October 2024 Wrap-Up

This year has been flying by. I cannot believe we're into November already! October felt like it flew by and I was so busy I didn't get much into the Halloween spirit (shock, I know). However, I am fully embracing just the general autumn vibes and plan to until Thanksgiving.

I read 10 books in October with some rereads of past favorites and some new favorites discovered. I am feeling hopeful for November in regards to getting through some of my immediate TBR books as well as a couple releases I'm looking forward to. But before I put my sights to the new month, let's take a look at the past one.

Book Review: "Butcher & Blackbird" by Brynne Weaver

Title: Butcher & Blackbird
Author: Brynne Weaver
Series: "Ruinous Love" #1
Genre: Dark Romance Comedy
Page Length: 360 pages
Publication Date: August 15, 2023
Rating: 5 // 5 stars

As a fan of dark romances and a fan of rom-coms, I was quite eager going into Butcher & Blackbird. A dark romcom about a competition between serial killers? It sounded right up my alley, particularly after my enjoyment of the Mindf*ck series in 2022. Butcher & Blackbird lived up to my expectations and far surpassed them, giving me a new all-time favorite to add to my shelves.

In Butcher & Blackbird, we follow two serial killers who take out other killers. After a rather hilarious first encounter, they begin an annual murder competition that takes them across the country over the span of multiple years. And, of course, romance starts to bloom.

I loved both the main characters in this. In a romance book, good character building is essential to keep readers invested. After all, romance plots revolve mainly around rooting for two or more characters to get together. Brynne Weaver did a stellar job at making me fall for Sloane and Rowan. Between their witty banter, toe-curling flirtation, and surprising tenderness, I was ready to fall for these characters myself.

Apart from the characters, Weaver crafts an exciting adventure for us readers to go on with Sloane and Rowan. It takes a truly skillful writer to make murder into a hilarious endeavor but she truly succeeded with this story. From ruining cookies & cream ice cream to accidental cannibalism, the trials these characters endure on their quest to kill had me cackling out loud.

It's rather rare to have both an exciting plot and well-crafted characters in a story. However, Weaver managed to achieve that and more with Butcher & Blackbird. On top of that, the spicy scenes were stellar and well-balanced. I'm not someone who loves a lot of spice in books but Weaver managed to make the scenes both exciting and purposeful.

While I love Sloane and Rowan, we also got to meet a variety of side characters that we'll get to see featured in the future installments of the Ruinous Love trilogy following the Kane brothers and their romances. I am particularly excited to see how Lachlan and Lark get on in the next installment after their frosty demeanors towards each other during the rare moments they've been on page together.

All that being said, I'll leave you with this: Butcher & Blackbird is an addicting, hilariously gruesome story with a surprisingly touching romance that tugs at your heartstrings. It's not for the faint of heart and the trigger warnings should be taken as the warning they are, but if it hits your preferences, it will surely become a new top favorite.

Thanks for reading!

Review: "Pack Darling" Parts 1 & 2 by Lola Rock

Duology Title: Pack Darling
Author: Lola Rock
Genre: Adult Omegaverse Why Choose/RH
Individual Ratings:
  1. Part 1 - 5 // 5 stars
  2. Part 2 - 5 // 5 stars
Overall Rating: 5 // 5 stars

I have a new obsession and that obsession is miss Lilah Darling. Pack Darling is a duology that came to me at just the right time in my life when I needed something to fall into and completely get lost in. It helped me when I was low and I am so grateful to have found it when I needed it. Even apart from that, though, this duology is the best omegaverse I've ever read and one that I'm obsessed with and think about daily...enough to the point that I have already reread it.

So I'm fairly new to the omegaverse genre. I've only read a handful of them so far but I do have to say that this duology is the best yet. It has a mixture of some of my favorite tropes (enemies/rivals to lovers, slow burn, angst, hurt/comfort, why choose, found family, etc). The plot is exciting and engaging. But more than anything, the characters are developed and multi-faceted.

