Unboxing: Fairyloot's "Hidden Worlds" (January 2023)

Here comes the first Fairyloot unboxing of 2023! This box was okay in my opinion and I'm not sure if that's because of the content or because I've been subscribed for over a year now so my standards are a bit higher. That being said, the book is stunning and there are a couple items that I am super excited about. 

Book Series I Finished in 2022

This past reading year was an interesting one that I'm overall satisfied with. I read 63 books, of which a lot of those were rereads. And of all of those, I finished 8 book series. I am including rereads in that number, but only for series that I reread in their entirety during 2022. Let's go ahead and dive in!

The first series I finished was the Sands of Arawiya duology by Hafsah Faizal which consists of We Hunt the Flame and We Free the Stars. These were the first two books I read in 2022 and the first series I finished. I rather enjoyed these books, though I do think I would have enjoyed them more if I hadn't read them as the first books out of a reading slump over the holidays. They needed more time and attention than I gave them. But I still enjoyed them and look forward to rereading them in the future.

The second series I finished this year was the Fable duology by Adrienne Young. These two books are in my top reads of the year and I had so much fun with this duology. I've enjoyed everything I've read by Adrienne, but I was pushed to read these ones sooner because a family member was raving about them. These books were pure escapism and fun for me. The world was so vivid and I felt like I never wanted to leave. I've thought about these books a lot since I finished them and I can't wait to dive into the spin-offs in the future.

Up next, I reread the entire Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull. This is one of my all time favorite middle-grade series from when I was younger. I was really in the mood for a middle-grade so I ended up just picking up the first one again...which spiraled into me rereading the rest of the series and the sequel series in one long binge. It was a pure joy being back in these books and going on these adventures again. I've loved these books since I was a child and there's so much nostalgia wrapped up in these pages that it was a very comforting reread.

After Fablehaven, I decided to just dive straight into reading the sequel series, Dragonwatch, also by Brandon Mull. This series follows the same characters (and some new) on new adventures and trials. We got to explore a lot more of the world and it was so fascinating. Most of all, this series felt like a warm hug and a pure comfort. Getting to be back with characters I love but going on new adventures in new places was such a treat. I know that I'll be revisiting this series just as much as I revisit the original.

The fifth series I read was the Raybearer duology by Jordan Ifueko. This is an African-inspired fantasy duology that was so incredibly vivid and fascinating. I'd heard nothing but good things about it so when it was on sale I picked up a copy as fast as I could. I binged these so fast because I just couldn't put them down. The one thing I wish was different, though, is that there was more on-page found family. So much of the story revolves around protecting loved ones and connecting with family. But it felt like most of it was us being told how close this family was and not so much seeing it happen which I wished for. Though that's probably the only issue I have with them.

Then I reread the entire Curse of the Gods series by Jaymin Eve and Jane Washington. This is one of my favorite RH series and I just needed a fun reread so I picked it up. I also realized I hadn't reread these in a while and it was only my first time rereading the last book since it came out. It was so much fun being back in this fantasy romance. Overall, just a fun revisit to a great series that I love.

Then I read one of my new all-time favorites: the Mindf*ck Series by S.T. Abby. This is a five book series (though each book is pretty short) that I stayed up reading in one night. It's a super dark story with a bit of romance in it and I was absolutely obsessed. It's about a serial killer (though you're on her side) who falls in love with the FBI agent working to find her. Of course, the story is about so much more than that. I laughed, I cried, I got angry, I got scared...it was a whole emotional rollercoaster. It's also now one of my all-time favorites that I think about constantly, though I definitely recommend checking out the trigger warnings before reading.

The last series I finished in 2022 was the STEM-inist Novella Collection by Ali Hazelwood. These are three romance novellas focused around women in STEM. I definitely have my favorites within these novellas but overall I enjoyed them. They weren't particularly groundbreaking and I still prefer her longer works but it was still cute and fun.

Unboxing: Fairyloot's "Dance With Death" (December 2021)

It's been a hot minute since I've been subscribed to Fairyloot and I'm honestly thrilled to be back. It feels like Christmas every month when you get to open a fancy box of goodies. That being said, the main reason I resubscribed was for the special editions (I'd rather pay for the box with goodies included than pay more for just the book from a secondhand seller). That being said, December is my first box back in a while and I'm quite excited to just dive into the goodies!

The first item that was included in this month's box was a sword letter opener inspired by Jacks' dagger from Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber. Now, I haven't read this book yet and I'm not sure if I will. However, this is a very subtle fandom item and it is very pretty. It will definitely get used, whether be for its purpose of opening letters or for pictures or some other decor. 

