Okay y'all, we're about a month away from me having finished this book and I think I've settled my thoughts enough for a coherent review. I have a lot of complicated feelings about this book and how the series has progressed from the first book. I'll start by saying that objectively this is a 3-star book. But I do have a lot of love for the characters and world so I rated it 4-stars. 

I'll start with my issues, of which there are plenty. First, Ithan and Tharion shared one single brain cell this entire book and it annoyed me to the point where I actively rolled my eyes seeing them on page. Ithan mostly got better but Tharion so far still annoys me. Bryce's characterization in this book also felt completely foreign to me. She didn't feel like the Bryce I'd known in the past two books. And, to be honest, there were times she annoyed me as well. 

The plot was confusing and convoluted at times. The big climax of the series fell flat, the ending was rushed and anti-climactic, the stakes never felt high, and overall I was just confused. I think it read like poorly planned fanfiction.

Honestly, my favorite scenes were the ACOTAR crossover scenes, which shouldn't be the case. I should enjoy those scenes, but Crescent City should be able to stand on its own without needing the support of her most famous series. I think it would have been far more intriguing to see a world that stood on its own where the conflicts didn't tie into ACOTAR. 

And, in probably one of my single biggest issues, the POV switches were absolutely insane. I don't mind multiple-POV books or switching POV's every chapter. But multiple POV switches in a single chapter felt like too much. We were getting POV switches after a single page sometimes. I can only imagine it was to build little cliffhangers or emulate the quick flashing between different scenes in movies or shows that builds tension. It did not work here. Instead, it just annoyed me. I don't mind every chapter or even two POVs in a chapter but there was absolutely no need to switch POVs so many times per chapter as often as they did. 

To me, this book (as well as House of Sky and Breath) didn't feel like Sarah J. Maas books. I think I read somewhere that she switched editors and that might be part of it but, for me, the things that make Maas books addicting weren't present here. The romance wasn't romancing, the plot was convoluted not layered in a fascinating way, the pacing was weird, shock twist moments didn't feel that surprising...it just wasn't executed well. 

Now, I didn't hate the book, even if I was left feeling disappointed. I enjoyed seeing the characters again and there were some that truly carried the book despite the flaws elsewhere. When I was actively reading it, I didn't want to stop, especially in the beginning. But overall I was left feeling disappointed, even though I was already apprehensive going into this book after House of Sky and Breath. That being said, the first book remains a top-tier book and I do love the characters a lot. Sadly, this book didn't do them or their stories justice. 

I'm sure this review is convoluted in its own way at this point. Overall, disappointed but didn't hate it. Four stars for nostalgia and the ACOTAR gang but three stars for literally everything else.

March 2022 Book Haul

Well, another month means it's time for another book haul. I truly did not expect to haul as many books as I did this month but...well...things happen. I will say, the main reason why this month's haul was so big was because I had a bunch of packages that got lost in February and only showed up the very first days of March. Plus, I had some preorders finally come through that were quite exciting. 

I picked up sixteen books this month, which is a huge haul for me recently. I am going to be severely cutting back in the upcoming months, though, and just trying to work through my physical and ebook TBRs (though I'll still be getting some books, of course). Without further ado, here's the sixteen books I got this month!

The first book I got this month was the Fairyloot edition of Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan. This is, without a doubt, one of the most stunning editions I have ever owned. It has an exclusive cover (with my favorite colors in the scheme), sprayed edges, artwork on the endpages, embossing on the hardcover, and was signed. I was so excited for this book and was hoping it would be gorgeous, and I'm just blown away by how well done it was. The next two books I got were different editions of House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J. Maas. I picked up the international paperback edition and another standard UK edition. I ordered these in February and they were amongst the packages lost that didn't arrive until this month. I got another hardcover because I want to spray the edges to match the first book. The international paperback is also different from the paperbacks that will be released next year. This one is taller and floppier and just awesome. I'm just glad to have added these to my collection.