We've got a cast of six characters centered in this story: Lilah, Orion, Hunter, Finn, Jett, and Atlas. Sometimes, once the number of love interests go higher than three, it gets hard to differentiate between them and they no longer feel like their own person. That was not the case in this duology. Each character felt so unique and I could tell them apart on the page just by how they were narrating. That, for me, is the first test of great characters in a why-choose series.

The characters were also just fun. Finn, especially, is one of my favorites. He's psycho but in a fun, endearing way....a character you just love to read about because they're wild. Of course, Lilah is my absolute favorite though. She's gone on such a journey, has dealt with so much, and is just badass throughout it all. I could read a million more books about her and her little domestic adventures (or thrilling escapades). More than anything, this duology is about a group of characters going on a journey of healing and learning to trust in each other. I'm a sucker for a found family trope and this duology does it so well.

This duology won't be for everyone, but for me it was a perfect recipe of a lot of elements I love coming together into an addicting read. I've already read it twice in the span of four months and I anticipate rereading it many more times in the future.

Thanks for reading!

Book Review: "House of Flame and Shadow" by Sarah J. Maas

Title: House of Flame and Shadow
Author: Sarah J. Maas
Series: "Crescent City" #3
Page Length: 838 pages
Publication Date: January 30, 2024
Rating: 4 // 5 stars

*Non-spoiler for House of Flame and Shadow but it will contain major spoilers for previous books in the Crescent City series*

Okay y'all, we're about a month away from me having finished this book and I think I've settled my thoughts enough for a coherent review. I have a lot of complicated feelings about this book and how the series has progressed from the first book. I'll start by saying that objectively this is a 3-star book. But I do have a lot of love for the characters and world so I rated it 4-stars.

I'll start with my issues, of which there are plenty. First, Ithan and Tharion shared one single brain cell this entire book and it annoyed me to the point where I actively rolled my eyes seeing them on page. Ithan mostly got better but Tharion so far still annoys me. Bryce's characterization in this book also felt completely foreign to me. She didn't feel like the Bryce I'd known in the past two books. And, to be honest, there were times she annoyed me as well.

The plot was confusing and convoluted at times. The big climax of the series fell flat, the ending was rushed and anti-climactic, the stakes never felt high, and overall I was just confused. I think it read like poorly planned fanfiction.

Honestly, my favorite scenes were the ACOTAR crossover scenes, which shouldn't be the case. I should enjoy those scenes, but Crescent City should be able to stand on its own without needing the support of her most famous series. I think it would have been far more intriguing to see a world that stood on its own where the conflicts didn't tie into ACOTAR.

And, in probably one of my single biggest issues, the POV switches were absolutely insane. I don't mind multiple-POV books or switching POV's every chapter. But multiple POV switches in a single chapter felt like too much. We were getting POV switches after a single page sometimes. I can only imagine it was to build little cliffhangers or emulate the quick flashing between different scenes in movies or shows that builds tension. It did not work here. Instead, it just annoyed me. I don't mind every chapter or even two POVs in a chapter but there was absolutely no need to switch POVs so many times per chapter as often as they did.

To me, this book (as well as House of Sky and Breath) didn't feel like Sarah J. Maas books. I think I read somewhere that she switched editors and that might be part of it but, for me, the things that make Maas books addicting weren't present here. The romance wasn't romancing, the plot was convoluted not layered in a fascinating way, the pacing was weird, shock twist moments didn't feel that surprising...it just wasn't executed well.

Now, I didn't hate the book, even if I was left feeling disappointed. I enjoyed seeing the characters again and there were some that truly carried the book despite the flaws elsewhere. When I was actively reading it, I didn't want to stop, especially in the beginning. But overall I was left feeling disappointed, even though I was already apprehensive going into this book after House of Sky and Breath. That being said, the first book remains a top-tier book and I do love the characters a lot. Sadly, this book didn't do them or their stories justice.

