November 2021 Book Haul

Well...I know I said that November was going to be a smaller book haul than October. I was incredibly wrong. I hauled more books this month than last so obviously that book buying ban did not work. However, I will be on a strict buying ban in December due to Christmas shopping, general living expenses, etc.

That being said, I hauled thirty books in November. Many of them were heavily discounted (less than $3), some were paid for months ago as preorders, and some were just books I really wanted. I got a lot of books that are companions to tv shows and movies as well and those make up a good number of what I hauled secondhand.

This haul will be a bit different than normal. There's way too many books to talk about for my usual posting method so I will be separating them into sections and then listing them there. So, without further ado, here are the many many books I hauled in November.

The first section I have is books that are new releases or ones that I preordered a while back. I'm really excited about all of these and look forward to diving into the ones I haven't yet read.
  1. These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong (Waterstones special edition paperback)
  2. Our Violent Ends by Chloe Gong (Waterstones signed special edition hardback)
  3. All of Us Villains by Amanda Foody and Christine Lynn Herman (UK hardback)
  4. Girls of Fate and Fury by Natasha Ngan (UK hardback)
  5. Still With Me by Jessica Cunsolo (US paperback)

Up next, I have just general books that I've been wanting and ended up picking up this month. I've read a few of these already but the majority are unread and on my immediate TBR for the next few months! Some highlights include some special/hard to find editions and the complete Red Queen series.
  1. Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard (Collector's Edition)
  2. Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard (Collector's Edition)
  3. King's Cage by Victoria Aveyard (Target Exclusive Edition)
  4. War Storm by Victoria Aveyard (US hardcover)
  5. From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout (US hardcover)
  6. These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong (Owlcrate exclusive signed hardcover)
  7. The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood (US paperback)
  8. These Hollow Vows by Lexi Ryan (Fairyloot exclusive signed hardcover)
  9. S. by JJ Abrams and Doug Dorst

The next section I have is a few books that were heavily discounted. These are all romcoms where I was able to get all three for the cost of a single book at retail price. I've been getting into romcoms a lot more in the past couple of years as well and have been specifically looking for holiday-themed ones this autumn (aka for Halloween & Christmas time).
  1. The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary (UK paperback)
  2. To Love and to Loathe by Martha Waters (UK paperback)
  3. The Holiday Swap by Maggie Knox  (UK paperback)

The final portion of books I want to talk about is movie and tv show companion books. I found a secondhand seller online who has tons of companion books for my favorite movies and shows. Most of these were for very cheap (less than $3-$4). Believe it or not, but I actually had way more in my cart before I scaled down to these (though eventually I want all of them).
  1. Bones: The Official Companion by Paul Ruditis
  2. Bones: The Forensic Files by Paul Ruditis
  3. The Hunger Games: The Official Illustrated Movie Companion by Kate Egan
  4. Twilight: The Complete Illustrated Movie Companion by Mark Cotta Vaz
  5. New Moon: The Complete Illustrated Movie Companion by Mark Cotta Vaz
  6. Eclipse: The Complete Illustrated Movie Companion by Mark Cotta Vaz
  7. Breaking Dawn Part 1: The Official Illustrated Movie Companion by Mark Cotta Vaz
  8. The Adventures of Merlin: The Complete Guide by Jacqueline Rayner
  9. The Dragon's Call by Simon A. Forward
  10. The Adventures of Merlin: Villains Guide Jacqueline Rayner
  11. The Adventures of Merlin: Heroes Guide Jacqueline Rayner
  12. The Adventures of Merlin: The Official Annual 2010 by Various Authors
  13. The Adventures of Merlin: The Book of Mystery and Magic by Various Authors

Well, that's my haul for November. It was rather large, though I've had larger hauls (I've also had smaller hauls where I spent more money than this). However, I'm really excited about every book that I hauled this past month and I especially can't wait to dive into the companion novels.

Did you get any exciting books in November? Let me know down below!

Thanks for reading!

Why I Stopped Subscribing to Book Boxes

Hello all! Today is a bit of a different post for you all. Instead of a book review, Top 5 Wednesday, or recommendations post I thought I'd have a little discussion. I really want to incorporate more discussions on books and the community into my blog and I thought this would be a good place to start. So today I decided to talk about why I no longer buy book subscription boxes.

