Favorite Books of 2024

The year of 2024 has finally come to an end. I can't say I'm sad to see it go. In a lot of ways, 2024 was better than the years before it. But just because it wasn't the worst year ever doesn't mean it was an amazing year.

My reading year was the biggest it has ever been. I read 51,808 pages across 133 books. My best reading year prior to that was in 2019 with 43,643 pages across 138 books. So while I read less books this year compared to 2019, my page count was a lot higher.

I read a lot of great books this year...and I also read a lot of middle-of-the-road books. I found my tastes tended towards books that were easy to fall into with addicting stories that felt familiar. I didn't branch out too much from romance, fantasy, or why choose.

The books I've chosen for this list, though, are truly the standout reads of the year. The ones I think back on frequently with fond memories. It was actually really hard to rank them over one another. For the sake of not having the list completely taken over by a single author, I have grouped series together into one listing. Additionally, I don't include rereads or fanfictions in my favorite reads of the year even though I did reread some amazing books and found some great fanfics in 2024.

Before I begin, I wanted to give some honorable mentions to a few books that didn't quite muscle out over the ones on this list but still were ones I enjoyed and consider new favorites. Yellowface by R.F. Kuang, The Teller of Small Fortunes by Julie Leong, and Lights Out by Navessa Allen were also addicting books I couldn't put down. But, without further ado, let's get into my top 10 books of 2024...

Coming in at the tenth spot, we have The Spellshop by Sarah Best Durst. This year had a lot of cozy reads and this is, by far, one of the coziest. I absolutely adored this fantasy book. It felt like a warm hug, like a nostalgic time in childhood that you can't quite grasp anymore, like comfort in the form of paper. The setting was vivid, the characters engaging, the story one I never wanted to leave. I am so excited to read more from this author as this was just...so perfect.

At number nine, we have Cherished by Emilia Emerson. While I loved the entire series this standalone book is set in, this one grabbed me even harder than the others. It's an addicting, multi-faceted story. I am a sucker for a why choose omegaverse and this one had all my favorite things. We had developed characters, plot outside of the romance, realistic conflicts and progression, and so much more. I can't wait to get a copy for my bookshelves the next time I go to read this one.

Number eight goes to Butcher & Blackbird by Brynne Weaver. When I tell you I was addicted to this from page one and couldn't put it down I mean it. It was funny but dark, gruesome but romantic...it was everything it had been raved about. I, personally, really enjoy a funny book that had dark themes. Two serial killers in competition with each other? Sign me up! I truly loved this book and am looking forward to rereading it in the future as well as diving into the last book in just a few weeks.

You can read my full, non-spoiler review here

Number seven is for The Blighted Stars by Megan E. O'Keefe. This book is an adult sci-fi space opera and it. was. so. good. This series has one of the most interesting concepts I've come across with insane implications. I was rooting for all of the characters and I just knew she was gonna break my heart. It was also surprisingly creepy and suspenseful at times. One of my main goals for 2025 is to continue with this trilogy because it's just so good.

For number six I have all of the Ali Hazelwood books I've read this year. This is a case where, even though they're not all in the same series, I didn't want the list to be taken up solely by Ali. I read five of her books this year: Bride, Love Theoretically, Check & Mate, Not In Love, and Love on the Brain. It was one of my goals to get through her backlist romances after reading The Love Hypothesis years ago but not keeping up with her releases. Let me tell you, Ali Hazelwood never misses. I loved every single one I read this year. While I would rank some higher than others, all of these were addicting, fun, enjoyable reads. I am majorly looking forward to everything Ali decides to write in the future, particularly Deep End which is coming out very soon.

My book review for Check & Mate can be found here

Number five goes to The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna. I had this book on my TBR for years but I got into a cycle of wanting to only read it during fall but then not reading it before fall was over...rinse and repeat. This year, I finally read it and it was everything to me. Cozy fantasy is definitely a genre I plan on reading more in because the ones I read this year were just phenomenal. Secret Society was perfection. Found family, cozy atmosphere, stakes just high enough to be invested, well-developed and nuanced characters, a budding romance...I adored it. I cannot wait to reread this in the future as well as pick up more books by this author.

