Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag


Hey all! Today I'm finally doing a tag that I've been excited to do for months: the Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag. I've seen so many people doing these and I've loved watching/reading all of it so I'm especially excited for this post. This tag was created years ago and this is my first time actually doing it! 

So far in 2019 I've read 87 (!!) books. I'm still not quite sure how I've managed to do that but I can only hope that the second half of the year is going to be as good. I have read so many great books and I have so many books that I'm excited to get to so let's just dive in! (P.S. just so that things don't get too crowded, all of these questions pertain only to this year and exclude rereads. P.P.S. some of these I could have listed 10+ but I've limited all but the last question to 5 or less). 


1. Best Book You've Read 

This was so hard to narrow down BUT I have a few. I'm not going to go super in depth on any of these since there are more of them than some other questions, but in no particular order we have:
  • The City of Brass and The Kingdom of Copper by S.A. Chakraborty
  • Hunting Prince Dracula and Escaping From Houdini by Kerri Maniscalco
  • Bloodwitch by Susan Dennard
  • Kingsbane by Claire Legrand
I have so many other books I loved this year so far but these are the ones that are tied for top book of the year (so far). 


2. Best Sequel You've Read 

For this one I only have two, so I will be discussing them a bit but, again, not super in-depth. Also, I only picked books that were the second in a series even though I did read some books that were third, fourth, etc in a series. 

First up is Kingsbane by Claire Legrand. I was so highly anticipating this sequel that I was worried it wasn't going to live up to my expectations. It did. Everything got so much more intense in this book and the stakes were a lot higher. Additionally, that ending had me absolutely shook (and still does).

I also have The Kingdom of Copper by S.A. Chakraborty. I loved the first book so much and this book takes things to a whole new level. You care even more about the characters, the political intrigue and tensions are that much higher, and you're on the edge of your seat the whole time. 


3. New Release You Haven't Read but Want To

I have so many of these, so I've again narrowed it down to five. These are also only books I currently own and not all of the books I haven't yet bought but want to!
  • Storm and Fury by Jennifer L. Armentrout
  • Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston
  • Finale by Stephanie Garber
  • We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal
  • The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi

I'm actually currently reading one of these right now, but I'm not very far in yet so I still decided to count it for this question. 


4. Biggest Disappointment

I have three of these so I figured I would actually talk about them in this section. For two of these, I still enjoyed the book but it wasn't what I was expecting. For the last one, I just flat out did not like it.

First we have Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare. Now, I didn't hate this book but I also was expecting something so much better. After the amazingness that Lady Midnight was, this book just let me down so much. I can't even get into it too much without making this super long so...just...here's my review.

Second is Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff. Again, I still enjoyed this book but I also didn't think it lived up to my expectations, the hype, or the greatness that was the Illuminae Files. I also think that it might not have been the right time for me to read it as I was super stressed and basically forcing myself to get through it. You can find my full review here.

Lastly is Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan which I just genuinely did not like. I can see from a rational standpoint where the hype is coming from but I also don't understand how so many critical readers think that this book is so amazing and has nothing wrong (insert shame-faced emoji here). When I first finished it I thought it was pretty good but looking back over the past few months...I did not have a fun time reading it. I could go on a whole tangent as to why this book disappointed me.


5. Biggest Surprise

First I have Bloodwitch by Susan Dennard which surprised me in the sense that it took this series to another level that the first two books hadn't reached yet. Also, all the twists in the end were just BAM BAM BAM.

Second, I have Kingsbane by Claire Legrand due to that killer plot twist at the end of the book that I still cry over. I honestly didn't see it coming and that in and of itself was a big surprise this year. 


6. Favorite New Author

S.A. Chakraborty, hands down. I'm so excited that she's going to be releasing another series after the conclusion of the Daevabad Trilogy. 


7. Newest Fictional Crush

I don't really have one? I just don't crush very hard anymore and a lot of the characters I love are ones that I loved before this year. I think I crush hard in the moment but for crushes I constantly think about, I've noticed that it usually takes a few books for me to die-hard love them. 


8. Newest Favorite Character

Nahri from The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty. She's just so strong and amazing even though she's in such a terrible situation. I love her so much and we STAN. 


9. Book that Made You Cry

The short list?
  • Only A Breath Apart by Katie McGarry
  • Kingsbane by Claire Legrand
  • Bloodwitch by Susan Dennard
  • The Kingdom of Copper by S.A. Chakraborty
  • The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
Some of these were happy tears, some were sad tears, and a lot had a mix of both. There were others, but here are the books where I cried the most. 