The next item was an iron on patch inspired by Nasir's tattoo from We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal and was designed by the author herself. I actually read this duology right as I got this box and really enjoyed it. I do like the design of this patch, but I'm not sure what I'll end up using it for as I've never been much of a patch person. Maybe once I have my books out of storage and back on shelves I'll be able to think of some use for it. 

Up next was a book sleeve inspired by These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong and designed by @celestialfang. I absolutely love this duology and this sleeve is gorgeous. The artwork is stunning and I anticipate this sleeve getting a lot of use in the future as I travel around. It's also nice to start building my merch collection for this duology as it is one of my favorites. 

The next items were two foil bookmarks inspired by Hades and Persephone and designed by @gracezhuart. These are the first in a new collectible series and I'm quite excited about these ones. I love bookmarks and these two are absolutely stunning so I'm excited to see what the rest of the series is going to look like. Plus, bookmarks are one of those things that a reader can never have too many of. 

Instead of a fifth item we actually got a bonus book this month! This book was The Coldest Touch by Isabel Sterling. It's a paperback edition, features an exclusive cover, and is digitally signed. I haven't read anything by Isabel Sterling yet, but I do own her another of her books and am interested in all of them. It's exciting getting a bonus book in a box but I'm not quite sure how I feel about the color schemes on this cover. 

The tarot cards this month were the Nine and Ten of Pentacles and feature characters from the Red Rising series by Pierce Brown and designed by @lizzart_zardonicz. The cards and artwork are stunning and I'll definitely be keeping them with my Red Rising books once I have them all out of storage and back on my shelves. I do have to say, though, that it's a bit tiring to still be getting tarot cards as they've been doing them for literally years.

The book this month is Year of the Reaper by Makiia Lucier. This edition features an exclusive cover, sprayed edges, artwork on the dust jacket designed by @emiliesnaith_art, foil embossing on the cover by the same artist, and comes with a signed bookplate. There was also an author letter on the back of an art print designed by the same artist included. This book was one that was on my wishlist anyway so I'm quite excited to have this beautiful edition.

Overall, this was a strong first box back with Fairyloot. For me, not every month is going to be the best box I've ever received and that's okay. As long as I enjoy the majority of the box each month I'll consider my Fairyloot subscription to be worth it. This month is one where I like pretty much everything! I'm eager to see what Fairyloot has planned for 2022, though, as their editions have just kept getting more stunning each month.

January 2022 Wrap-Up

And just like that the first month of the year is over. This month was a bit up and down in terms of real life, but when it comes to reading I am so incredibly happy with how this month went. In fact, I think if I'd put my mind to it and watched a little less Netflix, I could have read even more than what I already did. In total, I read 12 books in January and enjoyed all of them. In addition, I finished two book series and discovered some new all time favorites! Let's go ahead and dive right in.

Book Review: "We Free the Stars" by Hafsah Faizal

I will say I was a bit worried going into this book. I enjoyed the first book but didn't love it and this one was quite a bit longer. I was worried my reading slump I'm trying to recover from would make it difficult to read. And I was also worried for all my favorite characters. It was a bit of a slow start for me but after around 200 pages I couldn't put it down. I ended up reading the majority of the book in one night and I really enjoyed it. 

The characters were what really kept me going. I was invested in the plot but more than that I was invested in the characters I'd gotten attached to in the first book. Seeing the development and journeys they all went on was one of the most enjoyable aspects of the duology for me. I was also just really scared about what would happen to each of them that I couldn't put the book down until I knew the outcome. 

The romance aspect of the duology wasn't one that I felt as strongly as the rest. I think part of that was the fact I'm still recovering from a slump. I enjoyed the romance but I think a lot of people are more invested in it. What I will say, though, is that I think the romance was pretty realistic in terms of pacing and whatnot. I liked the pining, I liked the messiness, and I liked the angst between them. Also, the number of quotable lines about love was just...chef's kiss.

Like I said, I was really invested in the plot. While I am more of a character-driven reader, plot is still an important part of my enjoyment of books. The stakes in this book were high and that added to the burning need to find out the ending as fast as possible. 

Apart from the romance, what held the book back for me was the writing style. This duology has beautiful writing and so many beautiful quotes in it. It truly is top tier. However, the lengthy descriptions and internal thoughts/feelings were a bit difficult for me to stay tuned in to right now. This is 100% because I am still getting out of a slump. I know for a fact I'll reread these books in the future and I fully expect it to be easier for me to get along with the writing style and enjoy the book even more than I already did. 