Disclaimer: I'm not saying book boxes aren't great, but these are just my personal reasons for not wanting them and they're not an attack on any boxes or people who subscribe to boxes. Everyone likes different items, books, and merch so what I find pushes me away from book boxes might be something that keeps a different person subscribing every month. This is just my personal situation :)

Honestly it all boils down to money and boxes not being worth it. First, of the 15+ books I've gotten in subscription boxes over the years, I've read all of two of them. One of them I hated and the other I read without remembering it was from a book subscription box. I prefer knowing what the book will be before I get the box because, as I look back on book boxes I've gotten, most of the books I've received are books I wouldn't have bought independently. While this can be a good thing in that it widens reading tastes, there are too many books I actually want to buy and I can't justify spending money on a box with an ok-sounding book. The flipside is that some boxes I've gotten before have been specifically because I knew that a certain book was in them--take Fairyloot's October 2018 box. The book was Girls of Paper and Fire, which was one that I really wanted to read.

Next, I find that I'm usually overloaded with merch that I either don't care about or can't use. One thing I've noticed recently is that of all the unboxings I see on social media every month, there's at least one box that includes a pillowcase. For me personally, I don't like having a lot of bookish pillowcases because (1) I don't have enough pillows and (2) they generally don't all match my bedding or each other. As someone who doesn't have a couch or a place to put pillows other than my bed, pillowcases are wasted on me, especially if they're for a fandom I'm not a part of.

What merch really boils down to is that I'm generally not a fan of every single fandom that's included in a box. Usually there's a mix of fandoms, but I can't justify spending $40-$60 on a box because there's two fandoms I like out of six that are included. What ends up happening is that I'm left with merch I don't care about. Take, for example, the Grishaverse. I have a multitude of merch items for this world from just two boxes. And I haven't even read most of the books.

Additionally, my favorite merch items I've ever gotten in boxes are items I can use. There are a lot of art prints and other items I can't use included in boxes. While art prints are pretty, there's only so many that I can display. A big item that's included more and more is edibles such as coffee, tea, hot chocolate, cookies, etc. I don't drink anything daily other than water and I don't drink tea or coffee ever. So when a big item in a box is one of these types of items, it just sits in my drawer for a long time.

Overall, with merch I would prefer to buy merch specific to books I love rather than get a whole box with a bunch of fandoms I'm not a part of. The individual merch items might be more expensive than  box items once you calculate how much you paid for each item in a box, but I'd still be saving money in the long run rather than throwing it out on stuff I'm going to get rid of.

What it really boils down to is that I don't find boxes to be worth the money I paid for them. Now, there are a few that I really felt were worth it--such as the Fairyloot box I got that had two books, a booksleeve, a reading journal, and more or special edition boxes that are completely centered around one fandom--but when looking over all of the book boxes I've ever gotten, I don't see the worth for me personally when I don't have a large disposable income. Maybe one day when I have a full-time job and don't have to pay for college I might venture back into book boxes, but for the time being it's not a viable option for me.

Thanks for reading!
xoxo

October 2018 Book Haul!

Hello everyone! I'm back with another monthly book haul, and this one was pretty big, but not as big as the previous months. There were a lot of exciting releases that came out this month, which is why I got so many, but in upcoming months, my hauls will definitely be trickling down to only a few. Anyway, I got 13 physical books and 4 ebooks this month. Let's go ahead and jump straight in!

The first book I got this month was The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell. I've heard nothing but amazing things about this book since it was released and especially with the release of the second book this month. I found it for really cheap on Amazon Marketplace and I can't wait to read it!

The second book I got this month was Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor. This is the beautiful 1st edition UK hardcover that came with orange sprayed edges and I'm in love. It's so pretty and the books next to each other are so aesthetic. I'm super excited to start reading the first book soon!

After that, I got a copy of What If It's Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera. When I got an Amazon gift card all the way back during the summer, I knew I wanted to preorder this book. I love Becky's books and I've been wanting to read one by Adam for a while, so I'm very excited to read this one hopefully soon!

Next, I picked up the Collector's Edition of The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. I know this book is going to wreck me, but I feel like with the current issues in America, this book is definitely one that I should read. Especially with the movie coming out, I knew I wanted to read the book before watching that.