The next book I got was The Weeping Tide by Amanda Foody. This was the last of the packages that was lost in February that arrived finally. I am so incredibly excited to have this in my hands. Amanda is one of my favorite authors and the first book in this middle grade series was one of my top books of 2021. I have been eagerly anticipating this sequel. Additionally, this came out at the beginning of February and it took over a month for this copy to finally arrive to me so I'm just glad it's now here.

Then my preorder for The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake came in. This is the signed Waterstones exclusive edition with sprayed edges. I do have to admit, the edges aren't as nice as I'd hoped from the mockup. The coloring is much more vibrant yellow than a gold. However, I still like this edition and am hopeful that I'll enjoy the book just as much. 

When I went to pick up my preorder for The Atlas Six I also picked up a copy of Galatea by Madeline Miller. This is a short story of hers that has been published in a physical standalone format. It's quite a cute little book and the story itself was beautifully written, as to be expected from Madeline Miller. Now all I need to do is finally read Circe and another short story I'll have gotten through her fiction works!

Up next I got the new paperback edition of Rise of the Evening Star by Brandon Mull. This is the second in the Fablehaven series which is my favorite middle grade series. I reread them this month and got the idea to annotate the new covers. I only ended up buying this one though due to shipping timeframes. Either way, it's nice to have a representation of this series on my shelves here. I also just loved revisiting this series in March.

Then I got Poison Study, Magic Study, and Fire Study by Maria V. Snyder. These are the old UK editions but I actually really like these covers so I picked them up secondhand from eBay. The main reason I got them, though, is because I'm doing a big project for one of my postgrad courses with this series as the focus. I figured I should reread it so that I can be all set for that project. If I love it as much the second time as the first, I also will probably get the rest of the series at some point. 

Up next is Gallant by V.E. Schwab. This is the signed Waterstones edition with sprayed edges. It's an absolutely stunning edition and I much prefer it to the US one. While I like the US cover, I hate the sizing of it. I much prefer this cover and like that the UK edition is also a more standard size. I haven't read any of Schwab's works but they have appealed to me and I've been slowly stockpiling my favorite editions over the years. I've also heard great things about this one. 

Then I snagged the Illumicrate edition of A Dark and Hollow Star by Ashley Shuttleworth. This has pink sprayed edges and is signed. I just heard amazing things about this book and wanted to read it. When I checked eBay, I found this edition for less than the price of the standard edition from a brick and mortar store. Plus, it's signed, has sprayed edges, and is the only UK hardcover version. Hopefully I like the book as well!

Then I picked up Wrath of the Dragon King, Master of the Phantom Isle, and Return of the Dragon Slayers by Brandon Mull. These are books two, three, and five in the Dragonwatch series, which is the sequel series to Fablehaven. I've been wanting to read this series since it was first announced but hadn't gotten around to it yet. I already had the first book (though it's in storage) so I only picked up these ones. The fourth one wouldn't have arrived in time to read during my binge read, though, so I'll just pick that one up in the future when I have shelves again. 

The last book I got in March was the Fairyloot edition The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh. I was hoping that they were going to do this book and I'm quite happy that they ended up doing it. This edition has stenciled edges, embossing on the cover, artwork on the endpages, an exclusive cover, and is signed by the author. This edition is beautiful and I'm hoping that this book is as good as I hope it is. Plus, it's a standalone so I don't have the stress of trying to get a matching beautiful edition next year! It's been over a month since I finished this book and I think I'm finally able to talk about my feelings around it. Overall, I loved it. But I also wanted more from it. 

I do have to say, this is not my favorite Sarah J. Maas book. I have been reading SJM for seven years now and have come to expect a lot from her books. At bare minimum, I expect to love all her books. I also had very high expectations for this book. However, while I loved this book, it didn't hit those expectations (which is partly on me for having such high ones). 