Overall, I enjoyed this duology a lot. I think this sequel is my current favorite of the duology, but on future rereads that could change. The characters in this world were my favorite, but I also loved the world, magic system, and adventure that the reader goes on. I can't wait to see what else Hafsah Faizal writes in the future because I'm for sure a fan after finishing this duology.

One of my goals as I try to dig myself out of my reading slump is reading more of my backlist tbr. I've owned We Hunt the Flame since it came out and I finally read it! I will admit, it did take me quite a long time. I started it mid-December and just finished it the second week of January. It was my own fault for starting it before the holidays when I was so busy really.

I really enjoyed We Hunt the Flame but I do think me taking so long to read it didn't help. I truly think this book would have been five stars if I'd read it in a few days like I'd initially planned instead of almost a month. 

I liked the characters and have high hopes for the sequel. I find the world really intriguing and the legends they have fascinating. I want to know even more about the magic system. I just made the mistake of taking so long to read it that I forgot things a lot. 

I am so nervous for what the sequel will hold. The characters are what I enjoyed the most and I'm nervous to see how they're going to fare in the sequel with how things were left at the end of this first book. I just hope that my favorites all make it out alive and well. 

Overall, this was a rather short review but I think it gets the message across. I enjoyed We Hunt the Flame and can't wait to see how the sequel goes. Plus, I'm excited to finally check this book off of my tbr list.

Series I Finished in 2021

This is usually one of my favorite posts to do at the end of each year. However...I only finished one series in 2021. The reading year was dismal overall and reading multiple books in series was difficult for me. I'm hoping that 2022 will be better as there are so many series that have concluded recently that I've been excited for. To make this post a bit better, I am also going to discuss just a few of the series that I hope to complete in the new year. Let's go ahead and dive right in!

The one and only series I finished was the These Violent Delights duology by Chloe Gong. It took me a while to get through the first one since I was slumping pretty hard but I really enjoyed it. I then had an advance copy of the sequel, Our Violent Delights, and read that in just a couple sittings. I absolutely loved the second book even more than the first and it has placed this duology into one of my favorite series of all time. I highly recommend it, though do be reminded it is a Romeo & Juliet retelling and prepare for any heartbreak that might come with that.

Now that I've discussed the one series I finished in the past year, I'm excited to talk about the top five series I'm hoping to read in 2022. As there are over thirty that I have on my immediate series list, it was a bit difficult to narrow down to the ones I'm most excited for at the moment. 

The first is the Hollow Crown duology by Zoriada Córdova. I read Incendiary when it first came out and absolutely loved it. I was so looking forward to the sequel, Illusionary, in 2021 and then my reading slump hit and I never read it. I do plan on reading it ASAP, though, as it will be quite a quick series to finish. I even plan on annotating my reread of the first book which is really exciting.

The next series I want to finish in the new year is the Empirium trilogy by Claire Legrand. I was so excited for the final book, Lightbringer, to come out after the ending of Kingsbane. But it again came out during my insane reading slump and I never felt like it was the right time to reread the series and finish it out. I also have to admit that I'm a bit worried as to how this trilogy will end and how my feelings will be at the end.

The third series I'm talking about is the Shadow Game trilogy by Amanda Foody. I read the first two books last spring and absolutely loved them. However, the second book broke my heart and I couldn't dive straight into the third just yet. And then my slump hit again and I never actually read the third book. It's on my TBR for the next few months and I am so nervous for how this series is going to conclude.

Up next is the We Hunt the Flame duology by Hafsah Faizal. I started the first book at the end of the year and am still finishing. I'm really enjoying it and I'm really just interested to see how the rest of the story goes. I am slumping a bit right now but I'm hopeful that it's not impacting the book too much for me. 

Lastly, I want to finally finish the Veil Diaries by B.L. Brunnemer. This is a book series that I've been following from the very beginning many years ago. The final book came out a while back and I still haven't read it. I want to reread the entire series before getting to the end, but there's also nine books so it is a bit of a commitment. But it's also a story that I love and am looking forward to finishing (for now). There is a sequel series that is coming soon as well, so I definitely need to finish this series ASAP. 

So those are the top five series I want to finish in the new year, out of over thirty that I have on my immediate TBR. Basically, I just want to finish more stories that I've been in the middle of for years. Do you have any series that you want to read in the new year? Let me know in the comments!

May 2019 Book Haul!