Spot number four goes to His Tesoro by Emilia Rossi. This is a mafia romance from the same author as Cherished and it was phenomenal. I don't read a lot of mafia romance but the ones I do read I tend to really enjoy. This is by far my favorite mafia romance I've ever read and it fully cemented Emilia as one of my new auto-read authors. I just adored the main character and how the romance slowly blossomed into what it became. Truly one of my new all-time favorite books that I can't stop thinking about. I am very much looking forward to the standalone sequel that's coming in 2025 following a character we met in this one.

Number three goes to A Pack for Autumn by Emilia Emerson and A Pack for Winter by Eliana Lee, the first two books in the Cozyverse series. This is a cozy omegaverse world with books set in each season of the year. I read both of these when they came out and they were...delightful. I cannot describe how much I loved these books. I know that these will forever be seasonal reads for me. They're addicting, the spice is on point, and the setting is just perfection.

Number two is for the Pack Darling duet by Lola Rock. I read this not once but TWICE in 2024. It's a hate-to-love omegaverse duology with badass characters and an addicting storyline. I'm a sucker for romances where the characters have to work for it like in hate-to-love or enemies-to-lovers or arranged/forced proximity. This series does it so well and it truly has become a comfort series this year. I know I'll be rereading it often in the future.

You can find my full, non-spoiler review here

And my number one spot goes to Relever and Glisser by Jane Washington, books four and five in the Ironside Academy series. Jane is one of my auto-read authors and has been for almost ten years at this point. This series is an interesting take on the traditional omegaverse structure and I am absolutely obsessed (and have been). These two were recent releases I hadn't read yet and I found them to be just as addicting as the previous books. I particularly loved getting to develop one-on-one relationships between the main character and her love interests as well as seeing the stakes get a bit higher. Overall, just phenomenal and I am both scared and excited to see how the final book is going to go.

Thanks for reading!

Favorite Books of 2023

One of my favorite blog posts to write every year is when I get to talk about my favorite books of the year. 2023 was an interesting reading year for me in that I read a lot of series and inter-connected works. I read 101 books, read 10 series, and found a lot of new favorites which I've narrowed down to my top 10 here. However, I am being a bit cheeky and including books in the same series/inter-connected saga as one entry (otherwise this entire list would just be J. Bree books). But enough of my waffling, let's go ahead and dive in!

Coming in at number 10, we have Ensnared by Rebecca Quinn. This is a spicy rh post-apocalyptic series that I discovered in December and devoured. Now, only the first two books have been released thus far but the third is coming hopefully in the first half of the year. They are such easy books to read and the spice is so good as well.

Number 9 goes to Last Violent Call by Chloe Gong. This is a novella duology set in the Secret Shanghai world and it was everything good. I loved the characters these novellas were about, I loved the stories within them, I loved the domestic fluff. It was so good. Now, I've not get read the final Secret Shanghai book because I'm scared of the ending but this book got me so excited to see how it all wraps up.

At number 8, I have put Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross. The hype around this book was unreal and totally justified, in my opinion. I blew through it and was absolutely enthralled. Rebecca's writing is so beautiful, so moving. The characters were lovely and I am beyond nervous to see how the sequel plays out when I finally get around to it.

Number 7 goes to Heartstopper, Volumes 3, 4, & 5. by Alice Oseman. I already enjoyed these graphic novels but hadn't read the newest ones yet. But season 2 of the show dropped this year and I devoured it. I knew it was time to read the next volumes (and get hyped for the 5th releasing in December). I loved them. Heartstopper is everything good and pure and wonderful. I loved just getting more of these characters' stories and I just want to take each and every one, wrap them in a blanket, and give them a cookie.

For number 6, I have The Bonds That Tie series by J. Bree. My journey with this one is a funny one. I read the first three books at the end of 2022, the next two at the beginning of 2023, and the final one many months later. It was enjoyable and fun but not quite as much as her other series. Then, in the fall, I got the urge to reread the series. Oh my lords! The first time was addicting but this time around was all-consuming. I love these characters, this world, this story. It's such a fun time and is just one of many books that has cemented J. Bree as a new favorite.

Number 5 goes to the Ironside Academy series by Jane Washington. Jane writes bangers, plain and simple. I've loved everything I've ever written by her and this newest series is no exception. It's fun, it's addicting, it's like watching reality TV and being unable to turn away. Which makes sense as it's about an academy for gifted that's also a reality show. It's addicting and the three books we got in 2023 were so good. I'm eagerly anticipating the next ones in the new year.