After that, I made a trade for an arc of Once and Future by Amy Rose Capetta and Cori McCarthy which comes out in March. I saw this on someone's Instagram story and I knew I had to have it when I heard the synopsis. It's a gender bent, modern-day King Arthur retelling set in space. It sounds so badass and I can't wait.

The next two books I got were in this month's Owlcrate. You can find my complete unboxing here, but the first book that was included was Pride by Ibi Zoboi. This is a modern-day Pride & Prejudice retelling set in Brooklyn. We got an exclusive cover, exclusive endpages, and the book came signed this month! The second book that Owlcrate included was a signed, exclusive edition of Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagwa. I haven't heard much about this book other than it's based on Japanese folklore and a lot of people have been raving about it. I'll definitely be giving it a try!

The next 5 books I got are all different editions of Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas. Each edition has something different about it and I'm obsessed with them all. The first edition I got was the Books-A-Million edition which came with fan art on the endpages. I love love love the fan art and I'm so happy to have this edition. Gabriela, the artist, really outdid herself on this art. The second edition I got was the Target edition which came with a collectible Aelin trading card. The third edition I got was the basic regular edition from Amazon which I'll be annotating and tabbing up, and potentially trying my hand at paining in the future. The fourth edition I got was the UK Waterstones paperback edition, which also came with fan art in it. It's the same fan art as the Books-A-Million edition but in the paperback, and I love it. The UK editions are gorgeous and I think I actually prefer the UK cover to the US. The last edition I got this month was the signed, tour edition from the Chicago tour stop. You can find my tour recap post here

The last book I got this month was from the Fairyloot October box, which you can find my unboxing for here. The book included this month was Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan. I've been excited about the release of this book for so long and I'm thrilled to have this edition. It's a signed copy with an exclusive cover and pink sprayed edges! I cannot wait to read it!

The first ebook that I picked up this month was Neutral by Jaymin Eve & Jane Washington, which is a novella set between the 4th and 5th books in the Curse of the Gods series, which is one of my favorites. This follows two side characters that I've been loving since the beginning and I can't wait to read this in my binge of the series in November.

The second ebook I got was another novella called Meeting Sang: Silas by C.L. Stone. The author is releasing the first book in this series (which is another of my favorites) split up into the different boys' POVs. I cannot wait for the next one!

The third ebooks I got this month was Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas. I own almost all of her books in ebook format and this one was finally on sale enough for me to buy it! For me, it's just a comfort knowing that I'll always be able to have my favorite book series with me no matter where I travel, especially next year when I'm going to study abroad and am unable to bring books with me.

The last ebooks I got this month was Secrets from the Grave by B.L. Brunnemer, the 6th book in the Veil Diaries series that released on Halloween. This is one of my favorite RH series and I'm super excited to see where the story takes us next!

Well, that's it for my October book haul! Thanks for reading and can't wait to see you in November!
xoxo

Unboxing: Owlcrate's "Lost In a Bookstore"

Hello everyone! I sure hope your month has been good so far. Mine has been going great! I've read so many books, written so many blog posts, and am doing well in my courses. Today I'm here with a super exciting blog post: my October Owlcrate Unboxing! I haven't gotten an Owlcrate in over a year but when I heard their theme for this month, I knew I had to get it! I snagged one just as they sold out..woohoo! Anyway, it was definitely hard to avoid spoilers since a lot of people I follow had gotten theirs already and I have little self-control once I'm made aware of the fact that I can go ahead and sneak a peek. However, I made it through and am so excited to be unboxing this for you all today!

So we start off opening the box to this view. On top we have the spoiler card. This is a beautiful print that follows the monthly theme and on the back has a listing of all the items and vendors that are included in the box! Very informative for bookstagrammers like me who like tagging the vendors in my pictures! Later on, we had this beautiful monthly pin that matches the spoiler card. At the very bottom of the box, we also have the little magazine which includes interviews with authors and vendors, information on photo challenges, puzzles, and more!

The next item is this gorgeous pair of socks from Out of Print and Underlined. I got an Owlcrate box a couple years ago and they included a pair of socks from Out of Print so I'm super excited to have another pair! These have open books all over them and they spell out BOOK NERD on the soles of the feet. I can't wait to wear these when I'm in my cozy chair reading the rest of this fall.