Well all...I'm a tad disappointed in myself because of the number of books I'm hauling this month but I'm also not that upset since I'm so excited for all of these. I have a massive amount of books to talk about today so I'm going to keep individual comments on each book to a minimum, but I thought an explanation here would be a good idea. I got a total of 44 books this month. I know...I'll let that sink in. I can't say I'm particularly proud of that number, but I'm not upset. Let me start off by saying that 11 of those books were free, 10 were books that I'd already paid for before this month, and the rest were all either super bargain finds or preorders where I was able to use gift cards on some. Someone should really tell publishers that there are other months in the year to release books because so many amazing books published this month and I still haven't even gotten all the ones I want yet. 

Anyway, for this haul I'm going to split it into sections rather than go by when I got them like I usually do. I'm going to start with preorders and then talk about books that I got for free. After that, I'll move into books that I found really good prices on before finishing with books that were just some random purchases. Let's just go ahead and dive right in! 

I'm starting out with my preorder and new releases that I got this month. Despite how many there are here, I was actually pretty selective with what I purchased considering how many amazing books released in May. I'll definitely be playing catch-up with all these releases for months to come.

Up first, we have books that released on May 7th, the first of those being Again, But Better by Christine Riccio in the Barnes & Noble signed exclusive edition. I'm pretty excited to have this on my shelf, even though I was originally going to wait on buying it. I enjoyed this story when I read it in April and I do love the physical beauty of the book.

Next is Broken Throne by Victoria Aveyard, which is also a signed Barnes & Noble exclusive edition. I've actually never read Red Queen but I am planning to read through as much of the series as I can this summer so I decided to go ahead and get this one while I had a gift card. It's definitely my favorite cover of the series and I already am excited to read it.

The last book I got on May 7th was Finale by Stephanie Garber, also a Barnes & Noble exclusive edition. I am beyond excited for this book and I'm planning on reading it this month. After the ending that was book 2 in this trilogy, I really have no idea how this book is going to go but I'm excited nonetheless.

The next book releases I got this month were released on May 14th. The first of these was Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. This book wasn't even on my radar until April but I am beyond excited to have a copy. I don't read much contemporary but this one sounds so good and there have been a lot of positive reviews floating around.

The next book I got May 14th was We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal. This is another book with stellar reviews and a lot of hype that I am super excited to read. Not only is it simply gorgeous but I am obsessed with the synopsis. I honestly hope I can read it this summer before I leave for abroad, but we'll see.

The last two book releases I got this month are actually for the same book which released on May 21: Kingsbane by Claire Legrand. I got the regular US hardcover and also the Fox and Wit special edition which has beautiful black sprayed edges. I love both of these editions and, after meeting Claire, they're both signed and so special to me! 

I got a pretty good number of free books this month! Five of those were physical books and the rest were ebooks/audiobooks. I honestly don't think I've had a month where I've gotten more free books sent to me and I'm honestly quite giddy when I look back on these.

The first book I got was an advanced copy of We Contain Multitudes by Sarah Henstra which was sent to me by Novl. The moment I read the synopsis for this book I knew that I had to read it and I'm so grateful that I was sent a copy. I have already read and reviewed this book and, spoiler, I loved it! 

Up next I got a copy of Angel Land by P.S. Scott which was sent to me for a bookstagram tour that I participated in. I don't know much about this book other than there's angels but I do know that I really like the cover a lot. 

Then my friend gave me a copy of The Mermaid's Voice Returns in This One by Amanda Lovelace. I enjoyed The Princess Saves Herself in This One but I haven't yet read the second collection in this companion series thing. I am super excited about this and I'm currently reading my way through it! 

Next I got an advanced copy of Dragonslayer by Duncan M. Hamilton which was sent to me by Tor. I am participating in a blog tour for this book next month and I'm super excited about it. This book sounds super fun and it's not really that long, which is nice because I need a break from super long books. 

The last book I got sent for free was Only A Breath Apart by Katie McGarry which was sent to me by Tor Teen. I've absolutely loved every one of Katie McGarry's books that I've read so far and I cannot wait to read this one. It sounds amazing and I'm super excited to see Katie write a little bit of paranormal mixed into her contemporary.

In mid-April, I placed a Book Outlet order. I was having a stressful month--even though April was a great month, looking back there was SO much going on--and I decided to just take a peek at Book Outlet. Lo and behold, they had so many amazing books on there...books that had been on my Amazon wishlist for a very long time. They were also having a sale and free shipping, so I decided that if I made it through my stressful English Lit presentation, I would reward myself with an order. And I did. It was waiting for me when I got home from college so let's just dive in! 