Like I said, I did love this book. There were a lot of parts that I loved. There's a lot I can't wait to reread.  But this book was also long and didn't quite grip me the same way as the first book did. I'm wondering, though, if this is a series where I need to reread the book in order to fully appreciate. Seeing as I loved the first book more on the second run than the first read through, I think this might be the case? 

The first book set up a very intriguing world where I wasn't sure where the story was going. I basically went into this book not knowing what to expect. That being said, this plot was very different than anything else I've ever read from SJM. However, I also think that the plot dragged a bit, which is strange for a SJM book. I can only chalk it up to the new style of story she's written here.

There were some elements that were supposedly important yet ended up not playing any role in the final bit of the book. This felt like a bit of a waste for now, though I can only assume it's leading up to something in the next novel? SJM does like to leave breadcrumbs and foreshadow books in advance. 

We also got two new POVs for a total of five POV characters in this book. This was a lot. I loved these characters in the first book and was hoping they'd get more page time in this one. However, I think the fact we had five different POVs but the same page count meant that we got less time with each individual character. SJM likes big ensemble casts but I also don't think that each POV needed equal page time. In my opinion, even if these are setting up big character arcs for the rest of the book, this book would have benefited from the POVs being more varied in page time. 

That being said, I enjoyed how we got more of the ensemble cast of characters in this one. There were some group dynamics that I loved in the book as well. I can only hope we'll get to see these groups grow closer in the next book.

The ending was a wild ride. SJM's final 100 pages are always a wild ride and this was no exception. I think I would have rated this book less than five stars if the ending wasn't stellar. There were some things that I was picking up throughout the book that I figured was SJM setting something up and I was right! It was very satisfying to finally start noticing these things in advance after years of reading her books. 

There were so many different elements to the ending. But if anyone has read the book, they'll know the biggest part. I'm actually not sure how I feel about it. On one hand, I love it and am incredibly excited to see where the next book goes. On the other hand, I'm not quite sure if I like it at this point in time or ever. 

Overall, I did love this book. But this definitely has not knocked any books off the top spots of my favorite SJM books list. I think a reread will be very beneficial and I cannot wait to see where the third book goes (hopefully we get it in 2023).

February 2022 Wrap-Up

Another month of 2022 has gone by and I think it's safe to say it was another month of up and downs. There were some low points but I think, overall, that February was a good month. A lot of good things happened and I read some great books. There was not a single book this month that I didn't love, which is so rare! I only read six books, but half of those were over 700 pages long. So I'm pretty happy with that, even though I was hoping to get through a few more as well. I have high hopes for March's reading month, though we'll see how that goes with university ramping up quite a bit. Anyway, let's dive in!

Unboxing: Dreamy & Co's "Welcome to Crescent City" Box

Today I'm here with something that I haven't done in a while...an unboxing! I rarely buy book boxes anymore, as I usually don't have a need for most of the items that come in them, but I do occasionally splurge on one. Usually the book boxes I buy nowadays are those that have one fandom only, which is exactly what Dreamy & Co does! When they announced the June box, I knew that I had to jump on it. 

I absolutely love this box. I think that you really get good quality items with beautiful designs at an excellent price point. What really made me get this box was the fact that it was only $20 whereas other boxes with all of these goodies usually sell for much higher. I also was, of course, in love with the theme which was all centered around House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas! I feel like I've rambled enough so far so let's go ahead and just dive right in! (Tip: to see the pictures better on their own, click on them and it will give you a slide-show of the enlarged images)

So Dreamy & Co has these super cute boxes that they ship in every month. It's also a perfect sized box for storing art prints, pins, and other small merch items. I plan on keeping this box to use for my Crescent City-themed merch until I have actual bookshelves again!

When you open the box, you're greeted with the spoiler card. I avoided looking at it until after I was done going through the box, but there's information about each item and who the artists were. Plus, the monthly theme artwork is just really pretty.

The first thing that I pulled out of this box was a gorgeous pin banner designed by Evie Bookish with art and the quote "Light it up." Not only is this pin banner stunning, but it's also huge! I am definitely going to be displaying all of my Sarah J. Maas themed pins on this one in the future. It could also work just as a mini tapestry or wall hanging.