10. Book that Made You Happy

Pretty much everything above but add Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey and so many other books. I read a lot of books that made me happy so far this year and I'm so glad about that fact.


11. Favorite Book to Movie Adaptation

I didn't see any. 


12. Favorite Review You've Written
I think the main reason I liked these were because I could just gush or put a lot of discussion into them. Also, I loved most of these books. 


13. Most Beautiful Book you Bought

To go with one that I haven't yet talked about: Storm and Fury by Jennifer L. Armentrout.


14. What do you need to read by the end of the year?

May 2019 Wrap-Up!


Hello all! Today I'm coming at you with my May wrap-up. May was a pretty good month for me but I still wish I'd been able to read more. I'm a little disappointed with how the last week and a half went because I only finished one book when I had the potential to finish so many more than that. Overall, I read 15 books which is less than last month but when I added up the page counts, the months were pretty equal. My June TBR is very ambitious as well so here's to hoping that I can get through a good chunk of it! Let's just dive straight in!


BOOKS READ
1.
Title: Entice
Author: Jessica Shirvington
Rating: 3.5 // 5 stars
Still just as addicting as the first book, though I will say that I think I enjoyed the first book more? One of my favorite characters got very little page time in this book and I think that's what drove my enjoyment down a little bit. But other than that I loved how the world, magic, etc all expanded in this book. Definitely interested in seeing what happens next!

Not a literary masterpiece or anything but super addicting and such a page-turner. Like with the first book, I read most of this in one sitting and loved all the drama, smut, and more. I definitely am excited for Ash's book because I feel like I got so much more of him in this one and I can't wait to know more. Also, freaking love Bethany. She's just perfect and pure and I want to wrap her in a blanket and keep her safe from everything.

This is pretty self-explanatory. I had to spend a day reviewing this manual and doing online coursework to prep for lifeguard recertification and I wanted it to count towards my Goodreads goal. Nothing special, just a manual on lifesaving.

Title: When to Fear the Living
Author: B.L. Brunnemer

Rereading this was so fun and also a tad heartbreaking just with the events in this book. I'm definitely super excited to continue my reread of this series and to finally get to reading the newest releases!

Title: Heartstopper
Author: Alice Oseman
Rating: 4 // 5 stars
This was honestly just so freaking cute. I read it so quickly and now I wish I'd savored it a bit more. Either way, it was cute and, since this is a prequel/companion to a different book, I'm super happy to know how the story ends even though there's more volumes coming. I definitely will be buying myself a copy and getting the next volume when it releases in July!

Title: Furyborn

While I loved reading Furyborn the first time around, I think I loved it even more the second time around. There's just something about rereading that makes you get a deeper understanding of the story. I'll also be honest, I forgot a lot of this book in the past year so I'm really glad to have revisited the story and refreshed myself before diving into the sequel.

You best bet I'm counting reading children's book to my niece as part of my Goodread's challenge. This was a fun, cute book and I actually really enjoyed it, especially the rhyming.

Rereading this was super fun just like the previous books. Things definitely get even deeper in this book after the events of book 3. I have to say that this is definitely one of my favorite books in the series and I'm definitely excited to reread the next one.

Rereading this was a lot of fun for me. I will say that I think I like book 1 better, but I also adored this book. So much happens in it both in terms of plot and character development. I honestly didn't remember most of this from when I read it the first time. I don't remember the third book at all, either, so I'm very excited to reread that one next month!

BLOG POSTS


TV/MOVIES

I also watched quite a bit this month. There were some movies and some TV thrown in there throughout the month. I enjoyed most of what I watched, though I will say that there was one movie that was just meh to me.

First, I watched Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. I thought Zac Efron did a great job in this movie and I could definitely see how Ted Bundy was able to trick so many people. I did wish there was more to it as I was a bit disappointed at the end. But overall, it did the job they all set out to do.

Next, I watched Papillon with my dad and it was meh. I just prefer movies where it's difficult for characters but there's still hopeful or bright moments. Seeing as this was based off a true story, it's not something that could have been changed but a lot of this was just too much for me.

Then I finished Season 6 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Gosh this show is just absolutely great. I thought the season finale was amazing and I can't wait for season 7. I love how this show can be so funny and short yet we still connect to the characters and get discussions on real-world issues happening right now.

And then I finally saw Avengers: Endgame. My heart. I liked this one so much more than Infinity War, which was just overwhelming in a lot of different ways for me. I could go on a long tangent as to why I liked Endgame more, but I'm still heartbroken over certain endings.

