Favorite Books of 2024

The year of 2024 has finally come to an end. I can't say I'm sad to see it go. In a lot of ways, 2024 was better than the years before it. But just because it wasn't the worst year ever doesn't mean it was an amazing year.

My reading year was the biggest it has ever been. I read 51,808 pages across 133 books. My best reading year prior to that was in 2019 with 43,643 pages across 138 books. So while I read less books this year compared to 2019, my page count was a lot higher.

I read a lot of great books this year...and I also read a lot of middle-of-the-road books. I found my tastes tended towards books that were easy to fall into with addicting stories that felt familiar. I didn't branch out too much from romance, fantasy, or why choose.

The books I've chosen for this list, though, are truly the standout reads of the year. The ones I think back on frequently with fond memories. It was actually really hard to rank them over one another. For the sake of not having the list completely taken over by a single author, I have grouped series together into one listing. Additionally, I don't include rereads or fanfictions in my favorite reads of the year even though I did reread some amazing books and found some great fanfics in 2024.

Before I begin, I wanted to give some honorable mentions to a few books that didn't quite muscle out over the ones on this list but still were ones I enjoyed and consider new favorites. Yellowface by R.F. Kuang, The Teller of Small Fortunes by Julie Leong, and Lights Out by Navessa Allen were also addicting books I couldn't put down. But, without further ado, let's get into my top 10 books of 2024...

Coming in at the tenth spot, we have The Spellshop by Sarah Best Durst. This year had a lot of cozy reads and this is, by far, one of the coziest. I absolutely adored this fantasy book. It felt like a warm hug, like a nostalgic time in childhood that you can't quite grasp anymore, like comfort in the form of paper. The setting was vivid, the characters engaging, the story one I never wanted to leave. I am so excited to read more from this author as this was just...so perfect.

At number nine, we have Cherished by Emilia Emerson. While I loved the entire series this standalone book is set in, this one grabbed me even harder than the others. It's an addicting, multi-faceted story. I am a sucker for a why choose omegaverse and this one had all my favorite things. We had developed characters, plot outside of the romance, realistic conflicts and progression, and so much more. I can't wait to get a copy for my bookshelves the next time I go to read this one.

Number eight goes to Butcher & Blackbird by Brynne Weaver. When I tell you I was addicted to this from page one and couldn't put it down I mean it. It was funny but dark, gruesome but romantic...it was everything it had been raved about. I, personally, really enjoy a funny book that had dark themes. Two serial killers in competition with each other? Sign me up! I truly loved this book and am looking forward to rereading it in the future as well as diving into the last book in just a few weeks.

You can read my full, non-spoiler review here

Number seven is for The Blighted Stars by Megan E. O'Keefe. This book is an adult sci-fi space opera and it. was. so. good. This series has one of the most interesting concepts I've come across with insane implications. I was rooting for all of the characters and I just knew she was gonna break my heart. It was also surprisingly creepy and suspenseful at times. One of my main goals for 2025 is to continue with this trilogy because it's just so good.

For number six I have all of the Ali Hazelwood books I've read this year. This is a case where, even though they're not all in the same series, I didn't want the list to be taken up solely by Ali. I read five of her books this year: Bride, Love Theoretically, Check & Mate, Not In Love, and Love on the Brain. It was one of my goals to get through her backlist romances after reading The Love Hypothesis years ago but not keeping up with her releases. Let me tell you, Ali Hazelwood never misses. I loved every single one I read this year. While I would rank some higher than others, all of these were addicting, fun, enjoyable reads. I am majorly looking forward to everything Ali decides to write in the future, particularly Deep End which is coming out very soon.

My book review for Check & Mate can be found here

Number five goes to The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna. I had this book on my TBR for years but I got into a cycle of wanting to only read it during fall but then not reading it before fall was over...rinse and repeat. This year, I finally read it and it was everything to me. Cozy fantasy is definitely a genre I plan on reading more in because the ones I read this year were just phenomenal. Secret Society was perfection. Found family, cozy atmosphere, stakes just high enough to be invested, well-developed and nuanced characters, a budding romance...I adored it. I cannot wait to reread this in the future as well as pick up more books by this author.