The next item that I saw was this gorgeous candle from Flick the Wick. It's theme was Lunathion (the name of the city in the book) and smells like red currant, wood, fig, and obsidian salt. I'm not a scent person so for those who don't know what those smell like together, I'd say that it's a woodsy, yet sweet and salty scent--like something you'd find in a cabin. I really like the smell and I'm very excited to use it in pictures!

The next item that I pulled out was a coaster that has the quote, "Loyal unto death and beyond." It's so gorgeous and I absolutely love the significance behind this quote! This coaster was designed by Dreamy & Co themselves. I actually use coasters quite a bit. I don't use specific sets, but I have a few coasters that I use at my desk and my nightstands and I have a feeling this will be one of them!

Up next was a gorgeous enamel pin designed by Azura Arts. It has the quote, "Through love all is possible," which is one of my favorite quotes from the book. I can't wait to use this one in pictures as well! I have another pin with this quote on it from Bloomsbury, but whereas that one is more simplistic, this new pin has artwork and is beautiful.

The next item was a double-sided sturdy bookmark designed by Dreamy & Co. On one side it says, "You see everything I am, and you don't run away from it." The other side has the quote, "Then let the world know that my first act of freedom was to help my friends." I love both of these quotes and think that this bookmark is so pretty! I can't wait to use it in pictures and for my Crescent City rereads.

Then I pulled out a double-sided wooden bookmark, also designed by Dreamy & Co. This is absolutely stunning and I am so in love with it. One side says, "To live, To love, knowing that it might all vanish tomorrow. It makes everything that much more precious" (there was a typo on this quote on the bookmark, but the company has been in contact with two options for rectifying it). The other side says, "My friend are with me, and I am not afraid." When I tell you the angst I felt reading that quote!

Lastly, there were two double-sided sturdy prints. On one side of each print there was artwork of Hunt and Bryce designed by BxRomance and on the other sides there was quote art designed by Dreamy & Co. I really like the artwork of the characters (it's some of the best I've seen). The quotes one each print were, "Bound by Blood. Tempted by Desire. Unleashed by Destiny," and, "The power shall always belong to those who give their lives to the city." I love both of these quotes and can't wait to use these prints in pictures!

Overall, I am very satisfied with this box. An enamel pin and a candle alone can sometimes cost $20+ so the fact that we got those items plus two more items, two bookmarks, and two prints is really amazing. I am also very happy with the quality of the items in this box and the artwork. I will definitely be buying from Dreamy & Co again when they have another fandom that I'm interested in!

April 2020 Book Haul

Hello everyone! Today I'm here with my book haul for this past April. I'm actually really proud of myself because all of these were either sent to me for free or were books I paid for previously meaning I didn't buy any new books this month! This was a goal for me since I bought so many in March and I'm trying to focus on not spending money (especially as a coping mechanism for lockdown) or growing my TBR even more. That being said, I am super excited for most of the books I got this month so let's dive in!

The first book I got this month was a signed copy Crave by Tracy Wolff. This was sent to me by Entangled Teen for my participation in the blog and instagram tour for this book hosted by FFBC. Unfortunately, I also read this in March and hated it so I'll be unhauling it as soon as it's safe to go places.

The second book I got was a book I ordered all the way back in October and that is the A Court of Thorns and Roses Collector's Edition by Sarah J. Maas. I ordered this through the Apollycon Virtual Signing and it was supposed to come signed and personalized to me but with COVID the event got cancelled so I got a bookplate instead. I am slightly annoyed because I already had a Collector's Edition but I really wanted a personalized copy and, to me, paying full price + shipping + extra shipping since I couldn't get the address switched and had to pay for it to be forwarded wasn't worth  a bookplate. I in no way blame Apollycon or Sarah, but I am annoyed that COVID made this happen.