I'm sure this review is convoluted in its own way at this point. Overall, disappointed but didn't hate it. Four stars for nostalgia and the ACOTAR gang but three stars for literally everything else.

Thanks for reading!

October 2022 Wrap-Up + Haul

Well, October was another underwhelming reading month. I had hoped to read a bunch of spooky books, get through some newly hauled books, and just have a better reading month than September. However, I only read a single book again. I struggled a lot with reading due to our current living/working/commuting situation. However, I've already read two books in November so I'm hopeful this upcoming month will be a turning point in my reading year. Who knows, maybe I'll get quite a bit more in before the year is concluded.

I also only hauled four books this month, which was good for my bank account and I honestly was too stressed to think about buying books. I am really excited about all of the books that I got this month, though, and can't wait to talk about them.

1.
Title: A Lair of Bones
Author: Helen Scheuerer
Rating: 4 // 5 stars
Review TK

The first book that I got this month was my Fairyloot edition of The Blood Traitor by Lynette Noni. I ordered this all the way back in April (and was lucky enough to snag a matching stenciled edge) and it finally shipped! I knew it wasn't going to ship until around this time but the wait was still quite long. Now that I finally have my copy of the third book in this trilogy, though, I can binge read it all at once!

Then I picked up The River of Silver by S.A. Chakraborty. This is a collection of stories that is a companion to the Daevabad trilogy. The stories are set before, during, and after the trilogy (I think) and I'm so excited to give these a go on my next read through. I love this world so having more time with characters I love is going to be quite exciting, I think.

The third book I got was my Illumicrate edition of The Atlas Paradox by Olivie Blake. This is the sequel to The Atlas Six (which I've still not read) and is absolutely stunning. I love the edges and that it has a completely redesigned cover. I can't wait to put it on the shelf with the first book and see how they look together. Hopefully I'll also enjoy reading them.

The last book I got in October was my Fairyloot edition of These Twisted Bonds by Lexi Ryan. I ordered this even farther back in February and was lucky enough to snag the stenciled edge version and have no issues with the shipping. This is absolutely beautiful and I can't wait to finally finish this duology now that I have this. It came out during the summer but wasn't scheduled to ship until now so I'm just glad the wait is finally over for it.

Thanks for reading!

Series Review: "The STEM-inist Novellas" by Ali Hazelwood

Series Title: The STEM-inist Novellas
Author: Ali Hazelwood
Genre: Romcom
Reading Order & Individual Ratings:
  1. Under One Roof - 5/5 stars
  2. Stuck With You - 4/5 stars
  3. Below Zero - 4.5/5 stars
Overall Rating: 4.5 // 5 stars

I, like many people, read The Love Hypothesis because of the hype it received on BookTok. I, like many people, absolutely adored it. The Love Hypothesis, which is Ali Hazelwood's first book, is one of my all-time favorite romcoms. It was so funny and kept me engaged the entire read. But this isn't a review for The Love Hypothesis. No, today we're going to talk about three more Ali Hazelwood works!

The STEM-inist novellas, which include Under One Roof, Stuck With You, and Below Zero, are a trilogy following a trio of friends as they navigate romances in their lives. Each novella follows a different main couple, though the others do make their appearances, in a variety of situations. First publishing solely as audiobooks, the novellas were then released a few months later as ebooks, which is how I read them.

Under One Roof is my favorite of the three, I think. It's an enemies-to-lovers-esque story about two characters who each own half of a house but neither wants to sell or move out. One is an environmental scientist and the other is a lawyer at an environment-destroying company. It's absolutely hilarious but also incredibly heartwarming following their reluctant relationship growth across the time they live together. By far I think it's also the best written, in terms of character development and story progression. It was just so cute and I couldn't stop smiling the entire time I was reading it.