The next two items were a bag of tea and a heart and arrow shaped tea strainer. I cracked the tea open just to smell it and oh lordy does it smell amazing. I'm not a huge tea drinker but I've been getting more and more into it lately, so I'm pretty excited to get to try this blend. The strainer is also pretty cute, although I'm wondering how I'm going to effectively clean it whilst living in a college dorm. The tea was from The Tea Spot whilst the strainer was created by Team Owlcrate.

Following, we have a gorgeous Mirror of Erised, Harry Potter themed print. There's something so simplistic and beautiful about this print and I can't wait to put it on my HP shelf next to all my other merch. This print was designed by Michelle Gray, who also had input on the tea strainer!

This month's box included two books, which was a huge reason that I resubscribed this month. The first book was Pride by Ibi Zoboi, a Pride and Prejudice retelling set in Brooklyn. Not only was this cover an Owlcrate Exclusive, but the book itself was signed by Ibi and came with a letter from the author and matching bookmark.

The second book this month was Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagwa, a newly released fantasy inspired by Japanese folklore and culture. This book also had an Owlcrate Exclusive cover, was signed by the other, came with a letter from Julie, and came with a matching bookmark.

The last item was actually underneath the books but is probably my favorite item in the entire box: a canvas clutch purse designed by Bookworm Boutique. I love all of Bookworm Boutique's designs and this time is no exception. The quote is awesome and the purse is sized to be able to fit most books. I can't wait to use this!

On the very bottom was the theme reveal for next month's Owlcrate: Rise From the Ashes as well as a sneak peek at one of the items: a wax seal set. I, unfortunately, am not getting next month's box because I already know what the book will be and I don't need two copies as well as the fact that I don't have a way of fitting this box into my budget for the next few months. However, I'm super excited to see what they come up with next and I hope that you'll all consider subscribing! If you do, use this link and the code BKWORM10 for a discount on your first box!

Thanks for reading!

Book Sleeve Comparisons and Reviews!

Hey guys! So, the new obsession on bookstagram lately has been candles and book sleeves! I, too, have got on board with these new obsessions. Today, however, we're here to talk about book sleeves. There are many different stores out there with many different designs, styles, and materials. I have 4 booksleeves from different stores/subscription boxes that I'm here to talk to you guys about.

First things first, I want to talk a bit about what I'm rating these sleeves on. There are four categories that I'm going to be rating each sleeve on out of 5 stars, and then I will average out the scores for an overall rating out of 5 stars. The categories that I'm rating these sleeves on are durability and ability to protect my books, size to price ratio, quality of craftsmanship, and the overall feel of the sleeve. I am not rating these on size to book ratio or design because you can get a sleeve in pretty much any size or design so it wouldn't be fair. For the ability to protect my books testing, I carried a book the size the sleeve was made for in the sleeve for two days in my school backpack, carrying the books and sleeves with me to classes, lunch, choir practices, and even water polo practice.

Next, I want to talk about which book sleeves I will be reviewing. The first is from Book Beau and is the one that I got in my September 2017 Owlcrate box. The second is from Melvis Makes and is the first book sleeve that I ever bought for myself. The third is from Book Bud by Gabriel Lea. The fourth is the Fairyloot exclusive book sleeve that was included in their November 2017 box. I included the same book next to each sleeve for size comparisons to be easier.