Up next I got sent an ARC of The Life and (Medieval) Times of Kit Sweetly by Jamie Pacton from Page Street Publishing. I'm participating in the blog and instagram tour for this book as well (also hosted by FFBC). I'm really excited for this one--it was on my radar and wishlist, so when I saw there were tour signups for it I jumped at the chance! I'm actually posting about this book on Thursday and there will be a bunch of fun stuff including a giveaway!

Then I got sent an ARC of The Henna Wars by Adiba Jaigirdar, also from Page Street Publishing for a blog and instagram tour through FFBC. I am also so excited about this one because it's a sapphic love story with rivals-to-lovers and it's an ownvoices novel. I'll be posting about this one on May 13th so don't forget to check back in for all the fun stuff I have planned!

Up next I finally got my UK tour edition of House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas. The story behind this one is quite long--I was supposed to see Sarah on her UK tour when I was in London for spring break (before COVID response actually started) but she cancelled it because of COVID. I wasn't too upset since I've met her before and I wouldn't want her to endanger her health or family but I also was hoping I'd still be able to get this edition. Waterstones was nice enough to put it up for general sale and I was able to snag a copy with some extra goodies (an enamel pin & temporary tattoos). It took over a month to get to me (it shipped March 17 and didn't get here until April 21st). Shipping is already slow because of COVID so it took three weeks to get to my college since I wasn't able to change the address, and then another week until I was able to pay them to ship it to me. Overall, I'm just glad that it's finally here and I can add it to my SJM collection since it is stunning.

The last book I got this month was sent to me by Book Publicity Services and it was an ARC of Thomas Wildus and the Wizard of Sumeria by J.M. Bergen. I read the first book in this middle grade series last year when it came out and really enjoyed it, so I was very excited when they reached out again this year to offer me a review copy. I'll have a review for this up likely by the end of the month so stay tuned for that!

April 2020 Wrap-Up!

Hey all! So if March was a million years long, April flew by. Maybe it was because I finally got used to lockdown and was swamped with schoolwork and maybe it was because the days all blended together. Either way, it's now May and I am shook at how fast that went. I'm working through my final projects and exams and by Tuesday night I will be finished with my junior year of college (thank god). But this post is all about my bookish experience over the last month. I finished a total of 14 books in April (way better than May) and started another. I would have liked to read even more, but I can't be too upset about that number. Hopefully May can be equally as amazing of a reading month. Anyway, without further ado, here are all the books I read in April!

I reread this because the third book in the trilogy finally released last summer/fall time. It's been a while since I read these books so I wanted to have it all fresh in my mind before I read the final book. I have to say, I did enjoy this book a lot on my reread through and I can see why I loved it so much the first time. It was a really quick read as well and I actually flew through. I'm even more excited to reread the second book, though, because that's really when shit starts to go down!

This was always my favorite of the books that had been released so far and, rereading this, I remembered why. It's so addicting and fast-paced. Whereas a lot of the first book focused more on the romance, there's a lot of angst and more of the thriller aspect of the series in this book. I flew through my reread and I'm so excited to read the final book tonight. I literally have been waiting four years for this moment and I cannot wait.

I thought this was an interesting little novella to help get a little bit of backstory on one of the main characters in this trilogy. While it technically takes place between books 1 and 2, a lot of it is told in flashback which I thought was interesting. I liked getting to see not only a bit of Tarver's history but also get to know more about this big plot point that comes out at the end of book 1 and seems to tie into this event from Tarver's past. Overall, was enjoyable and I thought it helped my understanding of the story become a bit better even if it wasn't necessary to read.

This was a really cool book to read. It was a book I was looking forward to all semester because (1) there's pictures and (2) it's all about American black folktales which I've never read before. I really enjoyed getting to read these and then discuss them with my classmates and professor.

This was such a cute little graphic novel and I honestly feel so SEEN after finishing it. There's so much on the different aspects of living with anxiety and I related so much to different parts of this book. Not only that, but the art style is wonderful and the author included little anecdotes throughout which I really enjoyed.