Lastly, I rewatched Season 1 of Bones. I'm partway through season 2 already and I just love being back with these characters. I spent half of 2018 watching this show and rewatching it feels like returning to something familiar. I just love these characters and the progression of this show.

Book Review: "Queen of Air and Darkness" by Cassandra Clare

The end of The Dark Artifices has arrived and just...wow. Before I dive into what will no doubt be a very long review, I just want to reiterate how much I enjoy this trilogy. It's such a good one, even if I struggled with Lord of Shadows and some of this installment.

How this review is going to work is that the first part will be spoiler free for those who haven't read ANY of the trilogy. The second part will be spoiler free for this installment only, but may include spoilers for Lady Midnight and Lord of Shadows. The third part will contain some spoilers for this book, but that part will be well marked beforehand. So, without further ado, let's dive into this review because I have many thoughts!


NON-SPOILER FOR ENTIRE TRILOGY

I will say that this wasn't my favorite book in the trilogy. That still falls to Lady Midnight, but I did enjoy this final book A LOT more than Lord of Shadows. Where Lord of Shadows seemed to fall flat for me, this book did not. I did have some issues with it that I will henceforth now discuss. 

The first issue I had was the first half of the book. While I can look at the events of the first half and think that they're good for the plot and they made sense for the most part, the first half of this book was such a drag for me. What I think the issue was is that, while I love frustration and angst and making characters work for their happiness, the first half was just too much of that. We started out on a very sad note and moved straight into one frustrating event after the other. I never wanted to punch a character as much as I did in the beginning, which is a good thing because it meant I cared. However, the first half was pretty much ALL frustration with nothing to lighten the mood. But when the second half came around, it was balanced a lot better which is why I loved the second half so much more than the first. 

Another thing that bothered me a lot in the beginning that continued from Lord of Shadows was the constant perspective shifts and the fact that every single character needed to have their own POV. I can appreciate multiple POVs and I enjoyed it, but I stand by my thinking that there doesn't have to be 6 perspective changes in a single chapter. The reason this annoyed me the most was because we would start a chapter and a new scene and then three pages later, when the scene wasn't even finished, we'd get pulled into another perspective and have to reorient ourselves. Then, three pages later we'd get tossed back into the original scene and have to reorient ourselves again. I think that was a big reason why I didn't enjoy the first half as much either. Also, not every character needed a POV. There were different storylines and things happening in different places, but not every character in each place needed a POV when they wouldn't get another one again. 

Those were my main issues with the book and the first half. This book is 900 pages long and if I look at the first half as it's own book I would have given it 3 stars whereas the second half I would have given 5 stars. Once I finally got to the second half, I loved it. 

In the second half, everything seemed to be moving at a lot more of a consistent pace. There weren't long drags between events and even the space between bigger events was filled by character development and relationships and stuff of that degree. 

I will say that I absolutely loved the ending for the most part, but I felt as if I was left with more questions than answers. I did think that some tensions built up throughout the first two books were resolved a bit too easily. The big climax at the end didn't feel as impactful as City of Heavenly Fire did, so I'm not sure how I feel about this as a big conclusion especially since there were a lot of unanswered questions still. I know that we're going to be getting The Wicked Powers, which I'm super excited about, but I'm pretty sure we have to get through The Eldest Curses and The Last Hours before we get TWP. It might be a few years until we get to know what happens next. 

Overall, for my non-spoiler thoughts, I enjoyed this book a lot more than Lord of Shadows but not quite as much as Lady Midnight. Looking back, even the first half of this book is starting to grow on me even if in the moment I didn't enjoy it as much. Another thing that could have impacted my reading of it was the fact that I started reading it right before finals week began and I was working 40+ hours during it. Still, I enjoyed it and I'm excited to see what happens next to all my characters! 


NON-SPOILER FOR QUEEN OF AIR AND DARKNESS 
-may contain spoilers for Lady Midnight and Lord of Shadows-

Like I said, this section may have some spoilers for Lady Midnight and Lord of Shadows, but will continue to be spoiler free for Queen of Air and Darkness. I just had a few thoughts that might contain some major and minor spoilers for the previous books, so I thought I'd put them in a separate sections.

Mostly I want to talk about the characters. We had a lot of character growth in this book for all the characters. I'm really interested in seeing how they grow even more within The Wicked Powers. Of course, some of the characters annoyed me at times, but there was still growth.