For number 4, I have Crown of Oaths and Curses by J. Bree. This is the first in J. Bree's newest series that started releasing in 2023 and I am obsessed with it. Like with all of her books, I think about this one constantly. It's also the first time I've started a series of hers without all the books being out which is a new level of excruciating. This is a super slow burn fantasy romance and I was here for every second of it. I loved the angst, I loved that they're true enemies, I loved it all. Of course, my love is only made stronger by the prequel novellas (which are essential reading in my opinion).

Number 3 goes to City of Souls and Sinners by Kayla Edwards. This is the second book in the House of Devils series, with the first book having been my number 1 book of 2022. The sequel was my most anticipated release of this year and I was not disappointed. This book is chunky and yet I flew through it so quickly. These characters are everything to me and this book was so full of angst and pain. It tugged on my heartstrings so much and I was basically a ball of anxiety. But I loved that. The cliffhanger was insane, though, so I'm eagerly anticipating the sequel coming in just a couple months.

I deliberated a lot on how to place these last two, but I think I've decided that this is the correct order. My number 2 slot goes to Fourth Wing and Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros. Like many, FW grabbed me and didn't let me go from the moment I read the first page. I loved it so much. When IF came around, I also loved it. It was a different vibe from the first book, but I loved it nonetheless. I think about these books a lot and I'm nervous and excited to see where they go from here.

My top spot of number 1 is a bit cheeky because it goes to the Mounts Bay books by J. Bree. This includes the Queen Crow trilogy, Butcher of the Bay duet, and my most favorite, the Hannaford Prep series. All of these series are inter-connected in this world following the same set of characters, which is why I wanted to rate them in one slot. I'm absolutely obsessed with these books and think about them on a weekly, if not daily basis. I've already read the Hannaford Prep series twice and everyday I debate rereading them all over again. This year truly belonged to J. Bree and I loved every second of it.

Thanks for reading!
xoxo

Favorite Books of 2021

Every year, one of my favorite posts to do is where I discuss my favorite books of the year. Usually, it's a very tough list for me to make when I have to narrow down all the dozens of books I read to my top 10 or so. However, this year I was actually struggling to fill this list.

Throughout most of the year, I was in a reading slump. While I read 43 books overall, a lot of those were rereads or just mediocre reads in general. Additionally, I don't count multiple books in a series as separate items on my favorites list which made it a bit sparse this year. I have 8 books and series to discuss today. Like I mentioned, I do keep series confined to just one list space and talk about them altogether, otherwise this list would be a bit longer.

I do think I was a bit pickier with my list this year. Instead of just taking the top 10 of the year and putting them in a list, I decided to pick books that have ended up on my all-time favorites list. Keep in mind, I'll be working up to my top favorite at the end of the post as well. Now...without further ado...here are my favorite books of 2021.

Coming in at number eight, we have Dear Love, I Hate You by Eliah Greenwood. This is a romance I discovered through TikTok and absolutely adored. It's quite long but I ended up reading it in one sitting. This was everything I wanted Punk 57 to be and more. The entire book just kept me engaged throughout reading it and I think that's why I loved it so much. After struggling with reading so much recently, the books that pull me in to make me forget I'm reading are the ones that I've loved the most and this one was no exception. If you'd like my full thoughts, check out my review here

At number seven, I have Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard. I was hoping to finish off at least the sequel as well this year but, sadly, my reading slump isn't fully gone yet and my binge-reading skills aren't quite up to par. However, I was blown away by this book. I was scared the simultaneous hype and criticism was going to make this book disappoint but I was surprised (and happy to be). This book was nothing like I expected and I was so intrigued by a modern fantasy society with both science and magic. I'm very eager to head into the rest of the series (despite already being spoiled for the final book). You can find more thoughts and a complete review here

For number six, I have the first three books in the Blood and Ash series by Jennifer L. Armentrout: From Blood and Ash, A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire, and The Crown of Gilded Bones. I've been a fan of Jennifer since I started my blog and got back into reading all the way back in 2015. I was around when From Blood and Ash was surprise dropped but I didn't get around to reading it until the third book released earlier this year. These books surprised me. They were definitely different than what I expected and very different from anything else Jennifer has previously written. However, I loved every moment of them despite the fact they're objectively not masterpieces. I do not have reviews for these, though, because I was also in the midst of a blogging slump when I read them (oops).