First things first, I got the entire Something Strange and Deadly trilogy by Susan Dennard. I love Susan's other series and I'd both heard good things about this book and been interested in reading it. Plus, they had the new covers that I much prefer to the old ones so I decided to get the entire trilogy. I am planning on reading the entire trilogy this summer, and I've already read the first one. 

Next, I picked up Endsinger by Jay Kristoff as I saw they had the out-of-print hardcover available. I decided I wanted to collect this trilogy in hardcover so that it matched my other Jay books and I'm super excited to have this on my shelf. 

Up next I picked up Winterspell by Claire Legrand. This is one that I'd been wanting for a while and, when I saw it on sale, I decided to go ahead and pick it up. Additionally, I was hoping that there was a chance I was going to be able to meet Claire on her Kingsbane tour, so I wanted to snag a cheap copy while I could.

Then I got The Masked City and The Lost 
Plot by Genevieve Cogman, books two and four in The Invisible Library series. I got book one and three for Christmas, and I actually read book one in May, so I decided I would get the other books in the series with matching covers as I'm also planning on reading the entire series this summer. 

The last two books I got were Sabriel by Garth Nix and City of Lies by Sam Hawke. Both of these are fantasies that I've heard good things about and have been on my wishlist for a while but I hadn't ever pulled the trigger on buying them. The covers are gorgeous and I can't wait to get around to these eventually. 

I also went to my local used bookstore when I got home from college and placed a couple eBay orders that had some good deals on them. The great thing about my local used bookstore is that when you bring books in to donate, they give you in-store credit that you can apply to up to half-off your purchase. This means that the already-cheap books that I'm about to talk about were even cheaper.

First, I got the US paperback of A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas. It's another edition of this book but the reason I got it is because I want to collect the US paperbacks and heavily annotate them, something I'm not willing to do in my signed/special edition hardcovers.

I also picked up a copy of The Young Elites by Marie Lu. I've heard nothing but amazing things about all of Marie's books and I figured that when I saw it in perfect condition for so cheap, I would give it a try. While I know the Legend trilogy isn't connected to this one, I still think I'm going to read Legend first.

Then I picked up Uglies by Scott Westerfeld in the new paperback covers. I first read a couple books in this series back in middle school when they still had the ugly old covers. Still, I loved the books but never finished the series so my plan is to read Uglies again and, if it's still good, I'll collect the other beautiful paperbacks to read.

Next was a completely random find and that was a bind up of the complete Night Angel trilogy by Brent Weeks. I was actually completely unfamiliar with this trilogy before going to the used bookstore today, but the bind-up was super cheap (I mean...where else am I going to get an entire trilogy for $4) and I have heard a lot of good things about Brent Weeks in general.

Lastly from the local used bookstore is what I consider to be the best bargain find of the whole trip: Iron Gold by Pierce Brown. This hardcover is in near perfect condition and I got it for...wait for it...$5. Retail price is $28 and I don't think I would have been able to find a better copy on eBay or anywhere. Add in that I was going to buy this soon anyway and we have a very satisfied bookworm.

I then placed two eBay orders for books in the same series, so I'll just talk about them all together. I got books 2-5 and one of the novellas in the Covenant series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. These are Pure, Deity, Apollyon, Sentinel, and Daimon (the novella). I found these in pretty good condition for super cheap prices in the out-of-print covers that I really wanted to match the first book. I can't believe I found these for such cheap prices and I'm so excited that I can finally continue on with reading this series. 

I have a few random purchases thrown in this month that don't fit into any of the categories above. The first of these is Crown of Feathers by Nicki Pau Preto. I've heard a lot of good things about this book and the author just opened up spots on her street team, so I figured I would read the book before applying for that.

I also got the paperback of Furyborn by Claire Legrand. The reasoning behind this was that I went to Claire Legrand's signing in May and you had to buy a book to enter the signing line, so I decided to get the paperback of Furyborn since I had been wanting that edition since it came out. I also got it signed and personalized, so I'm very excited about that!

The last two books I'll be talking about are Stormdancer and Kinslayer by Jay Kristoff in the gorgeous US hardcovers. It was a tad difficult finding these editions since the hardcover is out-of-print but I was able to find them for pretty reasonable prices. Now, combined with Endsinger from my BookOutlet order, I have the entire trilogy and can binge-read them soon!

Overall, while this was a large number of books, I'm not overly ashamed of it. All of the books I got this month are ones that I'm super excited about and I can't wait to read. I do plan on seriously cutting back on my book buying, however, as I focus on reading the books I got this month. Though I can already tell that June will be bigger than I anticipated--though not as big as May--just from the amount of books I have coming from publishers.