The second is Stuck With You which follows two engineers at rival companies who get stuck in an elevator a few weeks after having a whirlwind 24-hour romance that ended in betrayal and anger. The novella is told in a series of flashbacks to their romance and their present setting in an elevator. I enjoyed it, and it was cute, but it definitely didn't feel nearly as developed as the other stories. I think the main thing with this was that it was based around a miscommunication trope and I don't really like those much. It felt like there wasn't much story progression or plot from that except for them having an actual conversation and realizing they were both wrong. Because of that, I just didn't swoon as much as the others even if I still enjoyed it.

The last novella is Below Zero and follows two NASA scientists with a hint of rivals-to-lovers. One is injured and stuck in a life-or-death situation and the other is coming to save them. This novella also switches between past and present but I felt like it did it in such a better way. The main plot for this also didn't feel like it was based around the miscommunication trope, though there was some of that. Instead, there was other stuff going on that made it a well-balanced story in my mind. It was quite cute and enjoyable seeing the potential relationship that has spanned years finally culminate in this novella.

One of my favorite things about Ali Hazelwood is the inclusion of science and academia in her books. While I studied humanities in university, I still took STEM classes and they always fascinated me. I also just think it's great to see science represented in romance books because I rarely ever see it. My ranking of these would have to go Under One Roof, Below Zero, and then Stuck With You. Each was quite different but they also all felt like Ali Hazelwood stories. I'm beginning to get a vibe for how she writes and I'm quite looking forward to the fact that I can reach for her books when I'm in the mood for these types of stories. I quite enjoyed this trilogy of novellas and think they've been great to hold me over until her next full-length novel, Love On the Brain, comes out later this month. I also am very much looking forward to the paperback bindup of these novellas that is coming out at the beginning of next year!

Thanks for reading!

June 2022 Wrap-Up + Haul

Another month of 2022 gone, bringing us right to halfway through the year! I cannot believe we're already halfway. It seems like this year has flown by so far and June was gone in a blink of an eye. I was on-and-off busy this month and was fully engaged with some different TV shows, so I didn't get around to reading much. I only read two books this month, but I did love both of them. I also started another and got over 400 pages in, but didn't finish it until the first of July so I'm not able to count it here. Anyway, I'm also combining my book haul for June in this post as I read so little, so let's just dive right in!

1.
Title: Serpent & Dove
Author: Shelby Mahurin
Rating: 5 // 5 stars
-reread-

2.
Title: Foul Lady Fortune
Author: Chloe Gong
Rating: 4.5 // 5 stars

I definitely hauled way more books than I read this month. I hauled twelve physical books and I'm excited about all of them. To be fair, four of these were ones I ordered months ago and finally came. The rest...I have no excuses. I just wanted them. Let's just dive in!

The first book I got this month was One For My Enemy by Olivie Blake. I had just been scrolling around on TikTok one day and stumbled across a video about this. It's one of Olivie Blake's backlist titles (she wrote the much loved The Atlas Six that was originally self-published but has been traditionally published now). I was just very intrigued by this one and impulse bought it. I'm so glad I did as less than a week later it was announced this was another title being traditionally published and was then no longer available for purchase. So I swooped in and got that self-pupped edition before it was too late, wooo!

The next books I got were from the Fairyloot Trove restock back in April? May? I think I ordered these in April. I got five books in the restock, though one was a new copy of a book I'd bought secondhand that was damaged so I'm not including it in this haul as I just swapped copies. There was some issues with queuing and website crashing but I somehow managed to get everything I wanted and more.

The first book I got from this restock was Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim. This was my main goal for this restock and I'm so glad I was able to get it. I order the UK cover for this series and this Fairyloot edition is even more stunning with the slight color changes, artwork, and edges. I also was able to get the second book preorder so I definitely wanted a matching copy. I waited out six months from when I first saw this edition to when it restocked and I'm so glad I got it now instead of paying insane resale prices.