Coming in at spot number five is Ace of Shades and King of Fools, the first two books in the Shadow Game trilogy by Amanda Foody. I'd been wanting to read Ace of Shades since it first came out but never managed to find a suitable copy or time. This year, after reading another of Amanda's books I'll be discussing a bit later, I finally had the urge to dive in and I'm so glad I finally did. I absolutely loved these books and how unique they were from anything I'd ever read before. I don't want to end up on a long tangent, so I'll leave it by saying here are my reviews for Ace of Shades and King of Fools

At number four, I have These Violent Delights (TVD) and Our Violent Ends (OVE) by Chloe Gong. Now, I'll be honest, if it weren't for OVE then I'm not sure this duology would have made the list (based on TVD alone). I enjoyed the first book, but it was definitely difficult for me at times during my reading slump due to the slower building plot. However, OVE blew me away and I read it very quickly. This duology is supreme and I love OVE with my entire being. I cannot wait to reread it in the future but also to get into Chloe's future books. For more thoughts, here are my reviews for Our Violent Ends

Picking up at number three, I have The Accidental Apprentice by Amanda Foody. This is Amanda's middle-grade debut and the first book I read by her. I was hoping for a light middle-grade to help with my reading slump at the time (that didn't go away but at least this book was a shining light in the dark). I absolutely fell in love with this one. I read it in one sitting and became fully invested in the characters, world, magic system, and story. This book truly was what I needed at a very difficult time and I still often think about how much I love it (in fact, I'll be rereading it in a few weeks for the release of the sequel). At this age, middle grade books are hit or miss since I'm not the target audience but this one blew me away more than I ever expected. You can find my full review and gushing here

Coming in at number two, we have A Broken Blade by Melissa Blair. This was surprising to me because I hadn't even heard of this book at the beginning of December and had no idea it would pop into my life and shove every other book out of the way. This book simultaneously pulled me out of my reading slump before shoving me right back in. I was initially interested due to the hype surrounding its release on BookTok, but then I picked up a copy and annotated as I read and absolutely fell in love. This book was so good and everything I wanted in an accessible, easy to read way. I cannot wait for the sequel and I highly encourage everyone to pick up a copy. To prevent myself from gushing too much here, though, I'll drop the link to my full non-spoiler review

And, lastly, my number one book of 2021 should come as no surprise...A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas. This book...it was everything. While I can objectively say it's not a masterpiece, it was exactly what I wanted (well, almost). I can acknowledge there were aspects I didn't like and found lacking, but overall I just loved this book so much and never wanted it to end. I wanted angst, I wanted bitchy characters, I wanted tension and fighting and messiness. This book delivered. It ripped me (and the character) apart and put me back together. It was so different than what I was expecting but so amazing in all the ways that mattered to me. I think about it constantly and look forward to hopefully rereading it soon. As always, here's my full review if you want more of my thoughts.

So, those were my favorite books of 2021 and some books that have made it into my top favorites list. While I read a lot of good books this year that I ended up loving, there were also a lot of mediocre books. I'm hopeful for 2022 to be a better reading year with a lot more new favorites from my backlist TBR and (hopefully) completed series.

What was your favorite book of 2021?

Thanks for reading!

Favorite Books of 2020

One of my favorite posts to do every year is when I rank my favorite books of the year. We're finally at that time and I finally get to talk about all of the amazing new favorites I have from this year. I will say that 2020 overall was a weird reading year for me. I read 107 books but a lot of those were rereads or completed series. As I put series as a single slot in my favorites list, it means I had a lot less books to chose from than normal when I usually read from more series.

Despite all that, I have finally narrowed down my list to my top 10 books of 2020. This was actually quite difficult to do but I did it! Before we get into those, if you'd like to see more of my 2020 wrap-up posts, check out this page here. You can also check out my Goodreads 2020 Wrap-Up with all the books I read here!