Let's go ahead and get into reviewing the first sleeve!

~~~
As I said before, I am reviewing Book Beau first. This is the design that came in the Owlcrate box and I've slowly grown to like it more and more. It can fit a normal sized paperback or thin standard hardcover book.
Category 1: Durability and Ability to Protect my Books
I've been using this sleeve for quite a bit while at college. I've been reading a lot of arcs and smaller paperback books and it's nice to have this to put my smaller books in and not having them be dwarfed by the bigger sleeves. As I said before, I got this in September. I've used it primarily for taking books around campus but also for transporting books from home to college and vice versa. It still looks brand new from when I first got it, so the durability is quite good.
This sleeve also does a nice job at protecting my books. My paperbacks have held up very well in this sleeve. The only thing is that after extended use (as in, a week or more) of being in the sleeve and me not reading a book, the corners of my paperback got a little crumpled. However, I only noticed since I went looking for the smallest of imperfections and it is not noticeable otherwise.
For this category, Book Beau gets a 4.75/5 rating.
Category 2: Size to Price Ratio
It is hard to gauge the price of something when it came in a subscription box, but I decided to go on the Book Beau website and find the price for a beau in a similar size on their. What I came up with was the "Indie" size (7.5x10 inches, approx) at $20.
Do I think that the Book Beau I got was worth $20? Not really. I would not have purchased this sleeve on my own for that amount of money and am grateful that it came in a subscription box where I got other items to balance out the price. I just personally don't think that this sleeve at this size and quality is worth $20 plus shipping.
For this category, Book Beau gets a 2/5 rating.
Category 3: Quality of Craftsmanship
When I heard that we were going to be getting a book sleeve in the September Owlcrate box, I was super excited. When I got it, I was a little disappointed. There are a few issues I have with the craftsmanship of these sleeves.
First, and this isn't necessarily Book Beau's fault, is that the sleeve was slightly too big for the box so it had to be squished in. This meant that the sleeve had creases and wrinkles in it when it showed up. Even now, over 6 months of use later, there are still creases in it. I have heard that ironing it gets rid of these, but I don't own an iron. This is mostly due to the size of the subscription box, but it is important to note that it's possibly these sleeves will get wrinkled in shipping or by daily use. Again, not a huge deal, but something that irked me.
Secondly, the overall make of this sleeve is a bit sub-par. There's no inner lining, for starters. It's just a piece of fabric sewn to the outside of a couple pieces of foam. It very much feels like it, too. There are also many lose threads that weren't trimmed when I got it. Another issue I have is open seams on the inside. They're on the inside, so I'm not worried about the look. Rather, I'm worried about potentially putting a book that barely fits inside and having the seams bend the pages or mess them up. Overall, this sleeve looks and feels like something I could have made in high school FACS class.
Book Beau has recently switched to a manufacturer instead of doing it by hand, so there may be a difference in craftsmanship with later sleeves. Also, this sleeve was mass-produced by hand so that may be a reason why there was an oversight on some of these things.
For this category, Book Beau receives a 2/5 rating.
Category 4: Overall Feel
Overall, this book sleeve does its job. It protects my books when they're in my backpack or traveling hundreds of miles between school and college and book signings. The fabric design is pretty good so I feel like that bumps it up a little bit in my subconscious even if I don't intend on rating it because of that. However, I would not buy this sleeve on my own, especially after having owned one. I wouldn't buy this sleeve for a friend or family member either as I can get a bigger sleeve that is better designed at only $2 more (more on that down below).
For overall feel, Book Beau gets a 2.5/5 star rating.
Final Thoughts
Unfortunately, I just do not think that Book Beau is worth it. The price is too high for a sleeve of that size when you can get a better-made, bigger sleeve for the same price from other sellers (see the pricing on Melvis Makes and Book Bud down below). I'm sure that when beaus first came out and were the only one of their kind, they were a great option. But with the explosion of book sleeve sales and shops as well as competitive pricing, Book Beau cannot compare to other sleeves that I have.
Book Beau got an overall 2.8/5 rating, which isn't terrible, but there are better sleeves out there. I'm not going to get rid of it or stop using it as it does do it's job as a book sleeve, but I will not be buying another and recommend that you buy from a different source.
The next sleeve I will be reviewing is from Melvis Makes on Etsy. The pattern is a galaxy pattern with glow in the dark stars. I bought this over a year ago (I can't remember the exact date) and it's the first book sleeve I ever had. This sleeve can fit two small paperbacks, larger (taller paperbacks), standard hardcovers, and even hardcovers up to the size of Tower of Dawn.
Category 1: Durability and Ability to Protect my Books