I also picked up Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber. This features an alternate cover, stenciled edges, and various artwork. I have to say, I think I prefer the original UK cover but I do like the rest of the customizations. However, the main reason I got this was because it resells for so high so I knew I should get it now at retail price for if I love this book when I eventually read it. I'm also comfortable with this because I will be able to easily resell it for what I paid or more, so either way I come out on top.

Then I scored the restock of all restocks: Kingdom of the Wicked and Kingdom of the Cursed by Kerri Maniscalco. These Fairyloot editions have stenciled edges, custom covers, and gorgeous artwork. I originally didn't get the box KOTW came in and, because I didn't want to pay insane amounts for the first book, I didn't get KOTC when it went on sale. However, when they announced these were being restocked, I was like...hmmmm. I put it on my list to get but only if I was able to get Six Crimson Cranes first. Somehow I lucked out and it was still in stock when I got in, so now I own these gorgeous editions. And I snagged the third book's preorder after this restock so I'll have the full set, which is insanely lucky.

Then I picked up Masters of Death by Olivie Blake. This was announced, along with One For My Enemy, that it was being traditionally published. The moment I saw that announcement I raced online to see if I could still get a copy...and I could! I ordered it that moment and it arrived a couple days later and I'm quite happy. I've really lucked out on the timing with Olivie's books going out of print and I'm hoping to slowly get the rest before they potentially go out of print too.

Up next is the hardcover of The War of Two Queens by Jennifer L. Armentrout. The book actually came out a few months ago but the hardcover wasn't released until recently. I actually think I got this in May but I forgot to include it in my haul and I forgot to even catalogue it in my book collection spreadsheet. I wasn't originally going to get the hardcover so fast but they printed it with special embossing, artwork, etc and I knew I'd want that. I'm hoping that they continue this with the rest of the books and maybe go back to the previous books so they're all uniform.

Then I got my June Fairyloot box (unboxing soon!) so spoilers if you haven't gotten it yet and don't want to know. This month there were two books and I'm excited about both of them. The first is Twin Crowns by Catherine Doyle and Katherine Webber. This was a bonus paperback this month and I'm so glad it was included. I originally was going to get the Waterstones edition but when this was announced I held off, hoping for a beautiful edition. Luckily, it's stunning. There's an alternate cover, stenciled edges, and is digitally signed. I probably won't read this edition, though, as it's quite a stiff paperback and I don't want to ruin it. However, I am looking forward to this book so much.

The main book of the June box was This Vicious Grace by Emily Thiede. This edition has a custom cover, stenciled edges, art on the endpages, embossing on the cover, and is signed. I will say, this edition is quite yellow. I do prefer the original UK cover, but I also like that I will be able to have a very colorful bookshelf with all the colorful books Fairyloot has been doing. I actually haven't heard much about this book but I'm hopeful it'll be great.

Then I picked up It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey because it was on sale by more than 50% off. I've heard great things about this and recently it was announced it's being adapted for screen. I have to say, I'm not happy with this edition. The ISBN and publisher match the USA edition. And it is that edition, but printed in the UK. So it's very stiff and will not match my other Tessa Bailey books. I'm a bit upset as I hate how stiff this is but I've decided I will read it before attempting to get the actual US edition printed in the US to make sure I like the book itself.

Up next I grabbed Foxy Tales by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti. This is a collection of bonus content (mainly from the Zodiac Academy series) that was published as a fundraiser for charity. It was only offered in print for the month of June. I haven't yet read the series (I'm waiting for the last book to release in December before I start it) but I knew that if I like the series I'll want this collection of bonus content. And if I don't like the series, I'm sure there will be a series lover who missed out on it and will want it.

