG read-a-long and starting the HP one.
In July, we will be reading Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling to continue each series' read-a-long.
In August, we will be reading Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas. We will also continue the HP read-a-long with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
In September, we will finish the TOG reread with Tower of Dawn. We shall also continue the HP read-a-long by reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
In October, we will start the final, untitled installment to the TOG series. We will also read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling.
In November, we will finish the TOG read-a-long with the final, untitled installment releasing at the end of October by Sarah J. Maas. We'll also read Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling.
And finally, in December, we shall finish the HP read-a-long and the year with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
I hope that you all will join me for these read-a-longs in whatever capacity that you can! Here's to a great reading year!
xoxo
Lauren