I've had this sleeve for a while now and it still looks almost brand new. Even before coming to college, this sleeve made countless trips to school, my dad's house, on vacations, and even on my sister's trip to Washington, D.C. It's been through a lot and at no point has it looked or felt less than its best. It also protects my books very well. There were zero crumpled corners, dents, or anything of the sort. It held its own. I have nothing else to say other than the durability is fantastic and it does a great job of protecting my books.
For this category, Melvis Makes receives a 5/5 star rating.
Category 2: Size to Price Ratio
This sleeve cost $23 to make and ship from the U.K. to the Chicago area. The size on this measures 11x8.5 inches. As you can see, compared to Book Beau, you are getting a lot more sleeve for your money. Do I think that this sleeve is worth it at its price point? Yes, I do. Between the amount of sleeve you get and the cheap shipping, I think that this is the best deal I have gotten so far.
For this category, Melvis Makes receives a 5/5 star rating.
Category 3: Quality of Craftsmanship
This sleeve is very well made. There are no lose threads or open seams anywhere. The corners don't tuck in and the entire design is very smooth and well-executed. There are only two small complaints that I have with this sleeve's design.
First, there is no padding in between the outer fabric and the inner liner (it is important to note that it does have an inner fabric liner whereas Book Beau does not). I believe that it's just thick fabric. However, as this sleeve protected my book 100% and there wasn't any damage, I don't think this is as big of a deal.
Secondly, the inner liner is not connected to the bottom of the sleeve. This means you can pull it out and put it back in. This isn't necessarily a bad thing because you can clean it easier, but sometimes putting it back in does get bunched up. Not a huge problem, but one to note for prospective sleeve buyers.
For this category, Melvis Makes receives a 4/5 star rating.
Category 4: Overall Feel
The overall feel of this sleeve is very nice. It fits well in your hand and it's a nice texture. There are very little errors in the craftsman ship of it. I also picked out this design so I feel like that is another reason why I like it so much. As I stated before, this specific design glows in the dark and I love it so much. This sleeve has also been through a lot and stayed resilient.
My overall feeling for this sleeve is that it deserves a 4.5/5 star rating.
Final Thoughts
I think that this sleeve is definitely a top contender for best sleeves out there. It's made well and it protects your books very nicely. It's offered in a wide range of sizes and designs, which is a huge bonus. Also, this was one of the larger sizes they offered, so a smaller size would be even cheaper than this already was. I find that Melvis Makes is definitely a bang for your buck. I would definitely buy from them again in the future and I will be considering this store when buying book sleeves for my friends.
Overall, Melvis Makes received a total score of 4.6 stars.
The next sleeve I'll be reviewing is Book Bud by Gabriel Lea. This is one of my favorite ones that I have and I can say even before I go into this that I highly recommend them. This sleeve is sized at --- and is one of the exclusive designs that they have on their site.
Category 1: Durability and Ability to Protect my Books
I've had this sleeve for a little under a year now and it's done a very good job at protecting my books. It's made a lot of trips with me to work at the pool and from my dad's and back, as well as to college and back home multiple times. The sleeve looks just like it did when I got it in the mail and I couldn't be happier with how it's been holding up.
It also protects my books extremely well. The only thing is that one of my books' corners was a little crumpled. However, you can't even notice unless you are actually looking for what is going on. Plus, I'm not sure if that is due to the sleeve or if it was like that before I put the book in.
For this category, Book Bud received a 4.75/5 stars.
Category 2: Size to Price Ratio
I paid $23 for this sleeve plus shipping from Australia to near the Chicago area. I bought my sister one for her birthday so I was able to combine the shipping, so that was nice because the shipping was around $7, which is still reasonable for shipping from Australia to here. The sleeve was 10.5 x 8.5 inches, which is big enough for most of my books.
Now, in terms of is this sleeve worth it for this price, I think it is. The sleeve has a nice cotton (?) padding in between the outer fabric and the inner lining. The inner lining is also a nice soft fabric that I really like touching. The fabric in this specific sleeve was also printed exclusively for this shop, so I do think that it was worth it for the price. However, the non-exclusive fabric sleeves are only $19, which is a nice price for the quality materials that you are getting in these sleeves.
For this category, Book Bud received a 5/5 stars.
Category 3: Quality of Craftsmanship
This is a very well put together book sleeve. The look of the sleeves is really sleek and smooth. The outside fabric feels very nice to the touch. It's not soft but it's very smooth and doesn't wrinkle. The designs are printed directly on the fabric and they're very vibrant. There is some padding between the outer fabric and the inner liner, which is made of a super soft material. There are no lose threads, no creases where there shouldn't be, and the liner is sewn to the bottom. It's tall enough that when I do put my hardcovers in, not only does it fit in the sleeve without creasing, but the sleeve covers the top of the book.
Overall, this category received a 5/5 stars.
Category 4: Overall Feel