Coming in at number 10, I have Pure by Jennifer L. Armentrout. This is book two in the Covenant series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I reread the first book, Half-Blood, because I decided I finally wanted to finish the series and found Pure to be even better than the first book! There were a lot of feels involved and I'm so excited to continue on with the series in the new year. You can find my review here

At number 9, I have the three Summer King novellas by Jennifer L. Armentrout: The Prince, The King, and The Queen. These are three spin-off novellas in A Wicked Trilogy (also by Jennifer) which is one of my favorite series by her. The novellas were so good and addicting. I read them all in the same few days and it was such a ride. I only wish that they had been full length novels so that I could have spent more time with the two main characters (who I absolutely fell in love with!). You can find my review for the novellas here

For number 8, I have All the Stars and Teeth by Adalyn Grace. This is the first book in a debut nautical fantasy duology ending in this upcoming February. I absolutely blew through this book when I read it at the beginning of the year and I'm so excited that the second book is coming soon because I have to know what happens next. The magic system was so intriguing and the characters were just so fun to read from. You can find my full review here

Coming in at number 7 is The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. I'm a big scaredy cat so adult thriller and horror books are typically a no-go for me. However, this is a more light-hearted young adult mystery and it was so much fun. There were definitely parts where I was feeling the mystery/thriller aspect, but most of the book was just fun or exciting moments. I am so incredibly excited for the second book to come out later this year. We just got a title and cover reveal in the past few weeks and my hype for the sequel just keeps growing! You can find my review for The Inheritance Games here

For number 6, I have Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall. This was one that I initially listened to on audiobook before buying the finished copy and, I have to say, that was definitely one of the best ways to read it. I ended up connecting so much with the characters and falling so in love with their story. This book was so much fun and had me laughing out loud a lot. It's definitely one of my favorite romcoms of all time now! You can find my review for Boyfriend Material here

Coming in at number 5 I have the Ash Princess trilogy by Laura Sebastian. I first read Ash Princess back before it even came out as an early reviewer and I enjoyed it quite a bit then. I didn't get around to reading the second book when it came out and, by the time the third book came out, I had pretty much forgotten everything about the first book. However, I was chosen for a blog tour for the series and was sent the entire trilogy to read. I binged it in spring right before and at the beginning of lockdown and had a blast! These books were so fun, so emotional, and so intriguing. I'm a big fan of the magic systems and absolutely love the characters involved in these books. I'm so glad that I decided to sign up for the tour as I can't imagine not having this new favorite series on my shelf. You can find my review of the first book here

For number four, I have Incendiary by Zoraida Córdova. I, again, was on a blog tour for this book last year and am so happy that I was. I read this book in just one sitting and became obsessed with it. It was so good, so intriguing, and made me feel so many things. I have five editions now of this book because it's just one of my all-time favorites now. I can't wait for the second book to release later this year so that I can finally see how it all ends! Zoraida truly has a gift for writing and I am very much looking forward to exploring her other backlist titles and upcoming releases. You can find my full review of Incendiary here

Coming in at number 3, I chose She's With Me by Jessica Cunsolo. This is a book that I started all the way back when it was first publishing chapter-by-chapter on Wattpad. Five or so years later and I finally had the finished, published copy in my hands. I read this book in one sitting back at the start of lockdown and fell in love. It was so wonderful being reunited with these characters in a revised, updated, and more polished story. I cannot wait to finish the second book (which I'm currently in the middle of!). You can find my full review here

The number two book that I read in 2020 was, of course, House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas. There's no doubt in my mind that this would have been my number one read for the year if I hadn't been spoiled for a major plot point before I even started. I was way less impacted by some of the twists and turns because I already knew what happened for that particular plotline. However, the rest of the book absolutely nailed it. The characters? Amazing. The story? Fantastic. The writing? Phenomenal. Sarah's first real shot at adult fantasy was so well-executed and I can't wait to reread it this year (and hopefully get the second book!). You can find my full review here.

The number 1 spot on this list goes to the Renegades trilogy by Marissa Meyer. I was obsessed with these books. I binge read this entire trilogy and had an absolute blast reading them. They were so good and, honestly, I can't believe I didn't read these books sooner. I'd heard the hype. I'd enjoyed all of Marissa's other books I'd read before. Yet I didn't think I'd enjoy these. I'm glad that I finally took the plunge because these have shot up into some of my favorite books of all time. I cannot wait to reread these in the and to have actual shelves to display them on in the future. You can find my review of Renegades here.

Thanks for reading! What were your favorite books of the year? Let me know in the comments down below!