I think the main thing for me is that the Ty and Kit dynamic felt different because of Livvy's death. I didn't enjoy their POVs as much anymore because it just felt so different and they didn't seem to be connecting very well with each other either.

I absolutely loved Kieran and Mark and Cristina. They were one of my favorite parts of this book and I honestly just want an entire book about just them. Like an entire book about them before, during, and after TDA. I feel like I know so much about these characters but there's still so much I don't know at all.

Lastly, character-wise, I absolutely loved the fact there were characters from The Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments in this series, and specifically in this book. Jace was just absolutely hilarious and I don't remember him being this funny in The Mortal Instruments.


POTENTIAL SPOILERS FOR ALL THREE BOOKS

Okay I'm definitely going to be getting into some spoilers here. So if you haven't read Queen of Air and Darkness or any of the previous two books, I would recommend clicking away now if you don't want spoilers.

The main thing I wanted to discuss here was how the whole parabatai curse thing was resolved. Even from when City of Bones came out, readers were told that parabatai could not be together. These three books explored that in more depth and all outcomes seemed pretty bleak for Julian and Emma. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy that it was resolved and everything turned out okay for them, but I feel as if it happened to easily (even if I'm glad that they killed Dearborn during their weird giant time). I just feel it was too out of the blue to happen so easily when the solution hadn't even been remotely considered throughout any of the books. Of course, I am glad they're together and are able to be without any fears now.

The next thing I wanted to gush over was Malec. Magnus and Alec have played pretty significant roles in Lord of Shadows and Queen of Air and Darkness and I absolutely loved getting to see more of them. I absolutely adored their wedding (it was the only time I cried in the whole book) and I cannot wait to go and read The Eldest Curses now. It's been 8 years since I first read the beginning of their relationship and it all culminated in this amazing moment. I'm just so happy with them, their story, etc.

Lastly, I want to gush over Kieran, Mark, and Cristina. I am SO happy that we have a poly relationship being represented in Young Adult media. I haven't personally read any in mainstream publishing, though I have read a lot of poly relationships in self-published books. The whole book I was just rooting for them to all end up happy and together, but I was so scared that one of them would get killed off or the relationship would be cut from the book. I honestly just love the fact that they are all together and I really want to read more about them in future books!


My overall thoughts are that this was a lot better than Lord of Shadows and I'm actually very happy with how everything turned out, even if the first half of this book took a while to get into! My faith in Cassandra Clare has been renewed and I am definitely interested in all the upcoming Shadowhunter novels.

Top 5 Wednesday: Spring Reads


Hey all! We're back with another Top 5 Wednesday and I'm super excited about this month's prompt: spring reads. Today is the first day of spring and, while it's cold and rainy where I live, I can only hope that the weather soon looks up! I cannot wait to sit outside and read, take walks to the beach, and just not be cold all the time. This week's prompt could be interpreted in many different ways but I decided to talk about the top 5 books that I want to read this spring! 

I have so many TBR books and books that I want to reread, but for now I'm just going to stick with the books that I haven't read yet! Being at college, my choices are limited but the books I do have with me are books that make up my immediate TBR and all of these choices today are from those! I did cheat a little bit and included books of the same series as one, but we'll just not talk about that! 

1. Strange the Dreamer & Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor

I have had Strange the Dreamer on my TBR since it came out. I was lucky enough to find a copy of the UK first edition with sprayed edges and I know that a book this beautiful has to have a beautiful story. A lot of my friends on bookstagram absolutely love this duology and I figured it's high time that I read it!


2. Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare

I finished Lord of Shadows in February and it was a bit of a let down but also a punch to the heart. Besides my packed monthly TBRs lately, I think another reason I haven't read this book yet is because I'm scared of what's going to happen to all of the characters I love. 

3. Hunting Prince Dracula & Escaping from Houdini by Kerri Maniscalco 

I have had HPD for almost two years now and EFH for almost a year and I haven't read either of them yet. The shame! I absolutely loved the first book in the series and since the final book is coming out in the fall, I know I want to be prepared for it. I just can't wait to revisit these characters and the story that I love so much!

4. Kingsbane by Claire Legrand 

Words cannot express how excited I am for Kingsbane to release in May. I loved Furyborn and I've heard that Kingsbane is even better so I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy! I'm hoping to get an arc of it for my personal collection but whether that happens before or after release date is up in the air. I just know my heart is going to be ripped out by this book but I am so excited for it nonetheless. 