Overall, I love this sleeve. From the sleek design of the sleeve to the quality materials that went into this sleeve, I genuinely feel like this is a bargain for the price that it's set at. It does a fabulous job at protecting my books and has lasted for quite a while. Plus, I love that this creator designs her own fabrics and then makes sleeves out of them. It adds a nice touch that this sleeve is designed around one of my favorite series.
I feel like this sleeve deserves a 5/5 stars.
Final Thoughts
This was probably one of the best purchases I've ever made. The shop owner personally reached out to me to let me know of any hiccups in production, like fabric being late on delivery, and kept me updated each step of the way. That's something that I didn't get with the other times I've bought a sleeve. And despite it shipping all the way from Australia, I got it in a timely manner a week before I expected. I already have gifted one of these sleeves to my sister for her birthday and she loves it and uses it all the time. The price is great for the quality that you get and I couldn't be happier.
Overall, Book Bud received an average of 4.9 stars out of 5.
The last sleeve that I'm going to be reviewing is one that was an exclusive item in a Fairyloot box. You can't get it from anywhere unless you buy it from somebody who got it in the box, but as Fairyloot plans on putting sleeves in more boxes, you could use this review as a resource to see if you would want the sleeve that comes in their box.
Category 1: Durability and Ability to Protect My Books
I haven't had this sleeve for as long as the others, maybe about 4 months? I bought it from someone who got it in their Fairyloot box but didn't see themselves using it. I can't really rate on durability, for this reason, but it does still look brand new even after these few months of me using it.
As with the others, this sleeve spent two days traveling with me around college in my backpack and it held up well. The book had zero damage at all apart from what was already done before going in the sleeve, which was still minimal. It did great there. Plus, this sleeve is the only one that I have that is waterproof, which I'm stoked about. It means that this sleeve will probably be the one that I use when I take books to work (I work at a pool).
For this category, this sleeve received a 5/5 stars.
Category 2: Prize to Size Ratio
This is also tough to judge simply because the sleeve came in a subscription box and was made my the Fairyloot team, so I can't get an accurate price for just the sleeve. However, the other sleeves I reviewed around this size were ~$20. A Fairyloot box costs $36 plus shipping. That means that if the sleeve were full prize at the same as the others, the rest of the box would cost only $16. That's impractical as a book is that much and Fairyloot includes a lot of other items. So, I'm going to go ahead and say that the sleeve itself would cost less than $20.
I think this is a great price for the size and quality that you're getting. The price I paid from the person I bought it from was $20, which included shipping. I was not disappointed in what I got.
This category received a 5/5 stars.
Category 3: Quality of Craftsmanship
The craftsmanship on this sleeve is stellar. For one, there is a lot of padding for if you drop your book and it's waterproof, which is a bonus. There were no lose strings or open seams and the actual sewing of the sleeve together was done very well.
The only qualm I have is that the width of the sleeve is not proportional to the height. That means that even if a tall, thick book were to fit vertically, it may not fit width wise. But it's still a big sleeve that had held my larger paperbacks and hardcovers.
For this category, this sleeve received a 4.75/5 stars.
Category 4: Overall Feel
Overall this sleeve is very sleek and well made. It does a great job at protecting books and I have a feeling that it's going to be very durable for a lot of years.
I think that this sleeve deserves a 5/5 stars.
Final Thoughts
This sleeve is amazing and I'm so glad I was able to find someone who was selling theirs. The price I paid was definitely worth it and I think that between the design and the fact that it's waterproof, it's just overall a stellar sleeve. I would definitely buy a Fairyloot box just for the book and a sleeve like this one.
This sleeve received a total average of 4.9 stars out of 5 across all of the categories.
Final Judgements
This was definitely an interesting experiment for me to run. It made me look a lot deeper into if I was getting my money's worth, if the sleeves were truly the best quality, and so much more. I'm really glad that I did this, though.
The Fairyloot sleeve and Book Bud by Gabriel Lea tied for first place with 4.9 stars, with Melvis Makes after with 4.6, and Book Beau last with 2.8. It is clear to see that just because a sleeve is super popular, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is the best option out there. It is worth it to go searching for smaller shops with more quality sleeves at better prices.
My personal favorite is either the Fairyloot one or the book bud. I can't decide which one I prefer, because each of them are beautiful. All of these are extremely useful and I'm glad to have them all, but there are pros and cons to each. I will be expanding my collection soon, though.
I hope that this helped you with your decisions on where/if you want to buy a book sleeve! I would definitely buy one again from any of these places except for Book Beau. And if you already have a book sleeve, I hope that you found this informative and a way to compare yours to other brands!