The last book I got in June was City of Gods and Monsters by Kayla Edwards. I first heard of this book on TikTok and immediately put it on my wishlist. I ended up getting the ebook, but as the weeks progressed I started to want the physical copy more and more. At the end of the month I ended up just impulse buying it after it had sat in my cart for ages because I wanted to read it and annotate it as I did. I actually have also already finished it and it is, for sure, my favorite book of 2022 so far. I absolutely loved it (though I finished it the first day of July, aka the day I'm writing this, so I can't include it in my June wrap-up. It's an urban romance-fantasy and it was just everything I wanted and more. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Well, those are the twelve books I got in June. Did you see any that looked interesting to you? Did you see any favorites? I cannot wait to dive into the ones I haven't read yet!

Thanks for reading!

Book Review: "House of Sky and Breath" by Sarah J. Maas

Title: House of Sky and Breath
Author: Sarah J. Maas
Series: "Crescent City" #2
Genre: Adult Fantasy
Page Length: 805 pages
Publication Date: February 15, 2022
Rating: 5 // 5 stars

It's been over a month since I finished this book and I think I'm finally able to talk about my feelings around it. Overall, I loved it. But I also wanted more from it.

I do have to say, this is not my favorite Sarah J. Maas book. I have been reading SJM for seven years now and have come to expect a lot from her books. At bare minimum, I expect to love all her books. I also had very high expectations for this book. However, while I loved this book, it didn't hit those expectations (which is partly on me for having such high ones).

Like I said, I did love this book. There were a lot of parts that I loved. There's a lot I can't wait to reread.  But this book was also long and didn't quite grip me the same way as the first book did. I'm wondering, though, if this is a series where I need to reread the book in order to fully appreciate. Seeing as I loved the first book more on the second run than the first read through, I think this might be the case?

The first book set up a very intriguing world where I wasn't sure where the story was going. I basically went into this book not knowing what to expect. That being said, this plot was very different than anything else I've ever read from SJM. However, I also think that the plot dragged a bit, which is strange for a SJM book. I can only chalk it up to the new style of story she's written here.

There were some elements that were supposedly important yet ended up not playing any role in the final bit of the book. This felt like a bit of a waste for now, though I can only assume it's leading up to something in the next novel? SJM does like to leave breadcrumbs and foreshadow books in advance.

We also got two new POVs for a total of five POV characters in this book. This was a lot. I loved these characters in the first book and was hoping they'd get more page time in this one. However, I think the fact we had five different POVs but the same page count meant that we got less time with each individual character. SJM likes big ensemble casts but I also don't think that each POV needed equal page time. In my opinion, even if these are setting up big character arcs for the rest of the book, this book would have benefited from the POVs being more varied in page time.

That being said, I enjoyed how we got more of the ensemble cast of characters in this one. There were some group dynamics that I loved in the book as well. I can only hope we'll get to see these groups grow closer in the next book.

The ending was a wild ride. SJM's final 100 pages are always a wild ride and this was no exception. I think I would have rated this book less than five stars if the ending wasn't stellar. There were some things that I was picking up throughout the book that I figured was SJM setting something up and I was right! It was very satisfying to finally start noticing these things in advance after years of reading her books.

There were so many different elements to the ending. But if anyone has read the book, they'll know the biggest part. I'm actually not sure how I feel about it. On one hand, I love it and am incredibly excited to see where the next book goes. On the other hand, I'm not quite sure if I like it at this point in time or ever.

Overall, I did love this book. But this definitely has not knocked any books off the top spots of my favorite SJM books list. I think a reread will be very beneficial and I cannot wait to see where the third book goes (hopefully we get it in 2023).

Thanks for reading!

January 2022 Wrap-Up

And just like that the first month of the year is over. This month was a bit up and down in terms of real life, but when it comes to reading I am so incredibly happy with how this month went. In fact, I think if I'd put my mind to it and watched a little less Netflix, I could have read even more than what I already did. In total, I read 12 books in January and enjoyed all of them. In addition, I finished two book series and discovered some new all time favorites! Let's go ahead and dive right in.

1.