5. Invictus by Ryan Graudin

I have had an arc of this book since May of 2017...almost two years...and I still haven't read it. I've brought it with me to college every semester with plans to read it but somehow it keeps getting pushed back. This book sounds like one that I'm going to enjoy but I think I've built up so much internal hype and expectation for it over the years that I'm subconsciously nervous that it won't live up to what I'm expecting. Still, it's time for me to finally read this since it sounds so amazing!

Let's Talk: "Lord of Shadows" by Cassandra Clare

*The first part of this review will be non-spoiler for both Lady Midnight and Lord of Shadows. After that, I will place a warning before I move into the non-spoiler review of Lord of Shadows that may contain spoilers for the first book*

*This review has been updated...the more I think back on this book, it was really a 3 star read and I was disappointed in a lot of it. I thought most of this book was slow and unnecessary, but I don't really wanna talk much more about it at this stage.*

ORIGINAL REVIEW...

DAMN

Okay, now that that's out of the way, we can get into talking about how good this book was. I enjoyed this book. I think my favorite thing about it wasn't the plot but the characters. For me, it doesn't matter how good a plot is if I can't connect with the characters. And I loved following the characters in this book!

Lady Midnight, for me, was and still is the best book I've read by Cassandra Clare. Despite it being only about 10 pages less than this one, I flew through it and read it in two days. I couldn't put it down and there was never a dull moment. But Lord of Shadows wasn't the same.

Despite how much I liked the characters and how much I cried, the fact of the matter is that there were a lot of times during this book that I was bored, thought the story was moving slow, or just wanted to be done. I don't think this book was as good as Lady Midnight but I am still loving how much of the character development we got to see.

One thing that I think hurt my reading experience was the fact that the perspective shifts so much. I'm completely fine with multiple POV books, and I quite enjoy reading them, but this was a bit much. What I'm talking specifically about was the fact that there were chapters where, in a single chapter, the perspective would shift back and forth every few pages. And it wasn't a shift between characters in the same scene, the whole scene perspective would shift. One second we'd be in one place with a set of characters and the next page we'd be miles and miles away with a different set of characters. I think the reason for this is to keep the reading wanting more because the perspective would shift after a "oh crap" moment. I just think that shifting the perspective 6 times in a single chapter was a bit much.

I can't really pick a favorite set of characters to read from, but I think it would probably be Kit, Ty, and Livvy. I just loved their adventures and they're all so smol and pure yet fierce and protective. I cannot wait to see more of these characters in the next one.

Another thing I absolutely loved was that, like Lady Midnight, there were cameos from TMI characters. I loved seeing that because it just ties the stories together well and gives us a glimpse at how those characters are doing after that series.

Overall, I'm a little scared for the next book. This one ended on a serious crap show (omg that ending) and I have no idea how the next book is going to go. Hopefully it ends with all my favorite characters happy, healthy, and living happily ever after.

Top 5 Wednesday: Top of My TBR


Hey all, it's Wednesday again which means it's time for another Top 5 Wednesday post! This week's prompt is the top 5 books on your TBR and it was a little difficult to decide which were my top 5 as my TBR is massive. I ended up cheating a bit and putting books of the same series together but here we are. I also limited it to the books I brought with me to college and didn't include any books I'm currently reading. Let's just dive straight in! 

At number five, we have Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor. I've heard so many people raving about this book and, honestly, I think that may be a reason why I haven't read it yet. I want it to live up to my expectations that it's going to be amazing and I'm scared that it won't. Either way, I'm still excited to read this book and I'm just trying to work through a stack of books for review before I get to this one.

For number four, I chose Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare. I love The Dart Artifices and I just finished Lord of Shadows recently and it tore my heart out. I know that this book will do the same but I'm excited nonetheless to read it. 

At number three is The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi. I'm a part of the street team for this book and all the promotions I've been doing for it have gotten me super excited to read it myself. It's set in Paris and deals with a heist and a gang of characters and that just sounds right up my alley. I'm hoping to get to this soon! 

For number two, I chose The City of Brass and The Kingdom of Copper by S.A. Chakraborty. I was kindly sent a copy of the second book by the publisher and I won a copy of the first in a giveaway, so not only am I excited to read these soon, but I also want to help promo this book as much as possible when I read it. 

And, lastly, at number one we have Sightwitch and Bloodwitch by Susan Dennard. I was lucky enough to get an arc of Bloodwitch and I've been making my way through the series. I have to read Sightwitch before it, though, so I'm hoping to read that one really soon so that I can dive back into this series with Bloodwitch!