Spot number four goes to His Tesoro by Emilia Rossi. This is a mafia romance from the same author as Cherished and it was phenomenal. I don't read a lot of mafia romance but the ones I do read I tend to really enjoy. This is by far my favorite mafia romance I've ever read and it fully cemented Emilia as one of my new auto-read authors. I just adored the main character and how the romance slowly blossomed into what it became. Truly one of my new all-time favorite books that I can't stop thinking about. I am very much looking forward to the standalone sequel that's coming in 2025 following a character we met in this one.

Number three goes to A Pack for Autumn by Emilia Emerson and A Pack for Winter by Eliana Lee, the first two books in the Cozyverse series. This is a cozy omegaverse world with books set in each season of the year. I read both of these when they came out and they were...delightful. I cannot describe how much I loved these books. I know that these will forever be seasonal reads for me. They're addicting, the spice is on point, and the setting is just perfection.

Number two is for the Pack Darling duet by Lola Rock. I read this not once but TWICE in 2024. It's a hate-to-love omegaverse duology with badass characters and an addicting storyline. I'm a sucker for romances where the characters have to work for it like in hate-to-love or enemies-to-lovers or arranged/forced proximity. This series does it so well and it truly has become a comfort series this year. I know I'll be rereading it often in the future.

You can find my full, non-spoiler review here

And my number one spot goes to Relever and Glisser by Jane Washington, books four and five in the Ironside Academy series. Jane is one of my auto-read authors and has been for almost ten years at this point. This series is an interesting take on the traditional omegaverse structure and I am absolutely obsessed (and have been). These two were recent releases I hadn't read yet and I found them to be just as addicting as the previous books. I particularly loved getting to develop one-on-one relationships between the main character and her love interests as well as seeing the stakes get a bit higher. Overall, just phenomenal and I am both scared and excited to see how the final book is going to go.

Thanks for reading!

Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag: 2024 Edition

It's already past the halfway point of the year (oh my god I'm having a crisis about that). This tag is one of my favorites to do every year around this point and it'll be rather interesting to look back at the year so far. I've read 74 books at the time of writing this tag (which is wild) and there's still a whole five and a half more months to go. There's been a lot of amazing books, a fair number of good but forgettable ones, and some real stinkers. And, of course, there's been a lot of rereads.

As a disclaimer, I try not to pick the same book for multiple prompts in this tag to make it more varied. I also don't include my rereads when factoring in favorites or feelings because it's just an unfair advantage to those books at that point. Let's go ahead and take a glimpse into the year so far...

1: BEST BOOK YOU'VE READ

This was really hard to choose. There have been some stellar new reads this year. I had to go with Pack Darling by Lola Rock, however. I read this duology in one day back in February. I immediately couldn't stop thinking about it and I actually then reread it in May. It has become a comfort series, mostly because of how much I love the characters and how well the story was written. I already am looking forward to rereading it again in the future. And, if you'd like to know more of my thoughts, you can find my original review here

2. BEST SEQUEL YOU'VE READ

I think, in the spirit of not mentioning the same books over and over, I'm going to go with Lore Olympus by Rachel Smythe for this one. To me, it seemed like this story got better and better with each volume. As you got to learn more about the characters, see the plot develop, and explore new relationships. It was fun and I binged the series so quickly (of what had been released at the time).

3. NEW RELEASE YOU HAVEN'T READ BUT WANT TO

There's a couple of them. There were some new releases that I was really excited for this year but my emotional state for the beginning of the year didn't lend itself to complex fantasy books. And now that I'm working two jobs, I'm quite busy and sometimes new releases tend to fall off in favor of mood reading whatever sounds best. For this, I think I'm most wanting to read Relever by Jane Washington sooner rather than later. This is the fourth book in the Ironside series with the fifth one releasing in December. It's a favorite series of mine and I'd been eagerly anticipating this release, but it just hasn't felt like the right mood to reread the series and continue on yet.

4. BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

Unfortunately this goes to House of Flame and Shadow by Sarah J. Maas. While I enjoyed parts of this book, I largely feel that it was one of her worst written books and often read more like fan service. I was really hoping it was going to cure the issues I had with the series after Sky and Breath but it actually just made them worse. Despite the parts I did enjoy, the longer I think about this book the more disappointed in it I am. You can read my initial review here

5. BIGGEST SURPRISE

We're going to have to go with Yellowface by R.F. Kuang for this one. The surprise isn't that I loved it, which I was expecting going in. The surprise is at just how dark and twisted this story got. From the way it was described to me, it was a satirical story that made fun of the publishing industry and called out the bad practices in it. And it was that, but the way most people discussed it was like it was a hilarious story with all of that. To me, it was a lot darker than I expected, which was the big surprise. However, I thought it was phenomenal and so well-done and I have not stopped recommending it to my family and friends since I finished it.

6. FAVORITE NEW AUTHOR

I'm going to go with Brynne Weaver for this one. I've read three of her books this year and enjoyed all of them, particularly Butcher & Blackbird and Leather & Lark. She writes serial killer romances and that's not a genre I've been a stranger to in the past. However, Butcher & Black took me by complete surprise because it's a romcom. I immediately was addicted and so excited for the sequel to follow it up (which was also stunning).

7. NEWEST FICTIONAL CRUSH

Alright so usually I don't get fictional crushes, which is something I've talked about in previous mid-year tags when I answer this question. However, I've been approaching romance reads in a new light this year and there are a few characters that have cracked me enough to be somewhat called a fictional crush. Mainly Eli Killgore.

This could partially be because I just finished Not In Love a few hours before writing this but also because this man is a SIMP. He is down bad for Rue in all the best ways. He cannot function properly when she's in the room, he cannot stop thinking about her, and he understands her on such a fundamental level that is rare to see. Truly amazing. Plus, the spice in this book was written so well to my taste and that doesn't hurt at all.

8. NEWEST FAVORITE CHARACTER

Okay I have to cheat a little bit because one of my newest favorite characters is Lilah from Pack Darling by Lola Rock. There's a reason I've already read the duology twice and a lot of it has to do with how much I love Lilah. I just couldn't help but fall for her and I truly think she's a fascinating, multi-dimensional character that goes on such an intriguing journey throughout the duology.

9. BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY

Ali Hazelwood is coming in again with Love, Theoretically. Now, I did cry *a lot* in this book but not for reasons you might think. This book wasn't sad or anything but what I mainly cried over was the open, honest communication and how beautiful the relationship was. I do believe it's mainly because I was firmly in my post-breakup feels but I could not stop crying over how beautiful these characters were together.

10. BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY

Okay can you sense a pattern? This one goes to Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood. I was giggling, kicking my feet, cackling out loud, and just having a jolly time reading this book. To me, it's one of Ali's most balanced books when it comes to plot, romance, social commentary, and secondary characters/plots. It felt so well-done and I have to admit I was fully obsessed with the characters and story. It was just amazing to read. And I fully believe this year has cemented to me that Ali Hazelwood is a new auto-buy author.

11. FAVORITE BOOK TO MOVIE ADAPTATION

Okay so this isn't a movie adaptation but, in my defense, a lot of adaptations recently just haven't been in my realm of interest. However, the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV show that began in December and ended in January is an amazing one! Of course, I do have *some* issues with it but it by far a faithful and well-done adaptation. I cannot wait to see what future seasons hold.

12. FAVORITE REVIEW YOU'VE WRITTEN

I recently (finally) posted my review for this book. As I previously mentioned, this is one of my favorites of the year so far. And I finally posted a review that I felt did it justice. Of course, I loved the book so it was excited to get to talk about it. You can find that review here

13. MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU'VE BOUGHT

I've actually been pretty good in terms of hauling books this year and keeping the number low. The most beautiful book has to go to Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcette. This is the gorgeous Fairyloot edition with stenciled edges, artwork, an exclusive cover, and is signed. It matches the first book which I got from Fairyloot a while back and they're just simply stunning together!

14. WHAT DO YOU NEED TO READ BY THE END OF THE YEAR?

There's a whole lot of these. My TBR is never-ending and I am always finding new ones to add to it. However, here's a list of a few of my top priorities for this year: the An Ember in the Ashes series, Red Rising, Love on the Brain, The Book of Azrael, Entwined, and A Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches

Thanks for reading!

Book Review: "Butcher & Blackbird" by Brynne Weaver

Title: Butcher & Blackbird
Author: Brynne Weaver
Series: "Ruinous Love" #1
Genre: Dark Romance Comedy
Page Length: 360 pages
Publication Date: August 15, 2023
Rating: 5 // 5 stars

As a fan of dark romances and a fan of rom-coms, I was quite eager going into Butcher & Blackbird. A dark romcom about a competition between serial killers? It sounded right up my alley, particularly after my enjoyment of the Mindf*ck series in 2022. Butcher & Blackbird lived up to my expectations and far surpassed them, giving me a new all-time favorite to add to my shelves.

In Butcher & Blackbird, we follow two serial killers who take out other killers. After a rather hilarious first encounter, they begin an annual murder competition that takes them across the country over the span of multiple years. And, of course, romance starts to bloom.

I loved both the main characters in this. In a romance book, good character building is essential to keep readers invested. After all, romance plots revolve mainly around rooting for two or more characters to get together. Brynne Weaver did a stellar job at making me fall for Sloane and Rowan. Between their witty banter, toe-curling flirtation, and surprising tenderness, I was ready to fall for these characters myself.

Apart from the characters, Weaver crafts an exciting adventure for us readers to go on with Sloane and Rowan. It takes a truly skillful writer to make murder into a hilarious endeavor but she truly succeeded with this story. From ruining cookies & cream ice cream to accidental cannibalism, the trials these characters endure on their quest to kill had me cackling out loud.

It's rather rare to have both an exciting plot and well-crafted characters in a story. However, Weaver managed to achieve that and more with Butcher & Blackbird. On top of that, the spicy scenes were stellar and well-balanced. I'm not someone who loves a lot of spice in books but Weaver managed to make the scenes both exciting and purposeful.

While I love Sloane and Rowan, we also got to meet a variety of side characters that we'll get to see featured in the future installments of the Ruinous Love trilogy following the Kane brothers and their romances. I am particularly excited to see how Lachlan and Lark get on in the next installment after their frosty demeanors towards each other during the rare moments they've been on page together.

All that being said, I'll leave you with this: Butcher & Blackbird is an addicting, hilariously gruesome story with a surprisingly touching romance that tugs at your heartstrings. It's not for the faint of heart and the trigger warnings should be taken as the warning they are, but if it hits your preferences, it will surely become a new top favorite.

Thanks for reading!

I only picked up three books in the month of February. I'm on a book buying restriction that's not a full ban but is a heavy restriction. Let's go ahead and just dive into the three that I did pick up...

The first is the Barnes & Noble edition of A Vicious Game by Melissa Blair. This is one of my most anticipated books of the year and I love the cover of the B&N edition. This is the third book in the Halfling Saga, the first of which was one of my all-time favorite reads of 2021. I'm thrilled to have the third book in my hands and I can't wait to binge the books all in one go.

The second book I picked up is Angel Unseen by J. Bree. I love all of J. Bree's books and this is the only one I haven't read yet. It's also getting a cover change in the next few months so I wanted to grab this since I still prefer this one. This is in the same Mounts Bay world as the Hannaford Prep series which is one of my all-time favorites. I'm excited to read this soon but I'm also saving it for when I need a new J. Bree book.

The last book I picked up was the Target edition of Bride by Ali Hazelwood. I've been really excited for this one and February has been my month for reading omegaverse books so it naturally tracked that I picked it up. I've also already read it in one sitting and loved it so much. It was addicting and fun and an easy read, which was exactly what I was needing.

Thanks for reading!
xoxo
